You see, I think this is the viewpoint from a lot of fans. They know Montys limitations, and as such think he has a place in the team.
I'm more than happy for us to get a better player in than Monty, and if/when that happens then I'll be glad to see him dropped. But for what he brings to the team at the moment, I think he is good value for money and deserves to be there.
I'll tell you what managers like about Monty. He's the kind of player that they will give instructions to and he'll carry them out to the absolute letter. That's why he's so highly valued by his managers and peers. Its more about that than anything else because he is immensely disciplined and focused on a task.
Managers love players like that and they can look beyond any of their abilities because of it. I had a similar relationship with my managers when I was still playing (though I like to think I had a bit more technical ability than Monty) and I was hardly ever dropped because of it. I would just go out and do everything that was asked of me, like a machine. My last manager said I had the mentality of a pro and could have made it if I had started younger. I didnt really agree with him but it shows how appreciated I was.
My point is he has those similar character traits I had and I know first hand how valuable it is considered to be. Monty will always get regular football because of the type of person he is. Simple as.
