I feel a boycott on the cards topped up there the other day and just found this on my statement

I wonder why the 'H' was dropped in the first place?
The street is named after the Bramhall family who owned the Railway Hotel, but for some reason the street itself has always been 'Bramall Lane'.

Correct about the family surname spelling but I don't think they ever owned the Railway Hotel. They lived in a big white house on the corner of cherry street and Bramall Lane which has long since disappeared (on other side of road to the RH).

The H just disappeared due to incompetent council planners and officials over the years who couldn't spell - the H just being left out and over time being accepted as the way it was spelt. Same thing happened with family surnames over the years.

the H has only been dropped by the people of sheffield as countless posts on other forums will show as you can see on Roygbiv threads :)

From that link;

“Francis Chantrey according to Harold Armitage was a frequent visitor to Sheaf House which was a place of artists poets and writers”

Now I’ve not been in the Sheaf since about 2015, but that’s not how I remember it :rolleyes:

The artists meet a bit further up the road.
