I don't actually think Wilder will line up like this as I expect him to go 5 at the back but if I was in charge i'd go...

--------------Moore-------------
Freeman EEL JOC Lafferty
------------Coutts--Fleck-------
---Duffy---Caruthers---Lavery
------------------Sharp-------------

Ramsdale/Wright/Basham/Brooks/Scougall/Done/Mcnulty

Plenty of options to change the shape from the bench. Let them worry about us. What would you do?

I'd fear for the EEL and JOC pairing at CB. Both young and benefit from the influence of Wright and the general back up of operating in a back 3.

Add to that the memories of our defensive shambles against Southend at home and I'd be very concerned.

I can't see Carruthers walking straight into the team when we've been doing so well. Expect him to come on as sub.

Don't get this change of formation - 3-5-2 has got us to top of the league.

We have 5 difficult games left - Southend, Peterborough, Rochdale away with Bolton and Scunthorpe at home.

We rested players at Bury and nearly got caught - Bury had a lot of the ball in midfield.

We will play our A team.

I wasn't a fan of last weeks team sheet, but now I see why Wilder did it - he was looking ahead to this game. Agree it will be the A team with Carruthers on the bench. Would start Done ahead of Lavery. EEL needs to be all over Ranger. One goal will win this game.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I think i was just trying to pick our best 11 players and shoehorn them in to a formation, when it should be other way round.

If it aint brok.....

I agree but no way will he not play Basham.

Agree 100% Fulwood, could easily gone badly wrong at Bury but thankfully lady luck was on our side.

Ineed - if Vaughan had buried that chance at 1-1 we may have struggled. Watching the highlights, EEL got in a great situation to block and sort of forced him to slice it wide.

Credit to good defending by EEL, but Vaughan shoudl have scored - we got out of jail

I thought we would lose looking at the team as we seemed to have dismantled the main reason we have been so good this season: The midfield

In hindsight it was a great plan to bring Duffy and Coutts on for the last 20 to see us home. They got a rest and we did enough to get the points

i love how Wilder puts EEL on the wing when we're pressing, almost as good as Warnock throwing Morgan up top

First hard team selection for a while.

Difficult away game, so you'd want Wright in. But you'd also want Basham in. But you can't really play them both without dropping one of our key midfielders (probably Coutts) or changing the formation and moving players out of position.

I think one thing we should agree on is that we should stick with the 3-5-2 away from home, where it's worked perfectly.

So it probably has to be a choice between Wright or Basham in the back 3, with only one of them in the team. The other option is Basham in for Coutts in midfield. Wilder's got to decide if it's a game that should suit Coutts, or a game like Bradford away, which suits Basham. I think Southend are more technical than physical in midfield so it should be a fairly clean game, which would suit Coutts. But it's Phil Brown, so maybe not...

Another thing to consider is that Southend seem to start games well, and we finish games well. Would it be wiser and safer to start with Wright to try and keep it tight early on before kicking on for the win in the last 30 minutes or so, when we could bring Basham on? Possibly.

I'd probably edge towards starting Basham at the back, he's done well enough to be trusted I think. And he is more athletic than Wright which might be important against Ranger/Fortune. Also, I didn't like EEL at RCB against Bury.

Last week? You mean Monday?

This week's bloody dragged though hasn't it, feel like a fortnight. ;). Hate the first 'week' at work after Christmas.

Might think he deserves a rest? I've got to say I'm not Basham's biggest fan (especially in MF) but he has done well in recent games. I just hope CW doesnt try to shoe horn him into midfield at the expense of one of the 'holy trinity'. Anyway, in Wilder We Trust. UTB!!

I reckon for the first 3/4 games, barring any injuries, Carruthers will come off the bench in the second half.

he wont drop basham, he broke up a lot of play at bury ,a couple of his tackles could be heard at back of the stand .m.o.m. for me.

Would be tough to but also tough not to, Wright also played very well and doesn't deserve to be dropped, and its hard not to start Coutts in midfield. Be very interested to see the line up tomorrow.
