...last night.

Gary Speed was on and, when asked about Palace's Victor Moses, thought he was 'poor' against us last week. And there's me thinking he's one of those stand-out players who is destined to go far. I really must get 'all mi badges'.

That token bird they have on had a Blades bauble on her PC monitor which - naturally - brought complaints from a few pigs fans. As if they didn't have enough to worry about.

The featured game was Forest v Preston and, given the 15 minutes or so they covered, I couldn't believe my eyes looking at a totally disinterested exhibition of shadow play given by one Mr. Michael Tonge.

Finally, the lamentable Steve Claridge, when asked about who should be the piggys new manager, launched into the standard spiel of 'massive team' blah, blah. and, that if it 'took off at Hillsbourough, they'd get 30,000+ gates'.

To hopefully lay this enduring myth to bed, the last time they averaged over 30k for a season was 41 (that's FORTY ONE) years ago in 1968. Sure they'll get the odd 30k gate, such as v. Norwich on the last day a couple of years ago. Only that was on the back of a week-long advert by Radio Sheffield urging 'everybody' to 'get on down to Hillsborough'. Have RS ever done similar for us? Thought not.

I wouldn't normally still be conscious at that time, but had to do a middle of the night pick-up from East Midlands, so had to remain sober and awake, which is not a good way to watch that show, it's a shocker and I'd prefer Gary Speed wasn't involved. He's less offensive than the cretinous Claridge.

Steve Claridge has a face that's just asking to be punched and his lack of insight and endless fund of platitudes make me want to scream. It's amazing to think that he's spent so long in the game and has apparently learnt so little. He wouldn't know an original thought if it came up and lamped him one and I wish it would.

I thought exactly the same as you regarding 30k+ attendances at H*llsborough, but I don't have your drive to do the research, so thanks for that.

I thought he was deliberately understated on Moses. He stood out for Palace against us, there is no way this was missed by our coaching staff.

I have almost given up on watching this show... we are NEVER the main game ffs and are lucky if we get anything but just the goals shown. I thought Speed actually spoke quite well, he has maybe done punditting like this a handful of times yet is miles better than that clown claridge!!
He never provides any insight into the game at all and speaks in such wooden english it is actually laughable. If he is ever asked a question he never answers it directley and starts veering off in another direction. The man is moronic.
Anyway, I agree with Bob I think Speed didnt want to build up moses too much. He is clearly a class player and is only going to get better, maybe were looking to spend in January?? haha... or not

There's more chance of me tatoooing an owl on my arse as there is us signing Victor Moses in January.

As for Speed's opinion of his performance at BDTBL, it re-enforces my opinion that most football people are thick as mince.

For me the most interesting moment was his refusal to say we want Billy back - as i said in another post -hes gone

Its not great, but Match of the day aint been the same since Des left.

It is miles better than ITV's efforts though!

Unfortunately terrestrial TV football shows are always about the safest and lowest common denominator....... nothing flash, nothing controversial and just does what it says on the box. Although some say Sky ruined football, let's face it the football shows on Sky are a touch above anything the BBC or ITV can deliver. Goals on Sunday with Chris Kamara. Easy Like Sunday mornin' ;)

Regarding the live games that the beeb are showing this season, it was my understanding that each team would be shown at least once and no team more than twice. I'm fairly sure yesterday was the third or forth tim the Barcodes have been on and if I'm not mistaken we haven`t been on yet (or did I miss it!!!)

I'd say he overstated Moses' performance. Like all of his colleagues, he was awful. Clint Hill took the worst of the lot crown though.

Yeah by far...

I tried watching the Newcastle vs. Middlesborough game on the HD channel an couldn't see much difference. At least sky put all little twinkly things on their menus and that, that stand out loads in HD oh yeah and Nigel Spackman needs his jumper de-fuzzing!

Goals on Sunday is very good, Chris Kamara is for Sky like what Alan Hansen is for BBC although less biast. If Kamara thinks the ref made a mistake he lets everybody know.

