Following the shambles of relegation, we needed to get the fans back on board playing a brand of football long gone from the Lane and Danny brought that back. OK, he inherited some decent players for this League but he got us playing and was influential in what could have been one of the best seasons for the Blades. 90 points, 92 goals and for me, it brought back the kind of spirit and match day experience that I hadn't seen since probably the 4th division season when we just knew we were going to score goals and win. With automatic promotion freakishly snatched away with a mixture of our main rivals going on an unbelievable run and our top striker being sent down, he then has no control over Huddersfield gifting us a golden chance only for 3/5 penalty takers to miss. As we all did, he must have looked to the FGs and ask how did that happen.

There were rumours that he offered his resignation last Summer. Whether this was down to the failure to go up or because he knew what was coming is up for debate but he had to deal with more budget cuts, losing Ched (who may have gone anyway), he loses Quinn, Lowton (probably inevitably) and Williamson which adds up to 60 odd goals and numerous assists from last season and has to replace them with the purse strings very tight.

Many will argue that his signings have been crap but again, misfortune and sales haven't helped. Would we be where we are now with Miller and Blackman up front ? It has been a major let down this season after last season but when you take a step back, it's a wonder we are where we are in the League given what's happened.

We'll never know a lot of what's happened behind the scenes, maybe Danny has lost the players but I can't help think that luck's been against him at crucial times in the 2 years he's been with us. Antonio doesn't get a 97th minute winner, a penalty scored, a different court result and things could be completely different.

Unfortunately, all the good work from last season has now been undone, subject to a totally unexpected end to this season and Danny's time with us will probably be looked at as a failure but he brought a smile back to the club for 99% of last season and had last season ended just slightly differently, who knows.

I would even hazard a guess that despite all the shit that has happened e.g. with Miller crocked for the season and the sale of Blackman etc. if Di Girolomo hadn't done his cruciate on international duty it might have made that tiny bit of difference in one of the 0-0 games at home to change the landscape completely. On such minimal factors success or failure is determined.

Having said that I think Wilson's tactics have been overly negative - and that has to be based on the fact that he simply does not trust the players ability to do something different.

On both counts - we will never know.

It's totally up to the players now. Forget any Morgan factor - it's absolutely in the hands of the players to make these next 5 games count. Are they up for it? Can they change it? We won't have that long to find out.

I'll certainly thank Danny for last season. Best football for many years. Whoever we eventually get in, please, please let us be playing decent football.

He has been negative this season compared to last but you have to look at the players he's got. Again, you could argue that he could have brought in different and better quality players but we're then back to the budget.

You can't argue with the defence this season but that's arguably come at a cost to attack but it goes back to the loss of key players, replace McMahon with Lowton, Flynn with Squinny etc etc

i think Wilson did a great job with lots of dignity.. lets face it Jose Mourinho couldn't manage this shower whilst he kept having his best players sold from under him and made to buy second rate replacements.. goodness knows why he persists with Doyle. He was a decent midfielder himself. surely he can see he's not good enough
thanks for last season Danny.. i actually looked forward to the games and i think the gods robbed us. plus for getting shot of Monty i will be eternally grateful

it's the board stupid

Yeah me too. Undoubtedly handed a steaming pile of shit by the board this season to deal with and unsurprisingly gone tits up.

No excuse for the dire negative football but last season was one of the more enjoyable of my lifetime - genuinely enjoyed watching us.

With all of that Fleety.

Turned around a desperate set of failures into playing proper football. Lost promotion in a Rhyl bedroom and then lost the team in another post play-off sell off. Hard to come back from that.

Are we going to go back to hysterical touch line bullshit? Fucking hope not.

Oh dear, oh dear. I was on a date tonight as it happened and have only just heard the news. I think this is ridiculous.

As an aside, I rather suspect Wilson has the best points per game record of any United manager ever....

People say Wilson was unlucky to lose Ched at the end of last season, but would we have even had him for all or any of last season if he didn't have the threat of going to jail hanging over him?

Your date probably went better than mine....:)

I get the feeling Morgan could go two ways:

a) Stony faced inscrutability in the face of whatever happens
b) Full on Wally Downes car-keys-in-hand-windmilling into the opposition bench.

I think an initial period of a) will be followed by a short but spectacular incidence of b).

Outside of the 2003 season, last term Danny Wilson gave the most enjoyment I've had watching Blades. This season has been bloody awful, on a par with the relegation season 2 years ago.

