We are currently linked with any number of strikers yet, here in parochial s2, where we don't look any further than the end of our nose, we become ecstatic at the thought of eternal bench-sitter Stead. Is it his 20 goals in 3 years at Bristol City that excites so much? Or his 1 in 11 games at Huddersfield?

As for Blackman his 7 year career to date has yielded, wait for it.......28 goals, including quite a few from the penalty spot. I understand he is regarded as something of a no-hoper by Reading fans?

They are NOT the sort of players we want. They are nowhere near good enough.

I don't want anyone "back". It's never the same. Not that either of this prolific pair set the pulse racing in the first place.

Every transfer window we have it - rumours and expressions of hope that we bring X or Y "back". Is that really the limit of your ambition? Jon Stead or Nick Blackman? Complete mediocrities - and that's generous.

For me, it's yet another cause for embarrassment.

Very unfair on Blackman who scored 11 in 28 for us, playing on the right wing most of the time. Being an Englishman and a Blades fan we should cherish anyone who stick away penalties. We could have certainly done with Blackman when we played Walsall all those years ago and if he was on the pitch against Blackburn in the Premiership for us we may still be in the Premiership.

thought I made it clear in my post that I was just passing on a message from a mate who supports Huddersfield town

I am not susuggesting we sign him or anyone else for that matter

As for lacking imagination , who exactly ? Me for passing on a message? My mate for passing it on to me ? Or nigel Clough for thinking of signing a centre forward who once played for sufc ?

Sorry Judge, it wasn't a dig at you mate, I know you were just passing on the message, sorry if it came across that way.

What would be the first thing on your mind ?

1. Daleks.
2. Getting stuck somewhere in the past with no way out ...................like Wembley stadium.
3. Dinosaurs.
4. Seeing future horse results but forgetting who won.
5. Not understanding future technology.....a bit like now.

How about you Judgy?

Sex ....I would lose my virginity way before 40 with one of those bastards

I'm sure I read that on a forum that they'd spoken to Slew's dad and he signed for Blackburn at £7.5k per week.

If this is true (I have no idea if it is), he has earned £900k gross and over £0.5M net since he left.

We don't have an icon for "shakes head in disbelief".

It's no wonder our national game is in such a mess.

It's makes you weep if you think what we must have thrown down the drain in players wages.

His record says he scored 8 goals for us in 39 appearances (better than ~Porter?), albeit a lot of those as sub. Used to like him but he's a lot older and frankly if we can't do better then we may as well stick with what we've got.

"It's no wonder our national game is in such a mess".

Those on here who're involved in youth football will know better than me about the health of football at the grass roots but I only have to look in the local parks to see that most kids don't play football any more. When I was a kid, Endcliffe Park was full of kids playing 20 a side or more. If you had a football you were guaranteed a game any time of day or week (except Saturdays).

Sadly the days of free play in parks are gone. Out first thing in the morning back at dusk - we truly has blessed childhoods. Those of us of a certain age will mourn that loss for today's kids although we are also the parents that became paranoid about the "dangers". Computers obviously haven't helped.

I understand that football at weekends for schools is also lost.

It's a few years since I was involved in youth football with my two but that is probably still thriving.

He's a lot better than anything we currently have.

I've grown to dislike the return of former players, however bringing Stead back for me would be a no brainer.

Saturdays we're guaranteed not to see a game of footie these days

Not sure about this, Gibbo, but then again I don't know how long it is since you were a kid. I'd hazard a guess that just as many, possibly more, kids play football with their mates these days--they just do it in organised leagues under adult supervision, rather than ad hoc in parks.

When my older lad packed up playing a couple of years ago, his U13 team were playing in Division F of the Sheffield and District Junior League, and there was at least one division below that. That makes at least 7 divisions, of 10-12 teams each, playing in just one age group, in and around Sheffield, every weekend.

There's a hell of a lot wrong with the junior grassroots game, but giving kids of all abilities the opportunity to play organised league football (more of a organised kickabout, in Div F) isn't one of them. Back in the day, as you say, any kid in a park with a ball was guaranteed a game. These days pretty much any kid who wants it, however hopeless s/he may be, is guaranteed a regular game and regular "training" with an FA-registered club playing in an organised league. Whatever else is wrong with junior football (please, don't get me started), participation rates ain't one of them.

With Nakhi Wells gonna udders does that mean stead can/will come here? Or - does the arrival of Paynter stop this link?!

I reckon Stead will be the other striker.

I mean we have let 2 go King and Taylor.

Paynter and Stead for King and Taylor.....what an upgrade that would be!

Could well be as it looks like Sammon has told us to do one!
