Agree fully he was fouled, I'm just trying to understand how the ref judged it not to be. (which is a real struggle)

I wasn’t trying to imply that was saying anything Rv, I was just stating something which I think is pretty obvious to those that perhaps don’t see it that way.

This a great example to show that VAR will still bring controversy.

The recent World Cup seems to centre around “whether there was contact”.
It seems if there’s contact then it means there should be a penalty.

Yesterday my view was that there was some light contact, then McGoldrick went down easily.
It was quite similiar to the Mo Salah incident. Wonder what decision VAR would have given?

The problem is that VAR can determine if there’s been contact but can’t determine the level of contact.

I’ve heard it said that once VAR comes in then players will deliberately try to invite contact then go down at the slightest touch.
In the World Cup there was a big increase in penalties, makes you wonder if they’ll be a large increase in the English league.

I personally think it’s pretty clear that the contact was enough to stop Goldy from putting the ball into an empty net, the Derby player got no where near the ball and should’ve been sent off.

I’ve got to be honest, I can’t believe some are even debating it, other than thick Derby fans that thought it cost them the game, not realising that we didn’t actually get the penalty.

That centre half for Derby was pretty useless, positionally all over the place, misplaced passes, often caught in behind by the pace(?!) of Sharp and McGoldrick and spent all his time moaning and protesting, feeling hard done by through his own ineptness.

The no penalty decision gave them a lifeline as they scored straight after 2 down to 1-1.thereafter we battered them ,it could have been five or six.

The most shocking thing is how many Derby fans thought it wasn't a penalty. I mean we are all biased but come on lads....

In the office today in Derby, all 6 Derby fans there (all bar one are normally very reasonable) said it was a dive by the 'red dog Forest bastard.'

Which is ridiculous (as a Hull fan in the office pointed out it was a blatent pen and red card) but gives you some indication why they might not be Goldies biggest fan.

After Roygbiv did his view from there were a number of Derby fans on their forum saying VAR needs introducing for Marriott's offsides and the backpass. A couple of Derby fans pointed out that sky showed Marriot was actually inches offside and that VAR would have seen them down to 10 men and possibly 2 nil down but that is largely ignored.

Like I say the group at work are usually reasonable but for some reason yesterday really got to them. They hate (but grudgingly respect) Sharp (played for Forest, always scores against them and rubs it in) and juat hate Goldie (Nottingham and Forest connections) so the fact they both scored and were so influential definitely contributed to their mardiness.

Still a strange one, though a good mate who's a Derby fan not in the office today may have hit the nail on the head though. Since they moved from the old intimidating Baseball Ground to the decent but still eminently soulless Pride Park - they never generate athmospheres or raw passion like we saw at the Lane on Boxing Day and he came away extremely jealous that they've probably lost that for good. Easy to take things like The Lane for granted but we should be thankful for it when it's like it was yesterday. Definitely a bit of jealousy in their comments...

I've spent the last few weeks bemoaning our lack of fight and team spirit ,dont get me wrong i know the lads care and im sure theyre a tight group but i was comparing them to the basset and warnock sides that used to fight to the very end and never knew they were beat ,well last night for the first time we showed that we have got it in us and if you want to get out of this division you've got to dig deep and win games not necessarily through footballing ability but sometimes through sheer bloody mindedness
I've been waiting to see this from the team for the last two seasons and was delighted that we finnalu came to the party

Nothing with change. The big teams will still get the decisions as they always have. VAR changed nothing at the World Cup - every corner was a wrestle-fest.

My main worry with 'technology' such as VAR is that vital decisions could be altered retrospectively ('after the panel has reviewed the evidence again' - having been pressurised by the top managers etc.) That way, you'll leave a game happy because we've won. Until you open the Sunday papers...

Agree...think that’s why there’s been a reluctance to bring it in.

Imagine a relegation decider....last game of the season.
In the final minute a player has the ball in the penalty area, just as a challenge comes in, the attacker puts his foot where the ball was, there’s minor c0ntact and the player falls down, the ref DOESN’T give a last minute penalty.

In the VAR studio it clearly shows that there’s been contact but they decide it’s minimal contact so agree with the ref NO PENALTY.
That team then gets relegated and then you get all the controversy and photo evidence of definite contact in the box.
In the studios after watching a dozen replays one expert will say contact so definite penalty, another expert says the contact was weak and the player made the most of it, so no penalty.

Is why I hope we NEVER move from the city centre location. It's one of the key things that make this club so special.

Old Trafford, different rules apply, during the Fergy years the technical area was known as ' The Land that Time Forgot '.

When Bryan Robson dived and ' saved' the shot from Jamie Hoyland I mentioned earlier I went berserk, it was that blatant and in full view of the ref.

A fellow Blade stood a number of rows in front of me turned round and said " We're at Old Trafford pal ". At which I immediately came to my senses and apologised to those around me for the unnecessary fuss caused by me being daft enough to assume normal rules applied.
