While at the Evening With Nigel Adkins I got talking to a couple on our table who said that they stay in The Copthorne (or whatever its called) on matchdays due to living a fair drive from Sheffield. They apparently got quite friendly with the players over the past couple of seasons and told me some very interesting stories.

Obviously all of this could be a pack of lies, I'm just passing on what I was told, so take it with a pinch of salt (although some of them are very believable)...

On Brayford
He took a £27k/month pay cut to join us. He was completely ostracised at Cardiff and there were "serious concerns" about his mental state prior to his first spell with us (hense the "I needed you more than you needed me" tweet after his loan finished).
He also didn't have that great a relationship with Clough and he signed because of his love for the club and the fans. In their words, there is "no chance" of him following Clough to his next club.

On Collins
They definitely did have a row and it was very personal. Clough did everything he could to get him out of the club including making him train alone, but Collins dug his heels in and rejected several permanent moves and pay-offs.

On Cuvelier
Clough completely froze him out after his return from injury (for no apparent reason) and made him train with the kids.

On Diego
As rumoured before, the fall out did indeed stem from him rocking up to training in a flash car with a personalised plate and there was genuine interest from Juventus and Sunderland, but no more than preliminary chats with his agent/dad, no concrete offers were made.

On McNulty
McNulty hated playing under Clough for obvious reasons. After one of his public dressing downs, MM's dad had to be physically dragged off Clough. Their relationship was strained following the nightclub incident, which Clough fully blamed him for.

On Maguire
When his transfer was all but signed and sealed, Maguire went to Shirecliffe to say his goodbyes to the players, staff etc and had bought presents for the backroom staff at the Academy (tea ladies etc) but Clough refused to let him in to the training ground and told him he wasn't welcome.

On Murphy
He has genuinely never been happier in his career and absolutely loves life in Sheffield and at SUFC. He and his family are very settled here and he wants to stay "for many seasons to come".

On Done
See Murphy

Like I say, it could all be complete rhubarb but some of it definitely adds up for me.

Why didn't Murphy and done also hate clough?!?

I'm guessing the stories are all one sided..

None of that seems improbable.

Because they're model pros so unlikely to get on Cloughie's wrong side. Think of all the people that know you. There's bound to be some who don't like you, that's life, particularly if you have to manage people for a living.
Go to any workplace and in most cases some people like their boss, some are indifferent, some will dislike him or her, the odd one hates all bosses.
Murphy and Done probably took the view that he could be worse, got their heads down and got on with it. And as Porter is rumoured to have told Weir 'I'll be here longer than you...'

They may well have done, but perhaps as you suggest they had no reason to hate him because they were one of his "favourites"

From what they were telling me, it sounds like the dressing room was pretty much 50% pro-clough and 50% anti-clough.

They seemed very keen on offering the info, I didn't ask them about anybody other than Diego. I should really have asked about Butler but I only thought of that once I'd left.

It was a bit of a tongue in cheek comment... Everyone else mentioned had something negative to say about clough....

Glad to hear that Harry was snubbed completely by Clough though. I'm fond of clough anyway, but good to hear he fucked him off after he'd signed for hull

Clough is an absolute jebend. You can see that from a mile off.
None of this surprises me, and while I'm always tetchy about accepting the truth to these stories, these all seem totally believable.

One missing though. Anyone know what happened with Butler?

Koeman ought to have slogged him one.

If the stories are true (and it's a big if without knowing the facts) that would indicate the NC inherited his dad's character but not his ability. You can get away with being such a disciplinarian if you are able to back it up with league titles and European cup wins. In NCs case, he had nothing but a 'promotion' from the conference (although he wasn't at the helm when it was confirmed) to draw on.

In short, people will accept being treated like crap if means being part of a successful outfit.

I'm not trying to be overcritical of NC here by the way. he clearly has some ability as a manager, and you can't help the traits you inherit. It's just in his dad's case, being an outspoken, domineering disciplinarian on one hand ,and a genius on the other, was a perfect combination. But you can't have one without the other, and there will probably never be another Brian Clough.

