The Ex-Manager Factor

We've never liked any manager on the whole. We only ever say nice things about them in hindsight.

Neil Warnock, who everyone seems to think is our messiah-in-waiting was slated by the fans from start to finish when he was actually in charge. Nobody was pining for him when he left. Now everyones had a sudden attack of nostalgia.
Even Bassett copped for it in his final couple of seasons.

Well there was certainly no hatred on Saturday night at "An evening with Dave Bassett" at Beighton Miners Welfare. Told a few good stories and despite having to leave as he was working for Sky the next day he spent an eternity posing for pictures with Blades. One interesting story he told was when McCabe asked for his help in identifying a new manager for us. Harry put some real time and effort into finding us the right man and just before he was about to speak to McCabe our Kev promptly hired David Weir. Bassetts choice/recommendation at the time?

Some things will never change

Unbelievably, even Bassett has been subject to plenty of abuse, scorn and vitriol on this forum.

Admittedly most of it was from one former(?) poster in particular.

From the way Harry spoke, at the time it was a realistic possibility

Solid season after taking over from Howe, potential to strengthen for a Championship promotion push, I don't see it. But if there was any serious opportunity to get him and we didn't that might rank as McCabe's biggest error since the Robson appointment.

Clough is getting some real hammer on the Burton forums. It's got to the point where the Mod has had to remove the more vitriolic posts

Last few games we have some quality arrivals in the summer and the future looks good.

Um. Where is the money coming from for these 'quality arrivals' please?

Season ticket input down by 10%, books show OL soaring. Eight million put in this year on fuck all.

Do you really think McCabe will support 'quality signings' of Championship status?

Do you really think he will retain Sharp and Adams and refuse all bids?

It's possible he wasn't on great money at the time and he wouldn't have been the first manager lured by a 'bigger' club in the doldrums. Agree it can seem far fetched but Harry must have thought it possible at the time. We were also prepared to back Weir so finances were available. We probably took the usual cheaper option. It's not like Kev to be happy to pay compensation is it

Sharp and Adams are going nowhere,
When we get rid of most of the remaining garbage which will be soon monies will be made available enough to get us out of this league.

We backed Weir right up to the point we let KMac go. Once more selling our best for a bag of chips and not replacing. Some of the rubbish posted in this thread just avoids facts. It is more important in the eyes of some to be right on an internet forum than anything else in the world. Take a bow Tyler and Ricky.

We didn't have a choice at the time with KMac thanks to the daft clause agreed previously in his contract that allowed him to talk to anyone who offered a packet of crisps and a mars bar. Not only have we let other clubs walk all over us but players and there agents too

Sharp and Adams are going nowhere,

Like Murphy, Maguire and Macdonald, then?

When we get rid of most of the remaining garbage which will be soon monies will be made available enough to get us out of this league.

Got a figure on that? Or is it just speculative? Are you so sure that money might not be steered into other areas? Like rectifying the Operating Losses, offsetting the ST shortfall or even ... laying a pitch?

Keep clapping.

Got figures on that?

Keep asking this, and people like you are all 'la-la-la, not listening'

100% I was going to get a reaction like that from you Pommpey lad like leaving out a hand line :).
BTW Billy can only do damage in this division of which I'm grateful for no bids for him.
Che still has a lot to prove
Again I say the two are going nowhere.

Or he just doesn't see your post because he's got everyone on ignore.

Which, if he is on a forum, is the most pointless fucking piece of shit going.

You debate, but you only hear who you choose to hear in response.

Brilliant. What a fuckwit.

He even tried putting Keith Edwards on ignore by asking for alternatives to Radio Sheffield for coverage of the Blackpool game in a thread earlier on in the season. He actually listened to the game on Radio Lancashire instead.

How would we have got him though? He was already at Burnley then. He's a great manager though.

To answer the initial OP's (valid and relevant) question, I think it's the mere tribalism of football. This happens at every club, and we are no exception. For what it's worth I think that Wilson and Clough were both sacked too early, and I don't want Adkins to fall into that category. We villify ex-managers as a group of fans because we are entitled and have been let down for half a decade. Wilson and Clough weren't bad as such, but did not produce the promotion season we feel we have owed to us.

