Why drop Long?
Have people forgot some of the amazing saves George has produced so far that Dimmo could only have dreamed of?
Defending starts from the front, drop some of them dopes.
Look at the under strength backpass header by darling Maguire in the first ten minutes that nearly put us behind!
The other question is why not let Howard retain the starting place? Howard never did anything like Long stupidly did today so it would be better to give it back to Howard when he's back!

I disagree about taking the piss but George is a professional goalkeeper! He should have known to have atleast cleared it or to have actually made an attempt to get the ball away instead of standing still letting Madden easily tackle him!

The trouble with being a goalie is one mistake and it really hurts. Any other position gets away with it. George has got us out of trouble many times since he's come in. Cut him a bit of slack folks.

Maybe if the fucking squad were coached properly in the first place, we wouldn't be having this discussion and Long wouldn't be in the firing line so much.

He has been excellent for the vast majority of the games he has played this season. As the moaners when we have been winning will highlight, we've 'been lucky' to win due to often having to call on Long to pull off a crucial save or two. Plenty up till this point have been worried we'll cash in on him this January. One bad mistake, and plenty are calling for him to be dropped. Remarkable.

Why would we want to drop Long anyway? He's still gaining experience at this level and who would we replace him with? Is Howard even back from injury yet? All the chances we gave Simmo and Long makes one mistake and people think he should be dropped. It is remarkable Loughboro.

Jehovah, with respect you say the same thing about Long everyday. The thing is, Long is the only option right now so how does it help. People should be picking this guy up and encouraging him.

I thought Doyle should have gone back and had a word with him too, so that tells me all I need to know about our captain.

I know mate, I'm boring myself. The reason I make issue is that numerous fans don't accept there is a problem and that long is the answer (see lee camp rumour thread for e.g.)

Also, Doyle, like the rest of the lads was probably just pissed off his totally needless balls up ended our hope of a comeback.

I'm watching match of the day and with all this talk of dropping long ,spurs v qpr has just finished and it got me thinking of the 2 kyles. After they went to spurs walker was on loan at villa, and naughton spent a season on loan at norwich, its taken them 3 years for both of them to become regulars for spurs. But we want to drop an18 year old kid after twenty games this boy is 1 year older than my son. Lets cut the guy some slack and watch him develop into our nu1 keeper. Not moaning when he's between the sticks somewhere else. Patience is a virtue. UTB.

Yes, allow him to develop in a crucial season where we are desperate for promotion. If he makes clangers that cost us games, its all for the greater good as we will be helping an 18 year old learn his trade, this is the priority of Sheffield United.

Sorry for all the sarcasm but come on. We neeed an experienced keeper in urgently.

Contrast to at Donny when we sung his name even after he conceded the penalty… I don't get what goes through your head to sarcastically jeer your own player…

At Donny he dragged down their player and in my eyes he got away with a red card offence, and that would have been game over there and then, and we would have ended up on the wrong end of a thumping

I had a dig at those around me who sarcastically cheered Long. Some abuse in the immediate aftermath of the goal I can sort of understand (but wouldn't condone or join in) but obnoxious sarcasm does nobody any good.

Not replying to this particular post directly but, I believe Long has gained points that Simmo would have lost. It's unfortunate that the lot of them today seemed off the pace.We can't turn bacvk thed clock.Llighten up, George knows what he did. get behind the lads for the next game
A keeper with twice George's experience could have done the same thing. it's the nature of the game. I believe that if a playerf is good enough, he is old enough to play. Would any one bring back Simmo in Georges place?

There was a time when a United keeper on dropping a bollock would have his name sung by the kop to put a bit of confidence back in him. Alan Kelly made the biggest fook up of all time in a big big game I don't remember anyone jeering him.

The pass back to George should never have happened in the first place. See nobody has slagged Harry big time for being Shit all game

We did not lose this game because of George Long, we didn't have a shot on target before or after the mistake. The team should take full responsibility for the shit they have served up this year

Is it just coincidence or has Harry's head been elsewhere since the new year ?

Long makes one mistake and people think he should be dropped. .

He has made mistakes which have cost us goals against Hartlepool,Doncaster and now yesterday. The kid looks like he will be a good keeper but now might be the time to think about 'resting' him for a few games to take him out of the firing line.

However,my main concern is the form of Maguire...has he had more than one good game since Preston away ?

I think you need to learn some rules if you think he should have been sent off. There were 2 players behind George and the attacker had kicked the ball a mile in front of him.

Of course let's not discuss how the striker was clean through in the fucking first place!

