Wilder's chopping and changing is pretty much always tactical based on who we're playing.
Still not convinced. Look at Boro, a total shithouse of a team, all giants, yet we started with arguably as small a lineup as we could have leaving the likes of Stearman and Madine in the bench.

Kinda stuck two fingers up to Boro.

We all expected sharp not to play as he was injured, he wasn’t dropped. He was an un-used sub, and also an un used sub for the next couple of games from memory as he was not fit.
Correct. He was actually an unusable sub, only on the bench for psychological and sentimental reasons.

Yes but Wilder got that wrong, and he knew he got that wrong. Hence bringing on Madine at half-time. He would've gone back and forth on whether to start Madine (a half-time sub is rarely made completely out of the blue) and the way that Mboro play would've been a huge consideration.

I can't stress enough that Wilder will absolutely think about the opposition when picking his starting line-up. It's naive to think otherwise.

The first XI (save for freeman/baldock) more or less picked itself for the first 5/6 months of the season. So that tells me, he doesn't give a hoot about the oppo and he lets the oppo worry about us.

Good points but re the Sty game I don’t think Billy was ever going to play personally, remember he still missed the next two or three games. I think Wilder had him there just for his effect in the dressing room. Some have said that he might have come on if we needed a late goal, but that seems to go against everything Wilder does with injuries. Players come off at the first sign of a niggle and don’t seem to return till they’re 100%.

The fact that we kept Billy on the bench September last was an even bigger banana up them lot's arses.

I hope he was sat there in his flip flops that day.

So how did Dowell start working his way in? Why did Didsy start playing at AM?

If you don't believe me, listen to the main himself:

On whether United have a 'Plan B': "You can't do well on a consistent basis if you aren't flexible. Like everyone else, we are capable of changing it about."

On picking teams for matches, specifically re: Dowell v Duffy: "It's not necessarily a case of one or the other. There's no reason why Duffy and Kieran can't be a 'two' if we think that's best for a certain match or part of it. They're intelligent professionals. It's something we'll look at in training."

Well Dowell wasn't with us during the first 5/6 months.

Disdy at AMC, quite clearly because he doesn't think Duffy is effective for 90 mins.

Besides, I think whether it's Dowell, McG or Duffy there....I still don't think he takes the opposition into account for his selection, I beleive it's down to the individual them self and who's in the 'best nick'.

All this said, he now has the flexibility up top to be able to change it up, for the first 5/6 months, he hadn't.

I genuinely can't believe you haven't ceded anything here. But OK! This is a forum so maybe I was expecting too much.

There is nothing that you have said that convinces me that Wilder picks his team based on the opposition.

Look at the first XI for the first 5/6 months. Injuries and fitness aside, there were no surprises other than Duffy being dropped now and again. No formation surprises, not tactical surprises, no personnel surprises.

So explain how he picks his side based on the opponent. Give an example, it might help your cause.

Just because Wilder picks a certain starting 11 it doesn't mean that he hasn't considered what the opposition are going to do.

Personally I think it would be very unprofessional for him not to consider what any of our opponents are going to do which is why I can't see Wilder doing it.

Henderson
Bash, Egan, O'Connell
Baldock, Norwood, Fleck, Stevens
Dowell
McGoldrick, Sharp

Moore, Freeman, Cranie, Duffy, Madine, Hogan, Coutts

He might consider it and he might give particular instructions out, but I don't believe he picks players based on who we're playing.

Wilder has even gone on record saying that teams pay too much attention about what the opposition are going to do, rather than just concentrating on what they're going to do.

Eather way, Norwood actually needs the yellow card in this one, to make him available for Leeds away.
I think we've got enough to see out the Rovrum n Brentford games, but we could do with him v Leeds.

But if he doesn't get a yellow in this one, then he only needs to avoid a yellow in the Rotherham game to be available for Leeds and have all yellows scrapped.

Can't see that happening though, can you?
