The Luckiest Win I Can Remember

League 1 = not rocket science.
No tiny players picked today. Scored from a set piece. Kicked their best player a lot. Exploited the weak ref. Shared out the niggly fouls and won 1-0. Excellent closing down in midfield. Very proud of the team spirit.
15-20 more of them and we will be there or thereabouts

Would you have been happier if JM had been sent off, their goal had stood and we had shown absolutely no fight whatsoever, to go on and lose 1-0? Serious question.

Maybe NA should have made the players do press ups on the pitch at full time, as an apology for the performance today. After all we don't want any semblance of confidence to creep back into the team do we?

We all recognise that things must improve but for goodness sake, take the 3 points, acknowledge that they were hard earned, albeit with a huge slice of luck and enjoy your beers this afternoon.

See my latest reply to TomJonesBlade in answer to your first paragraph.

Things must improve? IMPROVE?! That wins an award for most glorious understatement of the modern era. You call it hard earned. I call it lucky and nothing else.....

In reality and in the interest of fairness we lost that game. Forget our defender getting away with the worst tackle I've ever seen and forget Collins deflecting a cross with an outstretched arm.....they scored a fucking goal! I saw it go in during real time!

You will tell me it wasn't given so take it. I have no choice but to take it. It's a mercy win and a much needed one. That won't happen every week, in fact it will hardly ever happen and on the evidence of today I'm deeply concerned about what will actually happen in games to come.

We are utter utter dog shit and Coventry will rightly feel mugged.

He knew nothing about it and you know it. I want to start seeing a team with method, skill and desire winning games. I've no interest in seeing one that gets enormous slices of luck that it won't get very often.

I think you have been reading too many posts by that Rotherham United fan.

I really would never complain about how we get a goal. The corner was a decent one that took advantage of their main weakness their keeper.

Came away feeling pleased (if not delighted) with 3 points. Then I saw the Sky highlights, omg. Lucky to have 11 on the pitch and not to have lost, Coventry were not great but one things for sure they were a tad unfortunate. Long was brilliant today 9/10

A few of you are missing the point here. My comment regarding the goal was a throw away. A remark that Sharp knew nothing about it until he heard a cheer (he didn't). In the context of the general point I'm making the goal is immaterial. It served to get us a very lucky win, lets park that.....

My complaint is against the performance which to anyone with any understanding of football is nowhere near acceptable.

Coventry would had gone on and won today if George hadn't made that 1st half save and he went on to keep us in the match with a 2nd. Collins should never pull on a Blades shirt again. Every time he gets the ball he passes across the box or to the keeper. Teams only have to close him down quickly and he's like a rabbit in headlights.

You sound like a grunter ,we needed a dirty win ,who cares how we did it. 50 posts slagging Utd off is getting boring.

We had method. See Bergen's post on the other thread. We had a plan. It was ugly but it worked.

We had desire. It wasn't present in the first half, which needs addressing, but after a bit of tinkering and as the game wore on, we got stuck in and fought for it.

If you want skill, avoid third tier football. You see glimpses, but much of it is about being organised and strong.

There's a hell of a lot more I'd like to see from United, but I'll never complain about a goal or label it pathetic. It counts, that's all that matters.

Well said mate, agree 100%

Hammond chopped them to pieces, stuck up for his team mates and got in the ref's face. Ugly? Absolutely! But that's something we have missed all season.Every team needs an enforcer and he showed me those qualities today.

Funny how everyone praised Millwall for doing a similar job on us easier in the season isn't it, yet when we do the same it just shows how crap we are. The ref was soft as shit, verging on incompetent and guess what Hammond exploited it brilliantly.

Huge 3 points, don't give a flying **** how we got them.

Liking what I'm seeing here, if we can't play them off the park then we shouldn't be out battled either, how many times have we seen our players kicked from pillar to post and get nothing from refs in protection, let's fight be physical and buy some space for the lads to play in....

We'll see how pleased everyone is when we don't win another one for five games.

That shower out on the field got very lucky and it does not pacify me. If it does you then you're very easily pleased.

It worked because the ref let us off the hook big time. They should have won 1-0 at least.

We grab an ugly win against a team unbeaten in 11 and you say it's nowt but luck?

Show me the umpteen amazing attacks and shots on goal that Cov had which means we were blessed with a win. The sad thing is that if we were a bit less useless and had a bit more quality, we'd have thumped them. They were nowt special today.

Every win is hard earned. We got stuck in and we got 3 points. Job done.

You are sounding gutted we have won. We are a side lacking confidence especially at home and we have kept a clean sheet and won the game. Watching it live thereby mo way the ref and lino could have given a goal as they weren't in a position to see it. That is life at our level. The JMc tackle on front of us was strong hard and late but I didn't think it was a sending off and I thought the same type of tackle against Basham which you have not mentioned was also rightly given a yellow.

