One I'll never forget was in1961, it was against what was then a west German team, Eintracht Frankfurt (W.G). It was novelty to play an overseas team back then and at a mid week game we got a gate of nearly 20,000.
We won by 3 -1. Pace got 1 and Billy Russel got the other 2.

Ronnie Simpson was our left winger back then and he had a shot like a cannon ball and In the second half when we were kicking towards the kop
Ronnie came running on to a ball on the left hand edge of the penalty box and caught it just right, I was stood on the Kop directly behind it and could see it was going like a rocket left hand top corner, goal all the way no problem, because their keeper was covering his far post against the header, he dived but there was no way he was going to finger tip save it, it would have just brushed his hand away .
But he didn't try to palm it away, what he did do was bring his fist up like a hammer to hit the underside of the ball and punch it over the bar, I couldn't believe my eyes .

Half price balty pies, last game of the season...

I can't remember the game(s) but I remember George Long pulling an absolute stunning reaction save at short range

All the saves Mel Rees made in the game against Liverpool at Home. I don't think I've ever witnessed a finer performance. Its as if he knew he didn't have much time left in this world. Sadly missed, Blades legend even after only 8 appearances.

John Hope from Roger Hynd of Birmingham - a close range screaming header, top corner bound, and he bloody caught it.

John Hope - Bramall Lane end - v. Newcastle on 1/4/72. John Tudor absolutely smashed it, Hope dived and, with the heels of his hands, turned it over the bar.

Best goal keeping performance I can recall was kelvin Davis for Southampton at the lane. Pulled of saves that looked impossible.

Tudor didnt play in that match. He played in the match in August and scored the winner.

100% this. Likened to Gordon Banks save Against Pele. Best I have seen at Bramall Lane by a long way

Hodgy v Wolves is one that stays with me. One of their wingers (Hinton, I think) cut inside, and hit a fabulous shot from distance, heading towards the Kop goal, top left-hand corner. It was a dry day, so the ball was travelling at pace, and had swerve on it (not as much as the modern balls, though). Hodgy leapt to his left (he was reputed to be a good gymnast) and held the ball in both hands, landing on the hard ground somehow without letting the ball leave his grasp. One of the saves that helped build my fascination for watching goalies. It probably was not as good as I recall, but as we were standing right behind the line of the ball, it made a great impression on me.

I’m pretty sure the answer is every save made by Alan Kelly.

One he made against Barnsley where the ball was heading in and whilst in mid-air he managed to get his hand under it and lift it over the bar. Reyt stop.

You beat me to it ! Mel Rees was also superb .

I followed the alert to your reply, and my eyes alighted on your post one above, 'and then you woke up'! Fortunately I saw the proper reply below it immediately after. I assume the match was 1961 or 62. I'm delighted your memory confirms my recollection - without films, photographs, etc., it is hard to remember details from so long ago. Can you remember anything more of the match or the save?

The only time I've ever jumped up to celebrate a goal and not known why we hadn't scored a goal until seeing the highlights on TV in the evening.

You might have been sat/stood in an angle similar to mine. I still don't believe it. We all cheered too in our area, enough certainly to get 'aaaaaaaah'd' at, by the away fans.

I watched it a few months ago on youtube. I don't look at it so badly now, mainly because it would have been a decisive goal. And at least we can say the only thing that knocked us out was one of the finest saves of all time, then it seems more palatable.

Maybe I should put this in the 'unpopular thoughts' thread?! :)

It's certainly up there with the Banks save IMO. not as good of course, but in the same league. Certainly in the top 5-10 saves that I've ever seen live or on tv (or now youtube).
