Swinging like the wind & mocking Long

Long needs a spell on the sidelines. We gotta remember his age and protect him a bit. Wilson didn't have any qualms about dropping him last yr

My point isn't that he can't take it and he should be protected at all, it's that we gain absolutely nothing positive by doing it.

What is it? Character building? Bollocks. The lad knows he's just dropped a bollock, he doesn't need sarcastic jeering when he does something correctly. It does nothing but dent the confidence of a player in a position that requires confidence and make us look like tools.

Contrast to at Donny when we sung his name even after he conceded the penalty… I don't get what goes through your head to sarcastically jeer your own player…

Can't understand the sarcasm directed at Long afterwards when it was Williams that put him under pressure anyway, jeer that daft specimen by all means.

You could just as easily blame Maguire for that crime, but he's less of a scapegoat ;)

Why drop Long?
Have people forgot some of the amazing saves George has produced so far that Dimmo could only have dreamed of?
Defending starts from the front, drop some of them dopes.
Look at the under strength backpass header by darling Maguire in the first ten minutes that nearly put us behind!

Because he's not good enough. He doesn't command his box and panics to much. Constantly punching at Crosses when he could easily catch them.

I had a dig at those around me who sarcastically cheered Long. Some abuse in the immediate aftermath of the goal I can sort of understand (but wouldn't condone or join in) but obnoxious sarcasm does nobody any good.

It's the way footballs going. It'll be the same nobheads on here complaining when he jumps at the next premiership/championship.

I bet Danny is definitely going to give Diego a go now. Oh and I bet Diego is pleased he signed up here and didn't listen to the overtures from Man City et al.

Fucking cretins sarcastically cheering.

I wasnt at the game, but it sounds like it was a very 'British' reaction. I'm 28, and incredibly jealous of these lads who are 10 years younger than me and are playing for the greatest football team in the entire world- something I never got even remotely close to and never will.

We all know us Blades are a very (read: embarrassingly) fickle bunch- combine that with bitterness and jealousy, and I honestly believe some fans (of all ages) actually delight in the young'uns making mistakes so that they can feel superior and less-shit about their own depressing existence as they jeer and knock the confidence of someone who is inevitably going to end up much wealthier and successful than themselves. These people are miserable and are looking to take any sort of 'win' that they can out of these situations. Very sad.

George is still learning his trade. If he was with a Premiership club he'd be loaned to League 1 as it's the perfect league to gain the necessary experience. Every player makes mistakes, and we all know goalkeepers' mistakes are magnified a million times. If the midfield and defence did their jobs correctly George wouldn't be put in these situations, and if the strikers did their jobs then these mistakes wouldn't matter so much.

Far too sensible a post! :)

Complete and utter nonsense. Not a single fan took delight in Long making (another) mistake. And you say the fans jeer "so they can feel less shit about their own depressing existence" Eh?! Bonkers. And I doubt any of us are jealous that the players earn more than us. What we want is a team that shows some pride playing for the club we love. The odd bit of quality would be nice too. We have many of the highest paid players in the Division. They need to start earning those wages. To be outfought at home by Hartlepool and Yeovil is a joke. Perhaps if you'd gone to the match you'd understand and wouldn't feel the need to make stuff up.

I don't get the sarcastic shite that fans dish out to their own young and upcoming players but equally I don't get the comments from people calling their own fans nobheads (and spelling it without a k into the bargain). We are all passionate and while you may not agree with it, there are clearly more deep lying issues within the club. 2 home defeats don't actually tell the whole story. We have been poor at home most of the season. Surely anyone with half a brain in their head sees that.

The reaction is a build up of frustration. As a paying customer you have the right to voice your opinion so long as it isn't racist or overly abusive. Sorry but while I agree its counter productive it isn't without good reason fans are getting pissed off. We have put up with grade one shite for the best part of my 40 years as a Blade interspersed with am occasional break in the clouds. I'm afraid right now people are entitled to be pissed off after the crap that's been dished up the past few years. I mean who ever thought 5 years or so ago we would be getting humped at home by Yeovil?

As for our fans being fickle. We are no different to any other fans. Serve up crap and we don't like it. Solution? Stop serving up crap.

