The Case For The Cup

Just on a curious note as don't want to get too far ahead. Say if we beat Blackburn in the cup and drew Brighton/Grimsby and beat whoever in the draw. The 2 Manc sides are likely to qualify for the Champions League this season. Does the FA Cup runner up get a random Europa League spot as the winner definitely will?
No not no more, it changed about 5 or 6 years back. The spot the runner up used to get goes to the Premier league 7th spot now.

This is all well and good but we've gone from losing out on promotion and welcome to the wilderness years to winning the FA Cup and a place in Europe in a little over a week. Blackburn won't be easy, neither will the semi. Brighton are capable of winning the thing it's not just the Manc times. However I agree the performance against Spurs gives grounds for optimism.

As I’ve always said, if I get to sit at Wembley in a Blades shirt and sing “Abide With Me”, I will die happy.
It would be a real shame if you died just before the game started.

I take Hecky's point about the cup games. It's a bit of a free hit, there isn't the same pressure as the League games and the fan 'vibe' is different. I think there's a bit of reverse psychology going on too, I'm sure he wants to win EVERY game but this approach should mean the players and fanbase are more relaxed than they are for League games.

It's interesting now, because we will be favourites for the Blackburn game with the incentive of a Wembley appearance, so that will bring a bit more pressure to the game.

I don't know if anyone else has realised this but up to now, we've scored 9 goals in our FA Cup run, scored by 9 different players.

Jebbo
Bogle
McBurnie
Norwood
Egan
Anel
Billy
Berge
Ndiaye

I think the prospect of playing a Sheffield United side that recently outclassed Spurs is distinctly less appealing than playing a Sheffield United side who went out meekly for the nation to see on the BBC. That'll help us in the run-in.

It's a prospect that's even less appealing when you consider that we didn't play our strongest team from the start (something which several Spurs fans have noted on their forums, much to my immense pleasure).

We need to take every game seriously - it's what winners do. And if we do become the first team in history to win the FA Cup begrudgingly, so be it; it's always cooler to win when you don't look like you're trying.

If we do manage to get past Blackburn which is no guarantee and Man City are the team we are up against if they manage to get through to the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League they are due to be played Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 April, with the returns scheduled for 18 and 19 April. Which is the Tues/Wed before the FA Cup semis. It could be interesting to see what type of side they would put out if they were through to CL semis.

The slight downside to beating Blackburn would be the possibility of a semi against a Manc team. Getting dry bummed in the sunshine by either would be grim.
Yes but wouldnt we get a Europe place for being runners up IF the Manchester club(s) are in the champions league ?

If we get past Blackburn lets hope we don't meet Man City at all, it would mean Doyle and Mcatee would have to miss out.

I’m hoping we can get past Blackburn which will be tough and take revenge on Burnley at Wembley (or Fulham)

when alls said and done whats left in the fa cup is 3 games , one after the leagues season is over
so just 3 hours of football clashing in 9 weeks of league football

At this point the FA Cup represents now, at most, 2 extra games before the end of the league season. They're professional footballers ffs, of course they have capacity to play in both. It shouldn't even be a debate imo
This.

Ndiaye breaking his duck, buzzing for scoring against Spurs and only playing 25 minutes is 🤌😘

Hull was a good one, at least we turned up for that, however completely take your point.
Half time belting out blades songs with thousands of others in the concourse v Hull was one of my favourite moments supporting the blades.

A mixture of pride, hope but mainly disbelief that we’d actually turned up at Wembley and were 45 away from an FA Cup final as a League one side.

Took them a few minutes to bring us back down to Earth but it was good whilst it lasted

I want us to get to the semi-final now because my son and daughter want to go to Wembley, it will be difficult to beat Blackburn in the Quarters but I'd love to. Semis would be hard though as we'll be facing either a top 3 or top 8 full strength PL side.
Don’t worry,Hecky would play Ndiaye for most of the second half.

I am sure Hecky takes every game seriously. however, it,s common sense to make changes for the cup game against Spurs. I must admit I was surprised he made nine changes from the previous game against Watford. in the second half, I was hoping Ndiaye would be coming on. I was confident he would score for us. A quality goal from a quality player.summed it up perfectly. although I thought it was like the Ricky Villa goal for spurs in the cup final. Hecky will be making changes tomorrow at lunchtime. Hecky is proving to be a great manager for us.

Well yes I'd love to be in one but to win it is all that matters, you aren't gonna remember being in one fondly are you if we lose, it would just join the list of every semi final and playoff final we've lost wouldn't it. But let's Hope we get to see that opportunity one day, hopefully on June 3rd.

I know plenty of older Blades, who, like myself, just want to see us in an FA Cup Final. A lifelong dream. A win would be the icing on the cake but a final is the thing.
