I'd be quite happy for the fans never to make up a song for a player ever again. I think it's a little bit silly really. I don't think they are deserving of the adulation. They get paid enough money so let that be enough. Let's have songs about Sheffield United FC, but not about individual players, because they aren't important - it's the club that's important.
For most of last season our fans were singing...
Follow, follow, follow, Sheff United's the team to follow,
With Sammon and Sharpy
and Che and McNulty
Diego De Girolamo
Yet of these players, only 2 were actually in or near the team at the time. Sammon was one of the worst signings we've ever made in our history. McNulty was plying his trade 200 miles away in Portsmouth and De Girolamo had tripped over his big head and was nowhere near the team.
But - all of this seemed to have escaped the thousands of beered-up fans who chanted it home and away.
That's why I think it's silly.
And as for EEL? I think some fans have gone completely OTT about him in any case. He's ok - nothing special. Better than what we had before, for sure. But NOT deserving of hero worship or even his own little song. Sorry to be such a killjoy - but someone needs to say it even if it spoils the children's party.