The lad is 18 for fucksake , its now he needs our support, or will people be on here and other sites bemoaning our lack of ambition by selling the youngsters can't wait till diago misses a sitter and people jeered slew when he fucked off.The team need a kick up the arse , for playing shite . Will it be mcabes fault if long and mags are sold in the JTW after todays loyal support. If our team played like people on here think they should we'd be supporting barca and not sheff u. On days like today its hard being a blade, but today as always UTB.

I'm not talking about all the players that aren't trying hard enough, I'm talking about George Long and the pathetic attempts to get at his confidence

I think the problem goes much deeper than what is being said Foxy.
The game sounded poor on B/P and we have to go back some way to understand the problems.
It does no good to jeer when some one makes a mistake.
Just look at the players who have left the club in the last few years.(sold)
Having been going for some 65 years we have always been a selling club.
In the current financial football climate there is no way that we can succeed unless some major investments are made.
As we have probably the most committed fans in the country I can full understand the frustrations as we are always living in hope and being promised jam tomorrow but tomorrow never arrives.
There is some major problem in playing at home, the buck stops on the managers desk, whoever he is but somehow the players have to perform to the same level that they talk on B/P.
Blades fans have had to put up with a lot over the seasons but they will always support hard working dedicated players who give everything for the cause.
Is it a vicious circle that due to the barracking they are frightened to make mistakes at home, or is it that we have to thin a squad. On paper we are as good as any other side in the division but we do have a major problem as the Lane as been a fortress for many seasons.
If we do not out of this division this season we are in this league for a long time.
It concerns me when our manager resorts to blaming the quality of the pitch as it is the same for both sides.
Perhaps we need a new captain or more direction from the management team or is it that we are just not good enough.
Very disappointed and frustrated Blade.
UTB

I suppose that Wilson has to blame something else other than himself; it is his fault that some of our players show no passion and don't try. It is his fault that our substitutions have no impact. Another point, I do think we need a new captain; Doyle does not lead by example and his lack of passion is quite shocking for a club captain.

so what if he gets a couple of sarcastic jeers, he dropped a clanger today. hes a pro footballer so hes going to have to deal with ups and downs ,i hope wilson sticks with him because playing is the only way he will improve. i think the crowd have been more than patient considering the crap on show in alot of home games. if Long is going to be a top keeper for us then he will learn from his mistakes if not he doesnt.

Whatever you say about Long, he didn;t cost us the game today because we didn't have a shot on goal before or after it happened. Anyone who mocked the lad is a coward and probably wouldn't do it to his face anyway

I am totally against mocking Long and the fans that booed, jeered took the piss etc. However, I maintain he is not ready to be a first teamer yet. I would heap more praise on the defence that protected him for so long than himself. Now that defence has been dismantled he is more exposed and his weaknesses are once again evident.

He's old enough, he plays pro football. Cannot believe that a few boos at a player creates such a fuss on day we found out what our beloved club had become - a joke in the pub league

Jehovah, with respect you say the same thing about Long everyday. The thing is, Long is the only option right now so how does it help. People should be picking this guy up and encouraging him.

I thought Doyle should have gone back and had a word with him too, so that tells me all I need to know about our captain.

I'm happy for Long to stay in the side and continue to develop. We have two very young, very good keepers if one doesn't play then there is a big chance that you'd lose both as they'll never feel they will get their chance.

Anyone who boo'd him today is a cunt, plain and simple there is absolutely no excuse for it especially given the fact that most fans want to see youngsters coming through.
If you are developing young players in the first team, you get mistakes. The benefit is that the more they play, the fewer mistakes they should make. Looking at Long this season compared to last (when he wasn't ready) you can already see he's come along way.

I hope Santa brought you plenty of hairbands for Christmas to keep your bollocks out of your eyes.
:fattwat:

To start a thread with that title is surprising given the absolute drivel and total lack of effort displayed by the team today. As for Long, he has been poor recently. He's let a few soft goals in and his kicking is abysmal - he was fortunate today before he totally messed up when he took his eye off the ball but fortunately it bounced up and hit his thigh. The jeers can't be nice but franky Long & the rest of the team need to man up, compete & start showing some steel and desire.

Who is Franky Long??

Seriously though, people need to get off his back. Everyone knows that if a keeper drops a bollock it results in a goal, I'm betting that several other players made far more mistakes today than Long but didn't get any crap from the crowd.

Thanks for the reminder. I made a mental note to comment on how little support he got from his team mates at the time but beer made me forget.