Good point, but how do you gain that experience, by being put in a team and cocking up, simmo was ? A more experienced keeper than we have at the moment. I'm not advacating that he can cock up every game without being dropped, because again thats how he would learn . Because collectively at the moment the team is playing shit , and everyone as blades fan knows it, just with age i'd be willing to cut the guy a bit of slack, and in the long run it'll make him a better man playing for us.UTB.

The team looks elsewhere since December. Doyle is crap and McDonald is ineffective. It's just not good enough but as fans instead of looking at the big picture all we want to do is pick on individual mistakes.

Where from? The requests for new replacement players always make me wonder where these mysterious players are to be found? They're not just sat at home waiting for Sheffield United to ring up and offer them a place in the side. And don't forget that the good ones cost money, which we apparently haven't got.

I'm all for getting better players than we have, but how do we get them? We can't just shout "more experienced player needed" and have the required man roll up, boots on and ready.

We could do with replacing the entire squad to be fair, but until Premier League players get all philanthropic and want to play for nowt then we will have to carry on as we are, stumbling around the shit league until we manage promotion, which at the moment looks a long way off. Do I like it? No, of course not. Do I want change? Damn right. Do I think it will happen quickly? No. No, I certainly don't.

I am glad I don't work for you. God help me if I made a mistake that you wouldn't come to me if I made a mistake. Whether he was pissed off or not go and give your keeper a chat.

Long is the long term answer but until Howard comes back there is no other option and considering this is the first major mistake he has made I am not going to hang him out to dry, especially when experienced pro's did alot worse than him yesterday but just not in that area of the pitch.

I thijnk you should put your witch hunt against him to one side

i've said this for some time but our fans are becoming a liability. we never play well kicking from the kop end. it's understandable because the fans have put up with so much, but when you consider that we were once considered in the same breath as the stoke fans then it is a bit sad
as for longy, he's a young player and will make a few howlers.. the difference between him and simmo is that simmo was a seasoned pro with premiership experience and long is in his first proper season.. the pass to him was a hospital ball anyway and he simply didn't want to pass to Williams and i can't say i blame him

I was wondering how long it would be until Williams was at fault for the second. That's some top work.

i didn't say he was a fault..
oh i see.. it was an obtuse reference to scapegoats. my opinion on scapegoats is simple. the fans will always pick out the player who they consider is letting the team down.. the fact it is the same player every week reflects on the performances of the player not the fans..
williams has a simple solution. fucking improve and stop kicking the ball anywhere, then he will soon desist from being the 'scapegoat'.. john gannon principle

Can't understand the sarcasm directed at Long afterwards when it was Williams that put him under pressure anyway, jeer that daft specimen by all means.

I think it was actually Higinbotham. And saying that, he didnt put him under pressure, he could have cleared it first time instead he tried being clever. He only needs to watch the replay to learn from his mistakes, which he will. Doesn't need some half wits cheering him.. Probably the same half wit that was in my seat.. My seat I sit in every week then when asked to move smugly shows his ticket as proof... "This is JJ mate, not J. Fuck off down stairs"

1. Work for me? you mean work for Doyle etc as it was them who did not go over to him, not me. I never said they should or should not have consoled him. I just offered an explanation as to why, perhaps, they did not.
2. I am well aware there is no other option at present, which is why I keep saying we need to sign another keeper.
3. Thank you for your suggestion of putting my "witch hunt" to one side. It is noted.

Fair points. The main problem for me is that there seems to be a large majority of fans who do not see a problem with Long. I can only assume these people do not watch corners, crosses etc
As far as signing a replacement, I can not believe there is not a single more experienced player available in that position we could not get in.

He is not just costing us games with obvious clangers. He is so weak at coming for crosses, commandng his box, needless punches etc. Some fans re obviously not watching him closely enough. The first corner against Hartlepool was his fault for leaving Williams stranded with no idea where he was. Not many would notice this, but it lead to the goal. These veiled mistakes are more so the reason we need a new lad in than because he drops the occasional ridiculous bollock.

Everybody wants a team full of homegrown talent. As fans theres nothing better than seeing young lads doing well that have come through the ranks. If we are going to expect that then we are also going to have to learn that with it comes mistakes, inconsistancy and poor performances amongst the good stuff and obvoius talent.

As fans we have little control over on pitch affairs but what Long needed more than anything else yesterday was 20,000 arms around his shoulder. If we demand creative and expressive football then we as fans must empower our players to be able to play without the fear that theyll be ripped to shreds everytime they drop a bollock.

Tickler, were you in and around A block in the South Stand yesterday? Rodders pointed you out, but I said no, he couldn't possibly be that fat.
