When did we last do a swap deal.

I remember John Tudor to Newcastle with David Ford and possibly another in swap. Not common anymore, but in the old days swapdeals probably common due to less money. Other swaps remembered?

We swapped Martin Kuhl for someone in 80s and we swapped someone for Peter Ndlove didn't we

Peter Hetherston and Tony Agana from Watford in exchange for Martin Kuhl. Think we also got something like £40k coming our way too which came in handy when buying Brian Deane in the following pre season for £30k (or Ian Bryson from Kilmarnock for £40k). All in all, wasn't a bad old swap that.

Roger Hansbury the keeper coming our way from Birmingham, with Peter Withe going the opposite way. Both loans. Hansbury was a really pretty good but I seem to remember he broke his leg playing for us and wasnt seen playing for us again. Withe came back and picked up where he had left of being shit for us (though be did manage to rock up at the Lane playing for Brum in a midweek match whilst still our player and score both goals for them in their 2-0 win at the Lane). Only United could allow their own player to go out on loan and then watch him come back and beat us and score the winning goals against us (his only 2 goals that he ever scored for Brum). How we chuckled when Peter Fuckin Withe wheeled away in celebration in front of the Brum fans. He wasn't too well received when he came back for a while.

Didn't we originally sign Martin Kuhl in a swap deal with Steve Wigley in summer 1987?

We swapped Maguire, Walker and Naughton for some petty cash
Wasn’t the Naughton and Walker a combined £10m from Spurs? Maguire went for approx £3m to Hull. Not terrible business for a club in the financial shit. However, the lack of any meaningful sell on clauses for Walker and Maguire is criminal.

I'm sure at least one of Withe's goals was in front of the Kop. I remember him leaning forward into his clenched fists.

Yes that's right. Think we got the better of that deal as Kuhl was solid and no nonsense (was the captain of the team too) whilst Wiggles flattered to deceive for us (though he did score that goal for us v Blackburn when he beat most of their team on a mazy run). He could be brilliant on his day but was usually missing in action. Kuhl was alright and usually put a shift in and ended up going when Bassett came in and he was used to give Harry some wiggle room in the transfer market.

I can't remember it exactly, but I do recall him going s bit over the top with his celebrations after scoring for them which was a kick in the bollocks for the fans and the club. I think Reg Brearley did his nut at Billy McEwan for allowing Withe to play on loan against us. No issue with PW being professional and doing his job if he was allowed to play (the clubs fault but normally he was really crap) but ther was no need for the rubber faced bastard to rub it in celebrating with real glee at our misfortune. Always thought he was a total twat after that and couldn't wait to see the back of him. Bassett soon moved him on.

Supposed to have got around 5 million when Walker went to Man City

Just adds complexity to deals - if only a single part of the deal is unable to be agreed or fails, the whole lot is likely to fall through. Imagine having to deal with multiple players, agents and clubs and achieve alignment/agreement.

Thst said, the Robinson / Burke deal must have been relatively easy given their respective parent clubs wanted rid asap and were willing to take anything for their player - perhaps where bibbity bobbity boo's magic beams came from.

Would anyone swap Berge to a top six club in exchange for a baller at the end of his shelf life?

I’m thinking of someone in the Ray Wilkins, baller last transfer situation. Stuart McAll turned out to be good value for us.

No need for a silly sell on clause for Berge either. :)
