I fear that a 3-1 home victory against Tranmere has somewhat raised many fans' hopes above a level of realistic expectation. There is not a prayer we will make the play offs this year, and the sooner some of the more over-optimistic fans realise this the better. I hope for Clough's sake expectations do not become inflated, as I think he is doing a fantastic job in getting us out of the s***.

This season is about surviving and building for the future. Promotion was long gone by about mid-October. Keep it up Cloughy and keep us in this god-awful division!

UTB

3/4 players in JTW and show improvement.
3/4 more players in the summer and go for it.

Anything more than that is a bonus. All thoughts of relegation have left my head.

stranger things have happened ,
its a smaller probability than a possibility that we could still eak say 50 points and snatch 6th place and sneak in via the back door
but its not an impossibility, just an improbability

but surely footballs never been just ordinary
at times the impossible becomes reality

when we beat west ham 3-0 and their last game was man utd away it was impossible they climb away , wasnt it
piggies had to win every one of their games under jones to over take us , impossible wasnt it
On 21 December 2003, Dowie was appointed manager of Crystal Palace, inheriting a squad with low morale and occupying 19th place in Division One. However, under his leadership, the club went on an impressive run that included 17 wins from 23 games after he took over, until the end of the season, enabling the club to finish in sixth place in the First Division, just scraping into the play-off places. The impossible made possible

Just wait until the football gods read that, they will have a field day!

Did Bournemouth climb from a relegation spot to an automatic promotion last year?
It's a very long shot but possible, especially if young Nigel is financially backed as promised this January transfer window. George and HRH need to back up their rhetoric about their ambitions for the club. A couple of quality signings might just be enough

We have 23 games left and we need 50 points from those games to stand any realistic chance.

I cant see it personally, but i wouldn't say it's impossible.

football is about dreams , dont see why all ours should be based on nightmares

lets get some funny weeds and start dreaming a bit

Bournemouth were 21st on 6th October with 8 points but by the 29th December were 5th with 41 points.

Success for me is getting back to winning football matches consistently. That's my only hope for this season and Clough seems to be starting to make that happen.

In terms of a realistic league position, I am hoping we can keep improving and finish in the top half. More specifically somewhere between 8th - 12th would be a good achievement after that start we had.

Agreed. Clough is a great appointment so far. I have a reasonable amount of faith in the guy. We need to get back to managerial stability. I am pleased with the progress since his arrival.

I reckon to turn this season into a success we must yet;
  • Streamline the team of all players who aren't getting near the matchday squad. In particular the focus on this should be preparing to allow a decent intake of players in the summer, therefore getting rid of all but the main squad and rotation players.
  • Adding one or two strengthening players (be it permanent or loan) in January to help us build towards the summer.
  • Maintaining our newly found "Hard to beat" style from here on in, leading to a decent salvage of a midtable finish, and being well clear of this relegation battle.

From what Cloughy has shown us so far I fully trust him to do this. I just hope we back him properly in the JTW and in summer to let him build his own team for next season.

I did not mean to increase the expectation levels unnecessarily, but I don't see the point in being overly pessimistic either. It might be better motivation for the players if they think that they have a chance of promotion rather than getting survival and mid-table mediocrity as a target in their minds, partivularly if we are trying to attract new (better) players to the club.

Well at the moment under Clough we're averaging 1.6pts/game which would give us 60 points at the end of the season. At that rate we should comfortably escape relegation. But it's a big ask to continue. We need at least a point at Walsall on Wednesday.

I think before the Oldham game many on here were predicting a white wash. I too predicted a win, but suggested caution. We are Sheffield United after all and we have a great habit of making a real mess of things. I think we'll be safe from relegation with time to spare but it doesn't mean it'll be a easy few months ahead.

A couple of signings in the JTW would be great, but repeating what others have said, it's about streamlining the current squad. I don't want HRH to be splashing the cash too much, but instead buy the players that Clough wants and needs to get us promoted next season. Those players may come on a free from this division.

Anything above the bottom four with a decent looking team.

History is littered with teams who have struggled badly, picked up and everybody thought ah ok well relegation isnt a possibility now, then gone down. It only takes a couple of defeats, confidence drops then panic sets it. Anybody thinking play offs is a bit mental. 13 points off the play offs, 3 off relegation. As the Americans would say, do the math!

After the mournful start under Weir anything above the bottom four is success this season, anyone taking about the play offs is delusional, we have picked up a few decent results and points recently but if you look at the fixtures coming up then there are a few tricky looking games.

(March looks particularly difficult.)

The sort of run required to make the play offs is probably beyond this squad, and I don't think we will see more than a couple of players coming in in January.

I reckon we may finish between 10th and 15th.

I thought we'd get 61pts so the failure against Oldham has set us back, come on Nige get thi finger pulled out.

I don't want to see wholesale changes in January, as it may disrupt a team which is performing better than needed to escape relegation . We just need to be ensuring we have enough strength in depth to cover injuries or suspensions.

Yeah I ballsed the calculation up! The post should have said 62 points not 60. I thought we had 23 points but thankfully its 25 so plus another 37 gives us 62.

We will know when this team has turned the corner, the fans will be turning up to games talking about how many we will win by rather than the current thoughts of can we get a point or cling on to a win.

Success for me is being in the habit of not losing. If we keep doing as we are we won't be far off this season. I reckon we'll miss out by 4-5 points but next year be comfortably in the top 6 challenging for top 2.

If clough gets the right striker in jtw then I'd be optimistic of a top half finish. ..someone to help baxter with good movement and pace. .We will be a different prospect then. ...

I do no understand how a team 3 points above the drop can even have one eye on the playoff. Bonkers. I'd still be happy with finishing 20th!
