Bored this morning, reading about storm Dennis got me thinking about how many have played for us. Longhorne, Finnegan, Shiels, Gratton, anymore ? The Menace dunt count.

I hate the whole idea of naming storms.

We're trying to copy the yanks' hurricane naming system but it just comes off as trying to make storms much bigger than they are. A bit of wind and rain doesn't compare to entire houses being blown off their foundations.
Yeah but danger bit of wind and rain warning sounds a bit naff

Quite right .

It should hardly come as a surprise to anyone that a small island in the North Atlantic is occasionally subjected to some strong winds and heavy rain , but since they have been designated as storms and given a name there seems to have been a collective national hysteria about their significance .

Whilst I have every sympathy for those affected by recent weather conditions , they are by no means unusual and something which other countries treat as almost everyday occurrences .

The whole thing reminds me of Bill Bryson's observation on 2 inches of snow falling in East Anglia being described as a blizzard , which was - " Where I come from , a blizzard is when it snows in November and you don't see your car again until April "

Yes, Dennis Thompson was a right winger (sometimes inside right). I ,first saw him play in the 1947-8 season and a fair few times until the early fifties. He was fast and tricky in the days when a winger headed for the bye line and centred towards the penalty spot. His problem was that he was only 5ft-6ins tall (whatever that is in centimetres). Consequently he was , frequently
booted up in the air by the take no prisoners full backs of the day. He often played on the wing with Jimmy at inside right. The latter played more at inside left though. Dennis was replaced (from memory )by Alf Ringstead, another diminutive winger who became somewhat of a legend. In those days we had players with names not commonplace now- Eg Fred, Alf, Albert, Ernest. Those were the days. Just like these are the days.

How about Dennis Mortimer? The ex-Aston Villa midfielder that played for us back in the...(whatever decade it was? - 90's?)

We've not had many called Dennis though, I agree. But we've had more Dennis's than Ciara's.

A quick Google suggests a Dennis Thompson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Thompson_(footballer) Bit before my time.

I wonder if some of the old boys' names will ever make a comeback like girls' names have? Don't see many Dennises around these days.
I have a brother called Denis. With one "n". I don't know why my parents decided to spell it like that, but they did.

His handwriting isn't great these days - not that it ever was really. But it is rather unfortunate that he tends to have a long down-stroke when writing some letters, like the letter "D", for example, which comes out more like a "P".

Dennis Bergkamp was a legend for us for a season. Or am I thinking of Conor Smmon?