I dunno. My feeling is that we would have kept him. It was bandied about in the Jan 2012 windwo, but there would have been nothing to stop some struggling PL or aspriring second tier club offering him oodles of money and a long contract wityh the proviso that it would be cancelled if he went down. It may be that such offers were made and we turned them down.

We would have had him until January at the very least, as he was injured at the start of the season which, combined with him being overpaid and rubbish in the 2 years before, would have prevented a sale.

We may also have had him beyond that, given last January was the only one in living memory that we did not weaken the squad.

What i'm saying is that in an alternate universe, where Ched didn't go to the holiday inn, would we have had him for all of last season.

It would seem some on here want a hysterical touchline with some of the names mentioned

I for one feel this is a major backwards step, the quality of football last season showed the football Danny would have us playing given the chance with some decent backing. I cant think of a manager available who would play good football and more importantly want the bloody job. Good luck Danny, you had everything against you and at times came in for some serious stick but you always acted with class and dignity. I Thank you Mr Wilson

Indeed. I think some people confuse "blind panic" with passion, "referee baiting" with caring and "bullying" with motivation.
A bit of dignity in both victory and defeat never hurt anyone.

Last seasons squad was completely different to this and any manager with a modicum of ability would have got them firing and close to promotion. This season with a largely changed squad and the replacement players sadly lacking Wilson has been found out.

We have been utter garbage all season long. The odd flash of last season has been seen in a few fleeting second half minutes but on the whole we have been utterly rubbish. Somehow we have managed to find ourselves still in with a shout of promotion, mainly due to everyone else in the league being inconsistent also!

Wilsons ineptness was summed up in the fact that after changing the game at Walsall the previous Saturday he relegates Porter and McFadzean back to the bench in favour of keeping with Kitson and Robson/Flynn.....

Anyone could have managed us last season, this season when it mattered Wilson was found wanting.

So he gets no thanks from me.

Ched was a useless lump until he played under Wilson / in the third tier. Even if (in retrospect) Wilson was lucky to have him, I think that at the time many of us would have liked to see him offloaded after relegation.

His wage to performance ratio was truly dreadful until then. Alco may have mentioned that once or twice. :)

My point is that yes, as the we would probably have been able to sell him in Jan in the real universe and resisted the tempttation to do so, which suggests that McCabe was, on this occasion, willing to hang on to his prize asset to get promotion.

Danny gets a thanks from me on a personal level - after the shambles of the Mickey Adams regime it was good that we had a United manager who people genuinely warmed to. He also was able to turn Adams' shambles of a team into one of the best attacking sides I've ever seen at the Lane.

However, I've said it a couple of times this season that this is the side that Danny built and it's crap. Slow, predictable and painful to watch. Loanees and ageing players brought in on short term contracts have taken the soul out of the team while the members of what was supposedly one of the best generations of youth players were left on the bench at best.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Danny Wilson take over at Rotherham this summer if Steve Evans gets the boot. I'd wish him all the best there.

How quickly we forget! The team won four on the trot as recently as February. October was a cracking month too for victories. Didn't Wilson win Manager of the Month for one of these?.

It's the home form that has been the killer - and the lack of goals in recent weeks. The win at Tranmere was thanks to a flukey og, and Porter's goal the other week was a scrambled effort. It's been weeks since anyone scored a decent goal.

We won 5 out of 6 in October, scoring just 7 goals and yes DW won the Manager of the Month award. The perfomaces were still crap, (remember the Pompey TV game....) and the fragrance of the positive results absolutely masked the odour of the performances. The difference now is that we have been found out, (or rather Wilsons tactics have) and we can no longer grind out those 1-0 wins....

So again, no thanks from me.

Thanks Danny, you are a decent, honourable man.

Last season was great after the shambles Adams left. I saw good attacking football and 70% of the games I attended ended in wins with lots of goals.

You couldn't have influenced the Evans situation, he was to blame.

I don't know why you adopted the more cautious approach this year but it hasn't worked since Christmas.

I'm glad you've been spared what could have been very ugly in the next few weeks.

I hope you get the type of job you want next. It's harsh but as with everyone who leaves you are no use to us now and we move on hopefully successfully

We played some good stuff last season (thanks mainly to the players Wilson inherited) up until we lost Ched, at which point Wilson went unnecessarily negative - culminating in us playing for penalties in the play off final. Unfortunately this season has continued in the same negative vein - the performances at home in particular have been dreadful. Add to that some poor signings (including loans) by Wilson and I think he had to go.

Especially if you ask where we signed him from.
