we had a go at getting up got to the play off final , this means speculating to accumulating , ie upping the wage bill

we missed out , and unfortunately had to cut our cloth

Why? Why is it, after each play off final surrender, whoever has been running the club has given up immediately? Each time it has set the club back years.

And I think decimate is a fair word to use to describe what has happened to our defence after the play off final.

Many other teams who just miss out on promotion show resolve, strengthen and go for it again. We just give up.

Look at Huddersfield for example. They just missed out that are building on that and have got even better. McCabe would have got rid of half of their good players and they'd be hanging around in 8th.

For all the wailing about dismantling the squad, is there any team with more than a handful of the same squad members they had three seasons ago..?

Who knows. Most of them have signed players who are as good as, or better than, the ones they sold off. We didn't bother to do that, unfortunately.

Didn't you mean 'spend the PAYE money on more and more players'?

Spending money isn't a golden ticket to success. Cardiff (touted as a good example of 'going for it' in the past, and to counter your Huddersfield example...) have discovered. Forest who've spent a fortune on their squad, not got anywhere quickly and now sit just above the relegation zone haven't got two coppers to rub together (not a gay policeman joke...)

You could include Burnley, Watford, Reading, Blackpool, Portsmouth all recent PL, all had parachute money, all now bottom half of the Championship.

Eventually, you have to turn down the money furnace, no matter how much you want promotion. There will always be someone more stupid or with deeper pockets...

Duncs, of course spending money does not a guarantee success. I am, of course, aware of the existence of Bryan Robson.

I also agree that you can't put cash in indefinitely if you get nothing back.

But chucking money at the problem for one season at most and then conducting a fire sale - and then doing it again - is equally dumb. And we are not Cardiff. that's a strawman. McCabe had the money not to dismantle the 2009 side (and to keep hold of Brown in 2003). He just chose not to. His decision, fine, but when you do the same thing 3 times in 15 years and it fails every time don't be surprised if people get frustrated.

And the last time I checked Portsmouth had plenty of success with their money, and despite your predicitions to the contrary are still in existence. In fact, every single team you name in your list is in a better position than we are at the moment - so how does that make our way the right way?
