I really can't fathom what people saw in this lad, I know he's produced a little bit at donny but at united he was shite ! Someone on radio sheffield tonight was saying how much better off we'd be with him in the side by I just can't see it, please explain what I'm missing because I remember offering him his cab fare on numerous occasions !

Excellent crosser of the ball, and into the box that is. Wouldn't fit in our current formation, as he likes to go forward. A bit of a weakling, hence never being a top player. But a weakling with the right intention, rather than a weakling with no eye for goal, the kind that's sadly found much closer to home.

Thought he was quick, could cross a ball and take people on. However,he had no bottle and a couple of hard tackles and he disappeared

One of those that are remembered as being better for us than they actually were. Never saw him play well for us

The caller has always loved him and uses every opportunity to promote his 'brilliance'

Unfortunately he sees him as a cross between George Best, Messi and Pele when the reality is that the opposition only had to giver him a hard stare and he was out of the game.

Possibly the neshest player ever to wear the red & white stripes.

To be fair he had flashes of brilliance, unfortunately he's another midfielder that Blackwell ruined a la Harper, Howard, Britton

Well, George Best is his middle name.

I remember him as very much a confidence player, who was awful when the crowd got on his back (a great counter point to anyone who thinks our crowd at home 'makes no difference' to how players perform) and very good when on his game. Unfortunately he was pulled out of the team randomly by Blackwell when he got some of that back and only returned regularly in a desperate move at the end of the season. I felt Blackwell mismanaged both he and Dyer that year. But he's certainly not the world-beater some claim he is - v good at this level though.

I agree he was totally mis- managed by B/well- who wasn't!!!

Even so he was of the sort that would always struggle with a Blades crowd, mainly because he didn't have any bottle and, as soon as he got stick, he reacted negatively and went into his shell whereas we Blades value fight, commitment and the ability to battle more than technique- probably because that's what we are accustomed to.

I'm more of a fan of the Paul Devlin type winger rather than a David Cotterill. Less ability, more tough little bastard who gets the ball, gets past the opposition and gets the cross in. Pick ball up and point A, run to point B, whack cross in or win corner, return to point A.

Cotterill had a bit of ability, but was too wet.

Lightning pace? Great delivery? Attacks the full backs? Good set piece taker? Exciting to watch? Must be shit..... Good Lord I was so pissed off when we sold him. It’s a stupid comment to say a winger was too temperamental... Christ they all are, the only time you see a winger play well week in week out is when they're playing for a prem side. Cotts was a very good championship player and exciting to watch, ruined by a hoofball manager. For league one he is an absolute steal and you'll notice when he is not in the Donny side... they lose.

Its amazing sometimes those people who expect a player at this or indeed championship level to play at their full potential week in week out. If they do that they are bought by a prem club as soon as the next transfer window arrives. A winger lightweight..... never, hence why they are so quick, you do not get many pacey strong wingers.

I really do despair at some Blades fans sometimes who cry out for pace, attacking football, good wingers who can deliver a decent cross. Yet moan when a winger capable of doing all of that does not do it week in week out... Cotterill had the quality to unpick teams and I can recall occasions where he was simply unplayable. He is having a field day in this league and if you watch highlights of Donny like I have on football league review, you will see that most of their goals are either started, created (i.e. assisted) or scored by cotts.

(Not all these comments were aimed at you Scoob, more in general this thread and others who cry out for aspects of play yet fail to see what is infront of them sometimes.)

I don't think many would argue with that. Right now, a winger that runs forward would be a step in the right direction.

The response to this thread sums him up, can't be many more players that split opinion quite like this. I must say I saw the occasional flash of quality but it was incredibly rare, sometimes teams can afford to carry a "luxury" player but they need to prove they're worth carrying, for me he never did .

It seems top of the table Doncaster can afford such "Luxury". How we've slipped, it seems.

Helped us up the table when we needed it. Quickly forgotten when he got Blackwelled.

I bet Kitson wouldn't mind someone like cotts putting crosses in.

Cotterill away at Hull in the cup was one of the best winger performances I've seen from a United player. He suffered from often being the only one in the team who had pace/could beat a man.

The best winger perfomance: Michael Tonge vs Ian Hendon.

He was a 1 in 3 man, shite. It's players like him that fooked us

He was and probably still is SHITE. Terrible coward of a player, never forgive the spineless little twat for bottling it against the Scum. If ever there was a luxury player it was this waste of space. Fuck me, next you'll be telling me Carl Asaba was a great striker :D

Couldn't disagree more Swiss, if you take our current squad now. Could you tell me one winger, or possibly one striker who has a better ratio then playing at near/at their full potential 1/3 of the time? (and by that I do not mean a striker who has scored 1 in 3 of their games played, I'm talking about being literally unplayable and causing havoc at the back for opposing teams)

Or one player who has the ability to play to the standard Cotts does/did when he was on top of his game.

I think an easy point to make with what he has done for Donny this year with lets face it, not amazing options to hit upfront i.e. Billy Paynter, ian Hume and alike. If he was playing for us now with the options of Kitson, Miller (earlier on), Cressy, Forte..... Do I even dare say it "PORTER" we would have scored a lot more goals and I think we'd be top. We've been screaming our for a decent winger for ageeeees now.

(Yes i know Murphy looks sharp, but I am still far from convinced he is a out and out winger)
I Couldn't believe donny managed to get him to play for them in League one.

I realise he can cross a ball but at the time we had Quinn, he was by far a much better player all round, cotterill has found his level. In the championship I thought Neil Collins was poor, in league 1 he has been invaluable. I get the feeling that he will always split opinions but for me he probably did have a bit of talent, just couldn't be arsed to use it !

as a winger playing under Blackwell was a waste of time ,was it one game we had Cotterill ,Dyer and Treacy on the bench and Halford on the wing ? Blackwell just used to bully Cotterill in front of the south stand but he still made most of Beatties goals. Alan Woodward couldnt defend ,nor Colin Morris ,but it seems now that a winger has to also be a full back. But then again ,even if we had Jimmy Greaves our boo boys would find an excuse to slag him off.

all wide players are marmite, loved or hated they have 2 jobs , beat a player, then cross the ball

do both they are brilliant , do one then not the other , they look mediocre

its a hard act to get 100% right, even 50% right draws criticism, thats why good ones are cherished

I don't.

Cotterill has scored 10 goals from midfield, our top scoring midfielders have scored 3.
Cotterill has created 18 goals (assists), the most any of our players have managed is 6.

On that basis it's difficult to see how anyone can think we wouldn't be better off with him in the team.

Possibly the neshest player ever to wear the red & white stripes.

Couldn't get close to this man in that regard
