Blackie on double signing
Kevin Blackwell has revealed that he is delighted to snap up Greg Halford and that Sun Jihai comes highly recommended by Stuart Pearce.
The Blades boss was speaking on Wednesday after securing a two-year contract for former Manchester City utility man Sun Jihai and Sunderland defender Halford, who has agreed a one-year loan deal at Bramall Lane.
The duo are Blackwell's first signings of the summer and go straight into the pre-season plans. Halford will meet his new team-mates on Thursday, whilst Sun Jihai is currently away on international duty with China.
Of Halford's signing, Blackwell said: "I've known about Greg for a long-time. When we found out that we could get him I had no hesitation. He's a terrific athlete, gets up and down the pitch, is dangerous at set-plays and his long throws are a great weapon - all much needed attributes.
"Sheffield United is a big name and I didn't have to sell the club to him. He did exceptionally well at Charlton last season and is desperate to play first-team football. Greg can play anywhere on the right and has the ability to play central midfield. We needed cover at right-back and he will push Del Geary.
"I see him as a crowd pleaser. Fans at the Lane expect certain things, like endeavour and enthusiasm and he has that. He can defend - Charlton didn't concede too many towards the end of the season - and he is a threat in and around the opposition penalty area."
Blackwell is also enthused about the signing of experienced Chinese international, Sun Jihai, especially after a chat with former City boss, Stuart Pearce, last month.
United's manager adds: "It was when I was out in Trinidad that I spoke to Stuart and he said that if he was in charge of a Championship team, he would be in for Sun. We've also spoken to Derek Fazackerley, and he regards him highly.
"Sun will be joining us next week - he is a player who can play anywhere down the right and at left-back, he also has the ability to sit in midfield. We are pretty young in certain areas, and I think the club will benefit with a bit of knowledge in tough situations and when under pressure.
"He's been at Manchester City a few years and knows the English game, he's also played for China for the last ten years."
