Sydie has had a tough gig, really. I like him, he's the one prospect who's trajectory and development I really want to handle carefully, because there's clearly a player in there.
But here's why I feel for him. Last season, he was chucked in at the deep end after the loss of Arblaster. We had woeful depth in central mid and whilst he had the impressive Souza alongside him for the most part, he was asked to do a LOT of minutes, far more than you would ideally cover in your introduction to mens professional football.
This season, Jairo aside, he has had an awful range of CM partners - in terms of consistency of selection and consistency of form. All have been a drop off from Souza and he has been extremely exposed. Again, far more than he should be, so early into his professional career.
In any other circumstances we would've been able to manage his minutes better, and give him time to grow into his role. I still think he needs to establish what type of midfielder he wants to be - but it's like he's had to put that to one side as a nicety, to work on later - and to just get on with slogging the hard yards and extensive minutes so far.
