Team vs Liverpool

At this level, the one rick Robinson performs per game costs you a goal.

No end of long throws into the keepers arms are going to make up for that.

He lost his man against Leeds and gave Fulham every opportunity to take the points from Bramall Lane yesterday.

He doesn't overlap anywhere near enough for the role to be deemed effective. So frankly I'd rather as mentioned above simply pick the better player, which is Ampadu.

He is probably more effective than Bryan was deemed but he is a Championship squad player and it is showing. Team minutes here or there as an extra body, cup games to give others a rest. He's your man. 4 months in mid season as first choice. Sorry, but no.

Stevens plus Lowe gives the best balance but the latter will be out for a while because of the concussion protocols.

I'd be open to playing 5-4-1 against Liverpool and frustrating them but having some pace in there with Burke or Bogle as the right most midfielder.

We are struggling for points. Last thing we want is the goal difference to take a hit too.

Not against Brewster and Burke to unsettle an unfamiliar central defence after Van Dyke got injured. Though I can still see McGoldrick getting a start.

Do we know if he was withdrawn due to the concussion protocols, rather than just being unable to continue due to the knock he got? If it were the concussion protocols he’d have presumably been withdrawn when getting the initial assessment?

Robinson is alright for next season if we do indeed go down but this year nowhere near good enough at this level to be first choice. We're just going to have to gamble on Ampadu being able to cover that left side or we are doomed

Ramsdale

Egan
Stevens
Basham

Lowe (what is concussion protocol?)
Bogle

Ampadu
Norwood
Lundstrum

Berg

Brewster

Going to keep banging this drum, reading Wilders interview Bogle was close to a start but with Lowe starting he didn't want to take the chance.

Looks like Alisson is still out for our game according to this article. If we can manage a shot on target that is!

Also an article on the tactical background behind why Villa could beat Liverpool in case of interest:

Assuming Lowe is out and that we will play 3 centre backs I would go with

Ramsdale
Basham Egan Stevens
Bogle Berge Ampadu Lunny Osborne
Burke Brewster

Am I the only one unwilling to throw Brewster straight in? Don't want to destroy the kids confidence from the off so would leave him to come off the bench certainly against the better teams. One of McG or Burke otherwise it's like playing with a one man strike force.

Double post again, seriously getting pissed off with my internet now.

Ramsdale
Stevens
Ampadu
Egan
Basham
Baldock
Norwood
Berge
McGoldrick
Brewster
Burke

This is the team we've gotta pick for me, if we try and defend keep a clear sheet, the chances are we'll concede anyway. So with Allison and Van Dijk out, lets get on the front foot and see if we can take the lead rather than waiting to go behind and chasing the game late on.

My guess at Wilder's team-

......................Ramsdale
......Basham..Egan....Stevens
Bogle.......................................Osborn
.......Berge......Norwood.....Lundstram
................Burke...........McBurnie

Suspect he'll want to give Bogle a run now, he alluded to it in his post match interview.
We're going to need a running outlet against these big 3 teams so I think it's a good time to have a look at what he offers.

I don't think Wilder will have been impressed by Jack Robinson's moment of madness in that 2nd half. It was absolutely ludicrous what he did.
A bit of a reshuffle with Osborn going to LWB.

I think he'll go with the same midfield. Norwood's ping might be needed to start counter attacks, otherwise he might have gone for Ampadu.

Burke & McBurnie probably offer the best out ball we have so I think we could see them two paired at the top of the park.

No I wouldn’t either, still a kid with what half an hour of prem experience ??

Bring him on for half an hour if it’s close

Get at them FFS, their defence is shaky at present.
Enda at LCB and Osborn at LWB to give us back our attacking left flank.
Burke getting behind them, to provide cut backs for Brewster and Berge arriving from midfield.
Ampadu in CM to give us some more energy and to help stop Norwood getting bullied off the ball.

They are likely to score against us anyway, so may as well give them something to think about when we attack.

