...we failed to beat the teams challenging us for promotion enough and generally bottled it in big games. Sadly, nothing has changed.

Not getting my hopes up. Hope I'm wrong.

I'd say the main reason was the mad second half at home against Oldham when we threw the game away and had two key defenders redcarded meaning dropped points in subsequent matches as well.

There are many reasons why we didn't go up, the top 3 for me being:
1) The 2-2 draw vs wednesday we should have won
2) The 2-3 loss vs oldham + getting 2 key defenders sent off and one injured
3) The loss of Ched for the last few games

There are so many reasons why we didn't go up, another one being that wednesday found some outstanding form when it really mattered.

Agree. No one could have predicted Wednesdays run off form(was it 13 wins and two draws from the last 15 ?). We didn't bottle it last season. We were beaten to second by a team on an amazing run and losing our centre forward

Against which team have we bottled it this season? Certainly not MK (unlucky)or Brentford(we were shit first half but excellent in the 2nd and should have pulled it back). I didn't go yesterday but my family who went said we didn't bottle it...we just didn't have the guile to break a team down(which seems to be a story in many games this season).

Only getting 2 points from the last possible 9 was what did it.

it was actually 2 points...and we would have won at Exeter if we needed to..even with 10 men. The team switched off in the second half as they must have realised they couldn't go up.

However, you could say we got 20 points out of the last 9 games last season.....not exactly the worst run

It was a terrible run. We threw automatic promotion straight down the shitter.

Yes but you can't say that for sure. That match was still a long way from the end of the season.

Nothing is ever certain, but there is no reason at all to believe we would not still have beaten all the sides that we subsequently beat following that match. In many cases we totally outclassed those sides.

So many reasons last season but I think the Oldham game was the turning point where the shit started to hit the fan.

We actually would have got away with our results against our promotion rivals had that game not turned so dramatically.

A deeper reason for our failure to go up was the loss of Henderson for virtually the whole season and that of Morgan for most of it. It was the failure to score in so many games that played a major part - when Henderson reappeared
for the last few games our scoring rate improved noticeably. Morgan's leadership skills were also sorely missed.

The only reason was we lost a penalty shoot out at Wembley.

Time to get over it and move on.

The primary reason for our failure to win promotion was our star striker's inability to keep it in his trousers.

I apologise for getting it wrong twice. My self-inflicted punishment is to write out the first ever Sheffield United side

that I saw play.

It was (in alphabetical order): Brook, Burgin, Cox, Furniss, Grant,Hawksworth, Hitchin, Hoyland, Shaw, Smith and
Weatherspoon.

oldham .. losing KMac with a hamstring..
everyone in the ground and on the pitch knew it.

There were loads of reasons why we didn't go up. You can stretch them from us bottling it against Stevenage to us being dan unlucky for Ched being sent down and the Pigs hitting an incredible spell of form. Wednesday got incredibly lucky, we imploded against Oldham and then felt the brunt of that at Walsall. K Mac getting injured at key dates, that fella from Brighton that came in for Ched and then got inujured getting sent back and Wednesday playing every fucking game before us in the run in did not help.

However you are right to be concerned about our results against the top teams. It should not matter if we beat the shit one's. Last season's 90 points would have seen us promoted in any of the 30 other years. If we sweep aside all the teams outside of the top 6, like we did last year, we will go up this year. I personally hope that we beat MK Dons, Swindon and Brentford at home and get results at Stevenage and Donny, but these will not decide the league for us. It is about consistency. If we get a result at Crawley then will our home games over Christmas against 2 shite teams we'll be top (I'd hazard a bet) and then it is up to us to continue that. Average 2 points a game, win at home, draw away n all that malarky.