Personally, I don't think we are owed or deserve promotion. Certainly this league is poor and we should have left it for dust years ago, but that doesn't give us a golden ticket to promotion, does it? We have to compete consistently over a full season, and with the exception of the first season in League 1, we have not acheived that. This is nothing to do with the management, and everything to do with the board. Past managers will always be blasted, but it doesn't mean the criticism is warranted, or even factually correct. It's just football, innit? Unless we win 7-0 every week, some cunt will always stick his oar in, talking about how we're not good enough. It's specifically acute at this club over the past 5 years, due to us being a level below where we should be. As it was, as it is, and always will be.

Well - come up with the figures, then. How much have players been sold for and how much have we bought players for. Finally, how much money is going to be available in the summer to bring these assumed quality signings in as well. It's not asking for the solution to dark energy here. You lot think that come late August we are going to be rid of a fair few suitcases we have been dragging along and in their places we are going to have this decade's Michael Brown, Stuart McCall, Phil Jagielka, James Beattie, Chris Morgan, Alan Woodward and Tony Currie.

Where's the money coming from?

He had just had his first season there. A solid one without success. Maybe the lure of a bigger club? As said, our Kev doesn't like paying compo though

Perhaps one of your excellent O.P.'s would serve a purpose for this debate Roy.

The same source that purchased Brayford and Sharp and fund loan signings Baptiste, Hammond,Sammon,Edgar who are on tasty money.
When the cull is complete then we'll see some movement.

He had enough backing in the summer to do far more than he did. He chose to bring in about 12-15 poor players, many on good contracts.

We were title favourites and finished about 30 points behind the league winners. We were a much worse team than the one that ended his first season. We failed miserably in the play offs. We had assembled a squad that is still hindering us to this day. How that season could be considered anything other than a failure is beyond me. The fact he tried to tell us it was acceptable sums up his mentality.

Cup performances are largely irrelevant. They're just a bonus. We never set out to get to a league cup semi final. We set out to be promoted to the Championship, and failed spectacularly.

The situation he inherited doesn't change the fact there were some good players in that squad. We still had the Maguire/Collins partnership, Doyle was still decent, Coady, Murphy and Baxter too. We still had a stronger squad than most. Then Brayford, Harris and Scougall arrived. No denying he got a lot more out of certain players though. Shame he could only do it for a few months.

I'm all for giving a manager time if he shows enough promising signs, but Clough took us backwards in his second season and out of 20+ signings only one could be sold for a profit. The football was negative, tedious and embarrassing. His standards and expectations were totally out of line with what they should be at this club in this league. It's hard to make a case for a manager like that to continue.

Excellent post!
Frank and fair.
I'm sick to death of reading the clap trap about the cup runs, as if it proves he was some sort of Messiah, it was based on an awful lot of luck.

A certain manger said I'd swap going out of the European cup,the FA Cup and the League cup in the first round if you could guarantee me winning the league. Why is that he was asked.
The league is the one that tests you. You have to have every single aspect of football management about you to win it.
You have to have endurance, talent, be a bit daft, strength, physiology, every aspect. plus
very good players its a real endurance battle over 9 months.

He inherited a far better squad than the one he left behind.
He disregarded the board and its transfer protocols, in an arrogant you cant touch me I'm bigger than you manner. This has saddled the club financially, trashed the princes investment and weakened us for several years going forward.
The club were 100&% right to get rid.

Christ. It's just lost on you, isn't it? All of the above came at a cost of losing players far more able and valuable than those who came to play for us in their place. For Brayford, read Maguire. For Sharp, read Murphy. If you are suggesting Hammond, Edgar and Sammon are anything of the like we need to get promoted, I will point straight at our league position and say, 'there's your proof.'

It's all green meadows, birdsong and the sound of flowing water in your mind, isn't it?

pommpey

May as well just merge this with 'The Clough Factor' thread.

There's only ever been two managers who I've wanted out from the club.
Both set us back a long long way and did a lot of damage to the club.
One was controversially sacked, which is why there's still some passionate debate.

But at the end of the day we talk about it on the forum and then we decide I was right. :)
(parody)

I was never particularly scathing of any manager until Clough. I understand that some simply can't do the job and we move.on.
Clough on the other hand was not only a failure, he was also a bit of arsehole in the process.

The only reason I even continue to mention his name is because the Cult of Clough won't let it go, and in the process continue to slate Adkins in the harshest terms whilst selectively ignoring the preceding circumstances. They never wanted Adkins and they will make damn sure that everyone hears it.
Brilliant summary, Sir.
Barnsley's got Ian McMillan, we've got Tyler Durden.