I didn't see the handball as many in th ground didn't so I can't comment on that.

The ref was awful and gave most challenges I'm their favour.

I was pleased we showed some fight and would not be bullied by a side who were doing their best to bully us and manipulate the ref. We limited them to two clear chances and we also had two chances and score one of them. The game plan works and we won. Not perfect but a great result. The team spirit showed and it looked like we had leaders on the pitch today. I will take that kind of performance at Scunny along with the same result.

Should McEveley have been sent off?

Should they have had a penalty of Collins' handball?

Should they have been awarded a goal straight after that incident?

Yes or no will suffice to each one.

You need help

No he bloody didn't! He got it wrong. Really wrong. Many, many times. That's not our fault. Should we go back to the ref and hold out hands up next time?

No ref lets you off. He has a job to do like everyone else on the pitch.

Yes perhaps they should have. But they didn't.

Agree completely with that ,you must see a different game on TV. We worked a lot harder than usual ,with a team low on confidence that is just what was required. I did call it on shoutbox at half time that we needed Sharp and Scougall for Woolford and Sammon but was disagreed with by the Tv watchers. Done it before myself ,you do see a different game and listening to the dicks they have commentating influences what you think , when they are just usually wankers just picking up a fee. Bet it was Birtles or Goodman they are fucking useless.

What is it that you want exactly, from this group of players? Without Baxter and (arguably) Wallace we lack quality on the ball; without JCR and Adams we lack pace.

What does that leave us? Work, commitment and organisation at best, which is what we got today. We worked hard and for once lady luck chose to smile on us. That gives me something to smile about, it's a shame you can't be happy with the win, even in some small way.

Until someone waves a magic wand or produces a complete overhaul in January then I am afraid we are stuck with what we have. No point constantly slating them, may as well get behind them because they really need it.

Interesting you bring that up, as I got some stick on Twitter for my real time thoughts for not hanging McEveley out to dry and for criticising Lameiras for his reactions (milking it afterwards and the feigning injury after Hammond's challenge only to spring up to take the free kick) and dive minutes after.

A decent number in the area of most of the challenges on Lameiras continued to boo him and booed him off when he was subbed.

Real time, close to the challenge, it looked a committed but late one which could go either way...

On the replay, it looks a modern day red card all over and he was a lucky man not to walk.

There really shouldn't be much debate here.

We are an awful side.

Coventry were better than us today.

Mceveley should have been sent off.

Hammond should have been sent off.

We had one 'shot' on target, where the ball hit Sharp, in 90mins at home.

We have no pace.

We play boring football.

We can't keep possession, we always get out passed in midfield.

Collins is woeful.

There's very little in there to disagree with IMO. Much needs to change before we can compete with the top sides. this truly is papering over the cracks as on another day, Coventry would have beaten us comfortably.

We might have got a bit lucky with the goal (our only genuine shot on target?) and their goal as well as that challenge, they could still only muster one shot on target pee half that Long saved.

I knew what to expect the second I saw the team sheet, zero creativity.

Sharp and Scoogs both seemed to scare them when they came on.

I must have missed the penalty appeal? Although I could have been asleep.

A dull game. A potentially lucky win, but a WIN!! I'll take that right now.

And I for one, am delighted to see players jumping in for committed challenges and winning the ball, long may it continue.

I will enjoy the season now I've realised we've no chance of going up and see it as steadying the ship season. Next year is the one.

3 points for a team that's more likely to get relegated than promoted - look at it that way, it's all about results right now.

We are a truly rubbish team - Accept that and it's much less painful. I think Adkins knows it now (though he's contributed to the mess, his signings have been shit) , so it's a'll about widening the gap from the bottom, until we can jettison half the squad and go again.

In t it about time we had some luck foxy we finally saw a committed performance let's have some more like that
Teams have been coming here and doing that to us, when the boots on the other foot our fans complain that's amazing!!
Well done United

Absolutely ridiculous Sitwell. Biased because of the commentators. seriously?

The ref made some iffy decisions both ways but the major ones went against Coventry

J-Mac should have got a red. It was so late, high and with zero control. He checked with the player first and I think the fact he wasn't seriously injured which swayed him towards a yellow (I'm not sure where that is in the handbook)

Hammond should have been punished for holding in the box and they should have had a penalty. He deserved 3 or 4 more bookings with hacks, shirt pulls and late challenges.
They should have had a goal or at least a penalty. It was hard to tell but about 80% sure over the line.

Whoever defended Woolford or Sammon needs a new TV set

As a performance it was committed, strong and we actually harried. We also played as a unit (which is a first this season). We restricted them to creating little but we created nothing and scored due to a howler and a big slice of luck. They were the better team though and were unlucky.

My worry is that these tactics are fairly effective against smaller and teams with a lot of skill but there aren't many of those in league 1.