No, they only got about 12 games for the season.

I think Moses is a good player but as I said in another thread he wasn't great against us. He had lots of possession and ran the ball a lot but didn't hurt us at all.

Which woman was on with the blades bauble then?

they did say at the start of the season that no team would be on more than twice

I have emailed the Sports Editor at the BBC regarding the barcodes appearing 3 times and how they have failed to show the Football League coverage in a good light. Will publish any response received, don't hold your breath. Opportunity missed in exchange for viewing figures. They should remember that they are a public service broadcaster, not ITV driven by advertising revenue.

I thought one team could be on more than twice?

i think the way they have tried to get round it is by stating that no team would be on more than twice at home

there was a bbc blog about it and all fans of championship clubs were pretty disgusted by the bbc even back at the start of the season

needless to say the blog has now dissapeared

I didn't think anything could be worse than ITV's coverage - well done Beeb, you've managed it.

From that simpering dimwit who goes round the grounds, to the stupid bint who acts like she's fresh from Blue Peter, or Newsround. Claridge talks shit, the guest formats are cringeworthy and the presenter - I'll not even do him the honour of remembering his name. Awful, awful, awful programme.

They should just do what MOTD do and have the best match as the main match every week. The Championship is pretty evenly spread in terms of high-scoring games as any team can beat any other, so i'm sure this method would give a pretty good spread of teams as well as always guaranteeing a good match.

YAWN same old, same old , zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

How do they know which one is going to be the best match before it's been played? They often use the footage from Sky, or only send a large film crew to one match - the rest tend to just have one or maybe two cameras there. On MOTD each match will have a large number of cameras, whereas in the Championship they won't. They have to decide which match will be the "main event" before it's played.

Oh, i realise that, i was just saying what i think the best format is. It's a budget issue really. I guess also with covering 3 leagues of 24 teams rather than 1 it makes it particularly difficult to get the coverage you need.

I remember watching the GOS after our promotion season win away at watford (3-2) and the footage was like it was taken from a fan's camera phone by the corner flag! So i guess it is better than that at least.

Nothing can be as bad as the ITV highlights of matches shown from the camera next to the corner flag. You couldn't see a thing! No the Football League Show might not be perfect, but it's a lot better than anything ITV ever managed, and at least you get slightly exteded highlights of all the matches on the BBC Sports website.

BBC Response!

As mentioned earlier in the thread I emailed the BBC via the website comments section over the weekend. Unfortunately, the response from the editor of MOTD was pathetic - see below.

Basically we will keep on showing Newcastle, but if we don't, it only means they have appeared in 30% of our allocation. And the fact that we visited different grounds to facilitate showing Newcastle makes it alright.

"Although it was extrememly pleasing to see the BBC obtain rights to Live
coverage of the Football League, I am extremely disappointed with the
BBC's apparent obsession with Newcastle. I accept that they are having
a successful season and top the Championship, however tomorrow they take
part in a live game for the 3rd time in five games - half of your
season's allocation. I seem to recall that when you launched your
coverage, mention was made of an agreement that a club could only be
shown twice in the ten games, in fact I am sure it was publicised as
such on the BBC website. My question is why has this been changed?

The BBC had a great opportunity to showcase a number of different clubs
with their football league coverage, unfortunately you appear to have
failed the wider football community for the sake of viewing figures and
a "big club" mentality.

The thoughts of the Head of Sport would be appreciated.

Many Thanks"

The response:

Hi Ian,

Newcastle will have featured in 3 out of 6 live Championship games -
we've done Derby v QPR and Cardiff v Forest already and Bristol City v
West Brom is the next live game in the New Year. That will be six
different grounds visited in six games, Newcastle are ten points clear,
and had the biggest crowd in Championship history yesterday, so are
naturally of interest. However, if they continue to run away with the
league we may not show them live again, which would make it 3 Newcastle
games out of 10 for the season!

Kind regards,

Paul Armstrong
