Pre season we've been playing a different formation than we have been in recent years and it leaves me a little concerned.

Norwood is the sitting/holding midfielder with fleck and Lundstram in Central midfield.

I originally regarded this as a 'flat 3' when I first saw Norwood Lunny and Fleck playing in midfield together.

We conceded two goals to Burton and lost the match and in my opinion, looked shaky against a decent Barnsley side. I think they had a lot more of the ball and looked more dangerous on the attack than I personally think they should have done.

My understanding is that the reason for Lunny and Fleck playing is that they are both athletic and box to box midfielders and as such, wilder is hoping they are able to assist when defending and also when attacking. Last season when norwood dropped back to receive the balls, the amount of space it left in the midfield was enormous, fleck and Norwood were really far apart but I think Chris is now trying to have a player like lunny in there so that there are fewer gaps and to give norwood an extra man to pass the ball to as previously, fleck would be the only united player in the centre of midfield and would end up being marked by 2 people, giving norwood fewer options.

Seems like Wilder also wants Robinson to drop deep and play the Duffy role as well as a forward, plugging that gap that we have between the centre midfielders and the forwards.

Subtle formation change but I think that from what I've seen so far, it leaves us more vulnerable defensively than we used to be. I even thought Chesterfield looked more dangerous on the attack than they should have done.

I think the scoreline flattered us against Barnsley, was an average performance in appalling conditions. Think we got lucky that our players were fitter than Barnsley which allowed us to slot more past then in the 2nd half

Over thinking it pal. Trust in CWAK.

No worries. Pre season is for experimental formations.
I am confident for this season as a whole but I think we will struggle for the first half dozen games or so until we find our rhythm. I expect us to find our feet and finish comfortably away from the relegation spots.

We tweaked our system slightly around xmas last season and were a lot harder to score against.
Probably part of the evolution taking place as better equipt technical players come into the squad.
Takes time to change things but as the squad gets stronger suttle changes will continue to improve the system , of course everything doesn't work well and pre -season games are there to try these tweaks and decide whether they will work or not.

Every Wilder season tends to start by experimenting with the shape, losing a few games at the start, then gradually picking up pace as the season progresses.

Also, the midfield definitely wasn’t a flat 3 last year in my opinion. In fact you can see on the clubs lineups and on other media platforms that Norwood is deeper than both other CM.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see the same this season. Although it also wouldn’t surprise me if we hit the ground running with a tried and tested system.

One thing is for certain - we won’t give the league too much respect.

We can't afford to do that this season. We need to hit the ground running and pick up as many points as possible because it's only going to get harder as the season progresses. Imagine the uproar on here if we lose heavily to Bournemouth!!!
CWAK know what's required in the PL and I think we'll do ok and shock a few people and hopefully stuff those stupid comments down that clown Durham's throat in the process!

Sure the reaction will be no worse than after Middlesborough away. Wilder needed sacking and we were in a relegation battle.

The difference being from the OP, that Wilder won't start the season with Lundstram. After not deeming him to be a regular starter at Championship level, he'll bring someone in.

It would be interesting to see Ravel Morrison bossing it in a midfield three. Given a free role, as he has so much more technical ability than we had before. He is also blessed that he is a natural for that role.

I disagree. Much as I love the bloke, Wilder is like every other manager in the professional game. Stubborn and full of self confidence. Every season start with a different system. Every season abandon it after losing first games. Every season have a non Duffy tweak, abandon it. I don't know what he's looking for.

The very fact that Lundstram has been retained and has played the most in these friendlies tells you all you need to know about Wilder's character and thinking. He's determined to show Lundstram was a good signing and he will start. I hope he is a success, but I expect a few losses where it is obvious he slows us down and then a change. Then the other part of Wilder kicks in. The Hussey treatment, later to be known as the Holmes treatment. Player sinks without trace.

I wish he would stop overthinking, play our system from the start and if necessary change it during the game. Then again, I'm the first to criticise his substitutions. You can't win Chris. Carry on. Rather you than me!

;) 😬

I need a new I pad.

Even if we do bring someone in it makes sense to practice that system, and Lundstram is currently the most natural RCM. He's clearly taken his chance in pre season, like Bryan and (to an extent) K Freeman, and looks in a better position to be involved.

I still think it would be good for us to sign someone who can play both right centre half and central midfield, like Basham.

Stick to how we play. The same system that has won us countless games and 2 promotions in 3 years. 3-5-2 (or however you want to "dress it up") with Duffy (or another who is capable of playing such a role) linking play where ever possible. If Mr Wilder doesn't believe that Duffy is "up to it" then I hope that either Freeman or Morrison or both are capable of playing that role, or possibly even excelling, because when we play any other "tweaked" system I just think we don't look the same side. Stick to our principles, play the way we like to play and go for it . . . . . Attack, attack, attack!!! . . . . . Unless we're getting battered every week of course . . . . . . 😉😁

Exactly, start life in the premier league, as we left off in the championship. We should be going for Bournemouth in our usual way on that opening day, leaving the big wig ignorant premier league pundits raving about us by the end of the first day.

Lundstram has to start. He’s already demonstrated that he can accept the mantle of fans’ scapegoat, and his presence means there is a chance that if Mousset doesn’t score a hat trick in his first 20 minute appearance from the bench there just might be some leeway before he’s derided as shit. Its the small margins.....
