Substitutions Cost Us

Lost all structure and composure going to a back 4 and norwood kept giving it away as usual. No wonder we concede 2 almost instantly. Not all down to him as the whole midfield was starting to tire and get a bit sloppier but it seemed to push us over the edge. Fair enough we have to make subs to protect players, but anyone but norwood. Every time he comes on it taints his time at the club a bit more.

I don't like to be critical of norwood because he's been a great player for us for a long time and is a big part of what we have achieved in recent times, but over the last season or 2 he's been in steady decline, the prem just highlights it even more. I'd rather us give an under experienced player a go than a player we know is going to be a yard off the pace and not sharp enough.

Sam curtis is on the bench and is an exciting prospect RB, could have kept the same structure that was working pretty well for the whole game then, blooded a young player with a few mins.
Maybe because this is Norwoods last season he’s racking up some appearance money

I agree that Norwood’s time has come but it wasn’t the actual substitutions per se that cost us. It is the fact that every game this season (including those that we have won and drawn) we have been run ragged by superior footballers and superior athletes.

The players are fucked physically and mentally, both those on the pitch and the subs.

The opposition are able to bring on established internationals for the most part.

When players are bollocksed / injured, keeping them on only to increase the chances of serious injury is folly when we are already doomed.
In an ideal world, Norwood would have been moved on and Souza would have been fucked off in January. They weren’t and we have to play the hand we have dealt.

Wilder is far from perfect but don’t be blinkered.

Was Norwood even at fault for either of the goals?

His involvement on the goals:

3rd:
Norwood decides he can't let McTominay go. It means he can't get close to Fernandes, who is in his favourite position, centrally outside the box. IMO Trusty has McTominay covered and Arblaster may even be able to intercept such a pass. Trusty seems to scream at the midfield/Norwood to mark Fernandes.

4th:

Again Man Utd have attacked down our left, then switched the ball inside. Norwood again has no desire to close down Dalot. Souza tries to do that, from a bigger distance, and can't get there. Dalot chips it in behind, and our defence is not alert enough to track Fernandes' run.

Even though Norwood doesn't make huge mistakes on either goal, he shows what he doesn't offer these days. He can't get around the pitch quickly enough and is found wanting too often.

I'm surprised Wilder still keeps thinking Norwood's the man to make sure the points don't slip away, rather than players who can run.

Old ollie has the heat map of a subbuteo player that's broken.

Bogle gave us pace and options
Putting on Norwood just took that away....Bogle could have lasted the last 15. He wasn't spent
In four recent games Norwood coming on has resulted in a lot of late goals conceded..its not just a coincidence
How do you know he wasn’t spent?
We have conceded late goals all fucking season not just the last few games…!

Same posters every single week. Talking rubbish.

Everyone with a brain can see the subs. The Norwood one was forced as Bogle couldn’t carry on.

Wolder will explain the subs were forced and the posters will just stay quiet.

Taking Bogle off may have been forced, putting Norwood on was a choice, a bad one.

Baldock, Bash, Egan, Robbo, RND, Lowe, Davies, Brewster, Jebbo, McBurnie all out injured. Not stars, but all capable footballers who are missing from the squad. There's no depth left.

I'd consider giving Curtis a run but the fact he's not getting on may mean he's nowhere near the required level (think Seriki v Forest).

However you look at it, there are no good options

We had Curtis who is a right back, we had Slimane who plays right back for his country.

Instead we moved Holgate and Souza and left a massive hole in midfield for Man Utd to play in.
I laughed reading this.

Slimane played on the wing for his country.

Sensible analysis as always Bergen. We can all see the point you make about Norwood not getting round the pitch quickly enough but apparently the manager can't.

I'd challenge those who say there was no option but to put Norwood on because there were little alternatives on the bench. Larouchi for Brooks would have provided defensive pace down the left enabling Osborn to move into midfield maintaining left foot balance down that side. Souza for Bogle going into the back 5 pushing Holgate into Bogles position would have kept our shape. Its not the fact the substitutions were made, they had to be, but once again its the personnel used and changing of shape that has disrupted us. Its happening too often and is concerning that again we are questioning game management as one of the main reasons we have undone a very good first 70 minutes.

Problem is that there's no strength on the bench. Our substitutions weaken us. There's no plan B as he's just replacing tired players.

There's no depth to this squad and as soon as he gets some, a player goes down injured.

That said, not sure what Norwood brings to the party anymore.

Anyone except Norwood. Every time he is subbed on we lose guaranteed. Through gritted teeth he finally (10 games too late IMO) brings in Wes for Garbage. Just enough time to ensure the season is well and truly over. Between them both the Prince & Wilder have destroyed our club - please I beg you both fuck off!
Sign Norwood again and we will be looking at Lge 1 and we will deserve it, Norwood would fit in there though.
