Does anyone know of any pubs in Stevenage that will be blades friendly.

In the past, we've been in the "Our Mutual Friend" on Broadwater Crescent, which was half decent, some real ales and if I recall, decent sausage sarnies.

We've also been in the Harvester which is in the retail park across the roundabout, was a typical Harvester, big queues if you weren't as early as us.

Failing that, there is a Wethers in the town centre.

Thanks for that. Are you making the trip?

Our mutual friend is the best bet - above averge but not brilliant, and walkable. Full of Blades. I might try town center this year, at least to open.

I think that's where we will be heading for.

Last yeat we had a couple in the Weatherspoon's in the town centre. It was pretty average, but there were quite a few real ales and we got served easily. It was full of Blades.

Our Mutual Friend is in the real ale guide and I saw it was near the ground. Foxy and alcoblade - was OMF busy last year? I read on a ground guide that it could get busy on match days. I was fancying this one, but was worried it might be too busy.

This is Olle goes to watch the Blades on the push iron episode 3 (get the report ready SwissBlade). Getting up at half 5 to set off at 6 and cycle up. Whizz through London early doors and then get out into Hertfordshire via Barnet. Through Potters Bar and up to the shithole that is Stevenage, via some coutry roads. No doubt I'll get fookin lost. Quick swim at the leisure centre to cool down and then shower off. Then go and meet Ollessendro senior (Papa Luigi) who is arriving on the train just before half 10. Bit of snap somewhere and then in OMF for midday I reckon. Top banana.

Ollesandro, riding up, that is class but have you seen the forecast!:(

Ollessendro you don't learn do you! :)

Ollessendro is more likely to rock up at Leyton Orient having taken a wrong turn crossing the Thames than making it to Stevenage on t'push iron.

I reckon that if he and I set off at the same time I'd still beat him to Stevenage - I may be horrendously unfit but at least I can read a map :)

Busy but not too busy fella. Don't remember many real ales, but I'm on a run now (beard, leather patches the lot) so I'll give a few a whirl this time - if I get off the high street...:)

Apparently not. Had this one planned for a while. And a bit like Crawley I am anxiously checking the weather forecasted to see what is in store, all the time knowing that I am going to get pissed on!?

Hmmmm, need I remind you about when we rode 'together' to Reading. We did arrive roughly on time though, despite you skipping half the journey and taking the train :)

I'll put my map(s) in a plastic wallet this time!! What could go wrong?! ;)

Still got your number (unless it's changed) so will give you a tinkle if I'm nearby which I should be. Unfortunately got the car until I drop it off in London after, when it will hopefully get messy.

Too true but 40 years down south have softened me up, happy to ride all day but not in the rain! Think will stick to driving up this week. Mind you a ride from south to Bramall Lane would be great one day, when my dad died I rode from south London to Sheffield in a day, probably the most memorable day I've had on a bike.

Get yer waterproof's out and gerr'on push iron soft lad!? ;) Just kidding, get the train up owd mucker. At least then you can have a couple of beers. You coming for a drink phil? I'd love to hear about that ride. That is impressive! South London to Sheffield in one fooking day. I've been eyeing it up for a while, but am waiting for longer days and brighter weather. I was thinking I would do 100 miles in one day and stop in the East Midlands somewhere for the night. 170 miles is some fookin slog in one day.

I might have mentioned that I did 100 miles in one day (104 actually ;)) last summer and it took me all day but it was mainly on trails and forest tracks so I claim some mitigation. That extra 70 miles would be an absolute killer, also make sure your food and drink are continually topped up as I found myself in the middle of Sherwood Forest running out of energy with no fuel left - where's a petrol station when you need one!?!?!?

Doing the tonne is pretty impressive Wapping Blade. The most I have done is 75 and I was ruined. It was in Surrey Hills and the North Downs though and that really killed my thighs. Took me about 5.5/6 hours. Reckon with a break and a bit more snap I could have pushed towards hundred, on the flat mind. I took a couple of chocolate bars, nuts, 2 bottles of lucozade and some pasta for lunch when I went. I had read a blog about doing 100 miles and it recommended tasking lots of high energy food, plenty to hydrate, stopping hourly (and pissing regularly) and taking the time to stop for lunch. It said to get up early and hit the roads at daybreak, as it would take most of the day. Makes sense really. Think I could do it, or certainly when Spring finally arrives or if we actually get a summer. That final 70 up to Shef for Philb must have been excruciating!!?

I was a (much) younger man at the time and racing regularly. But to be honest I reckon it's do-able for anyone who rides a bit . Set off early-doors (I think I left Camberwell around 5ish, so out of the smoke before the traffic got up) then keep it steady, don't push too big a gear and keep eating. If you do it in the summer you've got till 9 before it gets dark so potentially 16 hours riding time. A great to see the country.
The toughest bit is at the end though, there are a fair few hills in Derbyshire!
75 miles in the Surrey Hills is a tough day Ollessendro, the climbs might not match the Peaks but there are a lot of them and they're all steep.
Food and drink are the key on any long ride. There are few worse feelings than getting hunger knock (the bonk!) on the bike (well apart from seeing the Blades lose 7-8 on penalties in the play off finals, but I think that was just a bad dream wasn't it!!)

What you fellas need is one of these;

Well that or a car.

been a while since we had that bad boy out. Too long. We should not forget great days in the history of SUFC like that. Have it!

Ollesendro have a good ride mate, you'll deserve a drink after that!

Is the nonce out yet?

We'll be a bit knackered I'd imagine, riding down in a ~300bhp machine, so save us a Lucozade !
