Can hear the 'Cod Army' roar from his back garden
Following the shambles of relegation, we needed to get the fans back on board playing a brand of football long gone from the Lane and Danny brought that back. OK, he inherited some decent players for this League but he got us playing and was influential in what could have been one of the best seasons for the Blades. 90 points, 92 goals and for me, it brought back the kind of spirit and match day experience that I hadn't seen since probably the 4th division season when we just knew we were going to score goals and win. With automatic promotion freakishly snatched away with a mixture of our main rivals going on an unbelievable run and our top striker being sent down, he then has no control over Huddersfield gifting us a golden chance only for 3/5 penalty takers to miss. As we all did, he must have looked to the FGs and ask how did that happen.
There were rumours that he offered his resignation last Summer. Whether this was down to the failure to go up or because he knew what was coming is up for debate but he had to deal with more budget cuts, losing Ched (who may have gone anyway), he loses Quinn, Lowton (probably inevitably) and Williamson which adds up to 60 odd goals and numerous assists from last season and has to replace them with the purse strings very tight.
Many will argue that his signings have been crap but again, misfortune and sales haven't helped. Would we be where we are now with Miller and Blackman up front ? It has been a major let down this season after last season but when you take a step back, it's a wonder we are where we are in the League given what's happened.
We'll never know a lot of what's happened behind the scenes, maybe Danny has lost the players but I can't help think that luck's been against him at crucial times in the 2 years he's been with us. Antonio doesn't get a 97th minute winner, a penalty scored, a different court result and things could be completely different.
Unfortunately, all the good work from last season has now been undone, subject to a totally unexpected end to this season and Danny's time with us will probably be looked at as a failure but he brought a smile back to the club for 99% of last season and had last season ended just slightly differently, who knows.
