I hear this term much less now "on the transfer list". Was this some kind of digital database that clubs could access or just a phrase managers used to put the player for sale via the media?

What happened to the good old days when we used to find out we had a signed a player before the media got wind of it. The media totally take away the surprise element now

I think it was another tool for managers to say to a player, ‘you are not wanted here’. Another punishment for players who thought they were above it all and generally too good for the club.
Like ‘training with the reserves’ which should have been Wilders first response when Lundstram started getting all Billy big bollix!