Why?
Complete dick move. Harry had been at the club all his life, saying his goodbyes is nice for him and the staff he's saying goodbye to - only a complete self righteous knob would stop him from doing that.

Yes great that a lad that came up through our academy and gave us 4 good years service before leaving for a very healthy fee gets treated like shit.

What was he supposed to do, stay here until he's 35?

Not letting him say good bye isn't smart, it is petty and vindictive. Clough's major failing was his 'I know best' streak and I've previously written about how Simon McCabe learned from Doyle how bad morale really was.

I like the bloke and wanted him to succeed but the more I hear about him, the happier I am he's gone. He gave us some good times in the cup and kept us up but he was not a good man manager. His dad could get away with it, he couldn't.

Onwards and upwards under the new regime!

.

Music to the ears that.

I do think it's in Jamie's best interests to stay too - you can tell he's not the most naturally confident of characters & you'd think Wowzer Nige could only be good for him with his sky-high positivity & that he'll raise him to even higher levels. And I sort of get the impression that Matty Done's slightly introverted too, & that he'll really benefit from the enhanced man-management we're all expecting.

I know exactly what happened with Butler and believe me it's not half as juicy as you'd like it to be. Sometimes players just don't fit in.

im pretty sure the collins one is true i talked to a youth coach not long back and he said the exact same thing that clough secluded him from the rest and made him train alone .

As you say, who knows where the truth lies, but I've also heard stories, some seem to reflect what you've written. I guess most managers and/or players have fall- outs. Alex Ferguson was notorious for getting rid of players he'd consider bad blood, so I guess it's something that happens in such a pressure cooker environment. I guess that when players feel they've been treated like adolescents it's not surprising they sometimes push back, thus increasing any hostility between both parties.

It could be that Clough was a disciplinarian and that some players had no respect for his approach, but who knows? What any of this proves I'm not sure, but what does matter is what Adkins is creating amongst his squad. Let's hope the coming months are gossip free and we begin to see the team make the type of inroads we all hope for.

I heard that too. He trained with the U18's and was a model professional with them and apparently a pleasure to work with.

Clough made him move all his stuff out of the First team room and put it in with the kids making it obvious there was no way back. all te bollocks excuses about 'calf strains' was just an excuse and Clough had no intention of playing him again, even when we were desperate at Swindon.
Hardly the mark of a 'big man' when you can't swallow your pride and do what's best for the bigger picture.

Deary me it does seem like some individuals on here would love to see Clough crucified or something. I wonder if the fictional spiteful stories will still be making their appearances in 10 years time.

It's all hear say but to add to a couple of the points above..

Brayford - Sounds about right that's around £6.2k per week. He'll probably be on £10/12k with us.

Collins - Someone I know bumped into Collins and he said that it was something to do with the Maguire sale that made Clough fall out with him. Maguire had apparently taken advice from Collins and signed for Hull. Clough didn't like that.

Diego - The number plate rumour was posted on here and the baseball cap one. To add to this, I don't know what the club rule is on cars but Michael Doyle was driving a VW Golf and I saw Tel Kennedy the other day in a bog standard Vauxhall Astra. These are hardly cars you would associate with football players, so maybe some truth in that rumour too.

As said, these are just whisperings that get passed around so who knows.

Not true
He's not the messiah, he's a very vindictive, spiteful, controlling, childish, naughty boy.

Load of crap ,but even if it was true it just goes to prove that the majority of footballers are egotistical ,childish bellends. Maybe listening and doing what a manager requires might enhance their careers.

Not at all but he made the rod for his own back by falling out with too many players.

I wonder if the fictional spiteful stories will still be making their appearances in 10 years time.

Not sure what your agenda is here? A guy posts some stuff he's heard and you say he's making it up and spiteful?

Lets only post stuff that's 100% fact and in the public domain then and watch this board wither and die in a few days.