---------------------------Rammers----------------------------

---------------Basham-----Egan-------Stevens--------------

Baldock---------Norwood-------Ampadu-----------Osborn

-----------------------------Berge------------------------------

-------------Burke------------------------ Brewster-----------

Bench:
GK - couldn't care less
Robinson
Bogle
Lundstram
McG
Sharp
McBurnie

Verrips - Robinson, Ampadu, Basham - Osborn, Fleck, Rodwell, Lundstram, Bogle - Sharp, Burke
Leave out one of the best young keepers in England, who played well yesterday, and replace him with an untried 3rd choice ? I think you are playing devils advocate

I don't think Liverpool is the time to be experimenting with formations so I expect us to remain in out standard formation of 3-5-2

Ramsdale
Bogle

Cbs
Stevens
Egan
Basham

Lowe

Cms
Norwood (left m)
Ampadu (holding)
Berge (right m)

Strikers
Brewster (hopefully desperate to impress Klopp)
Burke

I do like Didz but we suffer up top when he plays due to him having to drop deep to pick up the ball. Although his link up play is good we lose out on the goal threat.

I don't care anymore if ampadu isn't left footed, he's too good for the bench and better than Robinson. Also Lundstram was quiet and ineffective again.
Yes I agree, we’ve got to start rolling the dice a bit more.
I would never imagine CW going into any game not wanting to win it. But sometimes the players go into games like this with a inferiority complex and take it upon themselves play it much too safe.
Nobody (including myself) expects us to get anything at Anfield, so it’s really all about the performance for me.
A good performance against Liverpool might just be the tonic we need.
Yes our best defender is missing, but so is Liverpool’s.
I simply don’t want us to walk out of Anfield regretting that we could have done more.

Ramsdale
Baldock/Bogle*
Basham
Egan
Stevens/J-Robs*
Lowe/Stevens*
Berge
Ampadu
Lundstram
Burke
Brewster

*Lowe fitness dependent. I wouldn’t play both him and Bogle together given the other newbies in the lineup above and the need to have some familiarity in the lineup.

Posted on the 'Berge as a 10' thread. Why not?

-------------------Ramsdale
----------Basham----Egan---Stevens
Baldock-------------------------------Lowe
--------------------Ampadu
-----------Lundstram-----Osborn
----------------------Berge
--------------------Brewster

Suppose you can keep Ramsdale in, but with bunches of players getting injured all over the place and a ridiculous run of games, going mass rotation away to the champions of everything would be my play

Yeah your version might be better, I'm guessing you'd go;

.........................Ramsdale..
............Basham....Egan....Ampadu
Bogle...............................................Stevens
...........Berge.....Norwood.......Osborn
..................McBurnie....Burke

I actually think this team might be better. Same principle, slightly better balance.

Brewster looks like he's going to need a run of cameos to me. Looked off the pace yesterday, little too reactive.

If we're going to have any chance of scoring we'll need 2 strikers on the pitch ergo playing Berge as a 10 instead of a striker is a non starter for me.
McBurnie is off form so start him on the bench with Brewster getting up to speed use him from the bench until we have this run of tough games out of the way.
Up front to start it's 2 from McG, Burke, Sharp unless Mousset suddenly returns.

Bogle was close to getting a debut against Fulham and was still deemed too much of a risk, no way Wilder is throwing him in against the champions. 12 mins of game time from Lowe isn't going to change Wilder's thinking.

I'd expect to see the following...

Rammers
Baldock - Bash - Egan - Ampadu - Stevens
Berge - Norwood - Lunny
Burke - McGoldrick

There's enough tried and tested in there which is Wilder's preferred MO. He also showed last season he likes a pacey outlet for the counter against these big teams away. Without Moose it has to be Burke. And for a pacey outlet you need someone to release them so Norwood keeps his place. Didzy to help link the midfield to attack. And Lunny probably showed enough first half against Fulham to keep his starting place.
