Another player that fell fowl of the blackwell period, good player that was in and out of the team too often.
Great crosser of the ball.
We could do with a great crosser now.

Decent penalty taker, produced two or three dangerous crosses into the box each game but he got slagged off because he didn't run around for the full 90 minutes. Some Blades fans want a player to have the engine of Bob Booker and the skill of Glyn Hodges. They don't seem to twig that if such a player existed he wouldn't be playing for us.

When Blackwell first came to United Cotterill was fantastic for that half season or so, especially so with Sharp and Beattie up top.

That was when we actually played half decent under Blackwell, played with a bit of abandon and got forward quickly with purpose. When we reverted to the negative hoofball that's when a few players suffered, Cotts included.

I reckon he'd be great in this team as long as he didn't have the defensive burden we seem (as fans and as a manager) to lump on wingers. Why anyone would want a winger spending more time in his own half than the oppositions is a theory I've never been able to get my head around.

Cotterill has scored 10 goals from midfield, our top scoring midfielders have scored 3.
Cotterill has created 18 goals (assists), the most any of our players have managed is 6.

On that basis it's difficult to see how anyone can think we wouldn't be better off with him in the team.
Stats that are nearly as good as quinny last season yet he got slagged off every week but when Quinn had an off day he still wanted the ball, I didn't expect cotterill to defend, but you could watch a game for 70 mins, see the board go up with his number on it and it was the first time you'd realised he was still on the pitch.

Typical 80s type winger, great on his day, anonymous on others. Although he did his fair bit of battling in the odd game, as with Flynn, it takes him away from the job he's there for and unfortunately, the work ethic seems more important these days hence why England will always pick the likes of Cleverly and Milner over Lennon and Young for example.

Quinn got 4 goals and 13 assists last season.
Cotterill's stats this season aren't "nearly as good", they are already much better.
Quinn was excellent last season, you won't have seen me slagging him off.
I like players who create and score goals, I'm funny like that...

I think that is me corrected

Couldn't disagree more Swiss, if you take our current squad now. Could you tell me one winger, or possibly one striker who has a better ratio then playing at near/at their full potential 1/3 of the time?

But this is the point, When Cotteril was playing shite for us we were one of the top sides in the Championship. The fact that we are now struggling to get out of the division below speaks volumes...

The fact that Cotteril is now plying his trade at this level and having some success also suggests that he has found his level here.

At the level we had him at he was crap. At this level he's as close to being a world beater that he could be.

It was largely his form that saw us shoot up the Championship table in the first place!

'Largely' his form, not entirely! I didn't begin to suggest it was solely down to Cotterill.

It looks like the folk who hold opinions about this lad either good or bad won't be swayed, agreeing to disagree might be the way to go

He had massive faults, I wasn't particularly sad when he went and he seems to have found his level now. But when I see suggestions that he brought nothing to the team and never contributed a thing I think people saw what they wanted to see, or are remembering it wrongly.

Ah Swiss that is not the point though, Cotts did not play shite for us for the whole season in the Championship, he had some excellent games and was hampered by a manager who played a completely different football style to that of which he is effective in!

Cotts is now plying his trade at this level and not just having some success but major success being a key if not the pinnacle player for Donny.... This showing that he is too good for this level.

It's a difference of opinion here obviously mate. I agree in some games he looked as if he was hiding but my point earlier stands that if a winger is playing at 100% or close week in week out he will get snapped up by a prem team or playing for a prem team. For what Cotts offered he was a great exciting attacking asset with pace to burn and a great delivery, something of which we have missed for years now!

Expecting him to graft in grity games flying in with hard challenges is simply not how the bloke is built and you have to use your players and play them to the correct strategy otherwise it comes down to the manager... ehem Blackwell. It comes down to the fact that he was and still is a very good professional for the likes of a championship team and easily good enough for this league as he is showing but must be played in the correct form of play.... otherwise he is useless. Another great example is that of Billy sharp.... we all know how fecking annoying that worked out with how badly we wasted his talent, lumping 7ft balls up to him shouting go on Billy do your stuff when the lads 5 ft nothing.

3 players have left in recent years which really gutted me. These 3 as we could have kept them and didn't have to get rid. Cotterill, Ward and Stead.

"At this level" I would rather have Cotts than Flynn. Yep he was (still is probably) nesh and a bit of a wimp - but Flynn's not great in this department either.
Cotterill's stats speak for themselves - again "at this level" - I knows, but he's a good crosser of the ball. Much better than what we can currently field week after week.
I watch Football League show most weeks and you can see what influence he has on Donny finding the net.
Others have already said it but Kitson would love to play alongside him I reckon.

yeah.. leigertwood.. britton..dyer. they're all in the premier league now.. guffaws

Leggy was sold well before Blackwell came in, Dyer barely got given a game till it was too late, and Britton he clearly hadn't scouted properly before signing him as he certainly hadn't been signed to play the role he performed at Swansea.

To be fair I think Britton was signed by a manager who was sacked only two league games later. It may have been the case that Blackwell had a plan for him that got thrown out the window.

Thats not quite what I mean't S.P. The player whom I mentioned as blossoming was Britton , it was mean't as a bit of a joke as the ball went back to front in the shortest possible time , which is why Britton was no good in the team then . We'll be able to see how good Lagerwood , and Blackman is next year when we play Reading in the championship. U.T.B.

I liked Cotterill. No Colin Morris, but a decent winger. Thought he had quality, and put in a decent cross. My mate, whose opinion I do respect, thought he was bob. Different opinions, but for me, he's the sort who'd thrive in the right team. With someone else (s) doing the dirty work.. Hope he's cr@p for the rest of this season

According to the football league paper Cotts is on 9 bookings, 1 away from a 2 game ban.

Also on 9 and of interest to us - Douglas of Brentford and Brandy and Butler of Walsall.
