What do we want Danny Wilson to do?

Without Collins and Maguire we lack a bit height while Doncaster have the biggest centre halves in the league, will defensive set pieces be a worry?

McMahon will slot in at centre half I would imagine. Harry should have known better - getting booked at Donny and missing Oxford would have been far more sensible.
I fear for the next few weeks now though - our dire spell in March/April last season coincided with the centre half pairing getting split up. Oh how we could do with Captain Morgs right now....

He wouldn't have by being booked at Donny because it goes to 10 bookings now. He was so stupid that I wouldn't be that bothered if we sold him. I think he is vastly overrated

Harry's booking was ridiculous. Should've had a penalty, but we were 1-3 down in 90th minute, his mind should've been on getting a goal not arguing with opposition players. He knows too well that we need him now more because Collins is out.

I fear for George Long getting peppered for 90 minutes with a back four of westlake-McMahon-Hill-Williams. Possibly one of the worst back fours of my lifetime!

Hopefully we can get a centre half on-loan tomorrow morning. I'm sure there are plenty of free agents we could snap up just for a month.
Who knows what DW's got in mind, but i do fear the worst in relying on Westlake, McMahon, Hill and Williams.

we need a centrehalf and another striker in for tommorow.
i fear for us if we dont replace our missing players.

If he had avoided a booking, the amnesty passed for 5 bookings yesterday. So silly silly thing to do really.

It's not so much the team for Doncaster that we need to debate, it's the defence...!

I'm fed up of us playing experienced pros out of position at the expense of the academy products. Terry Kennedy is sufficiently rated by Morgan that he's captaining the reserve side. He's also a centre half by trade: he has to start tomorrow. If McMahon is going to play centre half then Hill should be at left back.

Personally, I'd go Williams - Hill - Kennedy - McMahon but that might leave us a bit short, literally. The onus would be on McDonald and Kitson to pick up their centre backs at set pieces: definitely not McDonald's strength but he's 6'2".

Paynter and Brown to think about as well. Maybe play Cresswell on left side of midfield to get another marker in?

I think it would be an extremely long shot to expect LJF back for Donny. The pitches are just too dodgy to risk it. Plus as Donny play on a partly plastic pitch it'd be a bigger risk.

I suggest we play the development team back four, at least they've played together before!

I wouldn't say so. He's not made the bench yet I don't think so to put him in would be a huge gamble as he would be well off the pace. Plus - at centre half?? Really? Do people seem to forget the defensive likeness of him and Nyron?

Aye I knows, in a perfect world etc.... but we are a million miles from that at present.
Westlake was woeful on Sat-di, but he will prob play.
McMahon "should" do a job at CH, I seem to recall some Boro fans saying that was his preferred position (even at ~5'9"?!).
Whichever way you look at it - there's probably going to be a lack of height across the back four with the present team.........

Surely we've got to be giving Terry Kennedy a chance? He's a decent player and a good prospect!

got to agree with this...Cotterill can play either wing and we will need full backs who will mark. For all his poor distribution,Williams isn't the worst defender and I think he and McMahon should play in their normal positions. Which leaves a relatively short centre half partnership of Hill and Kennedy...too risky ?

One alternative is to play a back 5 with McMahon as a third centre half with Westlake and Williams as wing backs. However, this would be a big risk as they haven't played this before .However I have a feeling we may go with 5 in midfield with McAllister in for Cofe and Cresswell up front on his own( if Kitson not fit enough) leaving Blackman and Flynn wide to try and support.

For once,I would be happy with a 0-0 ultra defensive performance (similar to how Donny played at BDTBL)

Williams isn't the worst defender

So who is then? I've not seen every game this season, but I've not seen him have a single decent game defensively. I'd rather play Flynn at fullback, at least he can get goal side of his man

I also presume that KMac will sit out the Donny game... Activating his 'big game' clause where he is either suspended or picks up a mystery one game injury...

A clean sheet is the last thing I'm expecting with the type of back 4 being mentioned. An ultra-defensive line-up is likely to really restrict the number of opportunities we create. Even with our first choice back 4 available I'd say that's ill-advised, given the potential for the defence to be undone on one occasion. With the back 4 we'll play, that would be suicidal.

The best way of relieving the pressure on our threadbare defence is to take the game to Donny and be positive in their half. It's that simple.

You can't play with a back four full of midgets! Cresswell has to start at centre-back.

I see Cotterill has emerged as a world-beater again, following his mysterious disapperance immediately after the warm-up at Wembley.

He'll be back on some team's bench within a year.

...

Preston away and Stevenage at home immediately spring to mind. When he has played away from home,I don't think I can recall him having a poor game this season(I am sure someone will correct me) although I agree he has been inffective sometimes at home.

He is now the new scapegoat after the mantle was passed to him from Hill which means that Williams will get slated for an average performance when other players have performed far worse than him (e.g. on Saturday-Westlake,Maguire.Cofe,)He is awful at passing and crossing....however defensively he is better than LJF who appears to be becoming some mythical superstar in his abscence (despite his Nyron tendancies).

It is rare than Williams gets beaten round the outside by a winger and he is a good tackler. However his tendancy not to clear the ball well or make the simple pass means he should only be back up at this level (as should Westlake be for McMahon)

.

He was seen by some on here as a world beater before we played them earlier this season but he had a poor match as he was marked out of the game. He even swpaaed wings but still got nothing

bartman I'm not scapegoating Williams, I've said that Hill was also awful, as was Westlake, I just picked up on your comment that he wasn't the worst defender.

I'm glad you've seen a good game from Williams, it does give some hope, but I've not seen anything from him defensively. Going forward he's looked slightly better, but defensively he just doesn't seem to have a clue.

I like your point that he doesn't get beaten down the outside... It puzzles me then how he always shows the wingers inside (when he's on his weaker foot). I'd rather a defender shows the winger onto his weaker foot, rather than just show him the more direct and dangerous route.

Hartlepool defenders kept showing Blackman inside on Saturday and he got a lot of luck this way, fortunately for them they could force him into the middle and a shot from range (do they know that he doesn't look for a pass in these positions or did they get lucky).

My main gripe is that our fullbacks don't show the wingers onto their weaker foot

An alternative may be Kitson and Ironside up front, although from an attacking perspective, with their two centre halves we should be playing quicker strikers.

Not confident about this and would be happy with a point. A suggestion:

Long
Westlake McMahon Kennedy Hill
Blackman McAllister Doyle McDonald Flynn
Kitson
It's going to look patched up anyway, but hopefully McMahon, Kennedy, Hill and Kitson will be good enough in the air to mark tall opponents. McAllister to come in and graft, enable Blackman to go forward more and help out Westlake. It may actually be an idea to use Flynn on the right for his defensive qualities, whereas Hill should be able to hold his own more on the left.

Or Quinn? Or Monty?

BTW Bergen. Bumped into three Norwegians (from Bergen) in The Plough, Sandygate Road yesterday. Never thought to ask. You wasn't one of them, were you?

Nope. There are a lot of groundhoppers from Norway travelling around England at all times though. Could even be pig fans!

As was manifestly demonstrated on Saturday, you can be as good as you like in the air, but if the other fellow is decent as well and 6 inches taller, you haven't a prayer! Height is imperative, I'm afraid. The days of Joe Shaw are long gone.

Could you have a crafty word with Ryan Shawcross about a month's loan?
