Last season was solely because we at last got a manager we deserved, not one we were presented with.
Who hired him, "we" or the despised McCabe?

It's not the 'think Liverpool' quote which pisses people off. It was made by Phipps, a well meaning if footballing naive businessman to placate people asking what the fuck is going on? I think if anyone thought we were going to emulate the bindippers they needed their bumps felt.
It is more the whipped up frenzy of 'game changing investment' when HRH came on board when people were suspicious of what McCabe was up to apropos of fuck all and then a few years later, failure upon failure, manager sacking galore and people again asking when is the big day in the sun for the supporters and he 'clarifies' (i.e. he bullshitted) that we'd have substantial investment when we were promoted. Hey presto, here we are in the Championship (with apparent cash bonuses from sell on clauses and ITK information from WWF that this season's transfer budget is 'substantial') and all we can muster is a jock league centre back, a PL rookie loanee, and an out of favour striker we should have bought three seasons ago when he was good. 20/1 bar. Holding on to current players is irrelevant. It's not a choice thing. It's mandatory. We should be doing this in spite of all other attributes in the transfer period.
Oh, and now, instead of fax machines and 'not managing to get the deal over the line' we are now blaming agents. How original and edifying.
It's not the end of the world, it's no reason for meltdown but it is disappointing. The only thing I have faith in is Wilder will not allow this club to be relegated. I believe in him and most of the players. The board i wouldn't trust to draw a rifle and guard my shit.

There were clear, unambiguous "jam tomorrow" statements over the last 4 years that indicated that our spending would rise significantly after we were promoted.
Whilst we have spent this window, only someone who was being deliberately obtuse and/or always defends the club at all costs Would argue that the spending now lives up to the promises that were made. It is nowhere near what many teams in the division have spent and that was what was implied.
The owners simply don't have (or less likely, won't spend) the money they promised. Sure, they backed Wilder as needed last season, and they've spent this year, and credit to them, but they have not done what they said they'd do and I am at a loss as to why people pretend otherwise.
And I say all this whilst being basically fine with what's been done this window. At least the good players are all still here for once.
I'm not sure the Mcabe clappers would be all that clappeh (see what I did there) if we were bottom on the league.
If people are thinking that Wilder has sufficient backing then they are kiddding themselves, Wilders patience will only last so out no.
Great post well sad
The best way to deal with these snippets from the board is to take them with a pinch of salt and not use them to try and win an argument on the interwebz.
They may be misguided soundbites but using them as basis of fact to attack a point of view that you don't agree with suggests a lack of ability to form an argument.
So what you're saying is we shouldn't believe anything they say?

And presumably as soon as he appointed the likes of Clough and Adkins you were straight on the message boards declaring what an idiot McCabe was?Have a guess.
Same bloke who hired every shit manager since we were relegated from the Prem. Here's some further info: those sackings cost the club too.

Forgive me, but isn't it results on the pitch that are ultimately relevant, not money spent on transfers? Waving the cheque book about doesn't always lead to success, on the contrary, our porcine neighbours have famously splashed the cash on a £10m striker who wouldn't take a penalty in a play off and now have a significant amount of egg on their snouts.
The team has been invested in, but this investment has been sensible, and to a budget - I suspect most on here would realise what working to a budget means in real life, why should this suddenly not apply because we are talking about a football club.
Delighted to be building a team the right way - it makes everyone even more pissed off that 'Tin-Pot Sheff U' play teams off the park.
Every point I agree with you but given Wilders ambition and talent just imagine what could be achieved if the purse strings were loosened.
Last week was the time to do this and capitalise on our inertia of our promotion. January could be to late, let us hope Wilders genius can keep us in touch until then perhaps McCabe and the Prince will then realise the opportunity to be had
How do you capitalise on inertia of our promotion?
i
Smart arse
You left 2 out deliberately ?
Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion. This includes changes to the object's speed, direction, or state of rest. Inertia is also defined as the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at a constant velocity.
In other word keep moving forwards
Has he got pace?when he said think liverpool he probably meant Ken Dodd
Less to do with any definition of the word than your sentence which makes no sense whatsoever.
I love the fact that in the (somewhat small) minds of some, they've now managed to convince themselves that Clough was sacked due to "lack of ambition and investment".
Not that he spent a small fortune putting together a pitifully slow, dull and defensive side that couldn't seriously challenge the top 6 in league one.
It's actually quite funny that anyone would seriously think he didn't have money to spend. We've only just got shut of some of his most expensive mistakes.
Did Clough spend that much?
I think he brought Coutts and Freeman in (and possibly Basham) who've done pretty well.
He bought Brayford but bar that were there any other big spends?
Marlon King wouldn't have been cheap, the drug loving scouser, sure there was a load of other dross we've moved on.
Not big spending though, freebies.
The League One years tend to merge in my mind but I think Clough also sold Maguire and for all his failings did bring in money from the cups.
Either way, we didn't spend big then and haven't justified 'think Liverpool' or any other idea of major investment.
All we've done is spend what you might think a conservatively-managed big club in League One would, similarly with this season.
Either way, we didn't spend big then and haven't justified 'think Liverpool' or any other idea of major investment
What did 'think Liverpool' mean to YOU?
(and do you remember the rest of the quote?)
That's exactly what it was!
Well I thought he said Acrington Stanley.Every transfer window that quote has been misinterpreted by fans unhappy with the lack of big signings.
Yes Jim Phipps did say it in September 2013 after the Prince had become joint owner. The full quote is,
'Think Liverpool rather than Manchester City. The Prince, like Mr McCabe has built a successful business from scratch and there are certain principles that he always adheres too'.
Yes, it wasn't Phipps' greatest quote, as I'm not sure Liverpool in 2013 were a shining example of sensible spending. But he didn't mean that our levels of spending would match Liverpool's, he was trying to dampen the level of expectation!
Next transfer window keep the fax machine jokes, but please no more misinterpretation of the Think Liverpool quote!
The simple facts are it took us too long and too much money to get out of L1. Had we gone up a couple of seasons before, as you say, the money we could have spent at that time would have bought us better players than it would now. And there would have been more of it.Even though it's been stated on here and elsewhere so many times, it still doesn't appear to have sunk in. A £2m player 5 years ago now costs £10m. It doesn't mean he's any better, he just costs more. It therefore follows that the overall standard of football in this division hasn't changed either. Is anyone telling me that the pigs team, for example, is any better than our triple assault team was? Is it fuck.
What we have, which the other teams don't, is an academy which rolls players out for a fraction of the cost of duds like Rhodes. In Brooks we have potentially the best player in the division. All we have to do is hang on to him. We also have a team ethos that the others in this league would die for.
Don't think Liverpool. Think Leicester or Huddersfield.
