Stop mentioning Wilder ffs

I wanted CW to stay and still think it was harsh to sack him like that, but that's football.

We've got a new manager now and that's just the way it is, and he deserves to be backed and even the most diehard Wilder fans should want Selles to succeed at United.

As a Blade, no matter how he felt about his sacking, Wilder would want Selles to succeed with us.

People were moaning in the ground before a ball was kicked.

Nowt will change at this club with some of our fans.

Yeah that's the important finding today. Those fans who mentioned wilder before the game.

Dont we need to move past deflecting into this nonsense and actually just focus on the here and now?

Some of you took great delight slagging the Prince off. He rescued us from the McCabe years, set us up as a good business, stopped giving our players away and he actually cared about Sheffield United. Say what you want but without him we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are now and would probably still be alternating between this league and the one below with a squad full of aging never has beens. The new owners are invisible, they aren't football men and they're here to make money. They don't give a fuck about our club or its tradition and they don't care about the fans. We're numbers on a spreadsheet and should it not go well I fear the worst in a year or two.

Sacking Wilder? I was neither a fan nor a detractor, he did some marvelous things with us and he fucked a few up as well. I thought it was a bad decision to get rid of him but some of you were frothing at the mouth. My view is that he isn't a yes man, he didn't like the new direction at the club and willingly walked away. The new manager set us up today with a weak team, very poor tactics and we looked like a non league team, slowly chasing shadows and watching the big boys score for fun.

One game in, so many things wrong with that, fuck me it was bad.

UTBFTP 👊👊👊

Completely agree mate. Wilder certainly got a lot wrong but he got a lot more right. The levels of disrespect by some fans who you rightly describe as literally frothing at the mouth is absolutely unbelievable.

You can want a managerial change without resorting to some vitriolic comments spouted repeatedly towards someone who literally turned the club around not so long back.

That said, he is gone, it’s time to stop harping on about him and until proven otherwise you have to back the new guy.
Unfortunately for him and for the board they fucked up spectacularly on pre season.

To replace someone so popular with so many ( yes - not all) really needed some investment and proper preparation for the first game of the season to hit the ground running. Not to sell a defender and defensive midfielder without any prospect of having able replacements in for the first game.

I saw some vast improvements in our attacking play for parts of the first half but that’s it. The defence was an abomination and the obvious lack of defensive tactics was really quite worrying.

Yes that is only one game and plenty of time left in the window, but all the club has done is create more unrest between the fans and give Selles a mountain to climb already.

It’s not bedwetting to expect your club to be adequately prepared for the first game, particularly having come so close last year and even more so when the noises are that we are looking for promotion again.

Even the most inexperienced of managers knows that promotion is won with a solid defence and to build your side from there.
To not have that in place or even anywhere near in place for game 1 is negligent to say the least.

Was never convinced by Selles appointment, as I can’t really see what the fuss was about. His previous record is pretty unremarkable and if he was called. Rob Sellars he wouldbt have got a sniff of the job.

As per the above, I hope I’m wrong and I have to back him for the time being but pre season preparations have been a shambles.

The starting 11 with Wilder likely wouldn’t have been much different, maybe we’d have had McBurnie back but that’s hardly the end of the world. Souza and Anel would still have left, Moore might have stayed but he was average to shit and we’d have been similarly sluggish in the transfer market because we were the same last season. His £10m man also didn’t start today yet we seemingly can’t afford a permanent couple of defenders.

It’s the actions of Selles and the board over the next few weeks will be the deciding factor as to whether we do anything this season.

Spot on

FFS. He's history. Let it go.

We got spanked today because we had a makeshift (god I hope it's makeshift) defence that got carved open far too easily. RND is not a championship player. He's been unlucky with injuries but there's no place for sentimentality and he isn't good enough. Bindon...he'd better improve or that's a terrible waste of a loan.

Wilder would not have done any better today with what we had available, and using him as a stick to beat Selles with does nobody any good.

His parents would never have called him Rob. They're from Spain.

I’m firmly behind Selles, was ambivalent about Wilder leaving and think today may well be a bit of a freak result. But if the board sacks a manager who got 92 points and missed out on promotion by 15 minutes at Wembley there’s going to be comparisons all season, unless Selles bests him by winning promotion.

COH gambled by changing out Wilder & so this was the last result they will have wanted! A nightmare start immediately piles the pressure. This could get very ugly very quickly.
No, it will make the owners more determined than ever to prove they were right to sack the "HAS BEEN PISS HEAD" and bring in Ruben Selles

Wilder this, Wilder that. He's gone. Grow up.

Oh, I'm sorry - it didn't occur to me that someone who started a thread a couple of months ago, calling our most successful manager of the last several decades a "c*nt" repeatedly, would have a problem with people mentioning his name. However, now I know you don't like it, I'll think long and hard before I post anything about Chris Wilder ever again.

This is absolutely spot on in every single detail. Well said 👍

Here's my reasoning. Last season United played like a non-parachute club going for promotion. So you keep it tight at the back and have a sprinkling of quality players up front to win you games. You know, the Karanka/'Boro approach. The thing is, United had better players than 'Boro, being a parachute club, so the question was should United play a more open, expansive game and make the most of the superior quality which they undoubtedly had? Did the failure to do that cost the club automatic promotion? Leeds were always going to win the league, but were Burrrrrrnley really any better than the Blades?

So the board have taken the decision that they want a different style of play, namely Sellesball. We've seen that in action at other clubs, not least in the defensive third, and it needs real quality to play it. Paradoxically, it would have been better-suited to the better team United had last season than this current outfit. I mean, if you're going to reduce the quality of your squad then continuing to play Wilder's style would have made more sense.

In short, if the board wanted to play Sellesball then they needed to add to the quality United had, not diminish it.

Great post that deserves repeating.

I wanted him to stay, but he's gone.

It doesn't mean we have to rewrite history though.

Whilst yesterday’s game was poor, it’s worth remembering that we’re one game into the season with a significant amount of transfer window remaining to make improvements.

Let’s take a look at how Wilder’s first season started:IMG_7530.webp

And we still went on to win the league with 100 points.

I’m not claiming that Selles will necessarily be able to replicate that; but there were some definite positives in yesterday’s game- admittedly overshadowed by some calamitous defensive mistakes.

Whether you wanted Wilder in, or out, he’s gone now; and arguing over hypotheticals is pointless (and it’s not like we’ve not been on the receiving end of some damning scorelines under Wilder anyway).
