Statues

I was looking at both statues t'other day but can't for the life of me understand why a cradle Wednesday supporter is honoured at Bramall Lane in such a way. I appreciate and understand that the man did great things for the city of Sheffield and was cruelly robbed of his very real potential in a tragic way. The reality is that he was rejected by Wednesday and his volte face was driven by bitterness at rejection.

By all means celebrate his achievements but one thing you can't change was his lifelong adherence to Wednesday, however tarnished.

A sad day for Blades, were supporters consulted about the Dooley statue ?

Does anyone else notice the irony in the fact that this is posted by someone with a username of Cahill?

Apologies if that's your real name.

jfk: "irony" You'll have to be more specifc I'm afraid. Derek Dooleys grandson seems to have followed the family adherence to the Dark side.

People of my grandfather's era often used to watch both Sheffield teams. This was in the days before away travel over distances further than the next town or city was commonplace. There would have been a sizeable number of (usually) men in Sheffield who watched United one week and wednesday the other, simply because they liked to watch football. Sure, they may well have favoured one or the other, but I bet there were quite a few who wanted both Sheffield clubs to do well.

This is true.

An old aunt of mine knew him quite well, and insisted that he held both clubs in equal regard.

This is not. Dooley was always a Wednesdayite as a kid. Doesn't the book he wrote with Keith Farnsworth confirm this? I thought it did.

He was rejected by Wednesday not the other way round. You're right his book makes clear that he was a cradle Wednesdayite and clearly his descendants have followed the family tradition. Despite the spin that some of our apologist Blades put on things fact remains Dooley was an embittered Wednesdayite.

So assuming the punter was going to buy the match tickets anyhow then the club are making about 15 quid a time profit...times must be really tough at the Lane these days. Leave the statues as they are please.

Can't be that tough. They turned down Bert's £1100!

Turned it down? More like the daft sod expected that he's be able to waltz in and get the cheap price after the deadline. Fortunately the club said not today pal.

With such devastating business acumen at work at The Lane, we'll soon be in profit again.

You can now have your name or message? I think on the statues in the car-park
Anybody else giving it a whirl? It's a bit different to the bricks!
It's £65 to have your name on the statue of your choice and you get 2 free match tickets as well.

I did it last season when it was offered. :hello:

But what your pea sized brain still fails to comprehend is that Bert will be far better off by not buying the season tickets, when he is in the country he will pay on the day and when it comes to a Tuesday night in December he will probably not bother going at all.

The club are the losers not Bert and what's more Bert couldn't care less especially after looking at the fixture list.

i've often thought there should be a statue to david pleat.. the man who wrecked the pigs.. guffaws

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought it was going to be about our on field displayes last season.

Eh, not bothered? Why did you bother making an offer for season tickets then, as if the club operates some kind of bartering system.

I can just imagine you stamping your feet in uttter disgrace in the ticket office because somat aint gone his way - wouldn't surprise me if you said 'do you know I've had a ticket for 50 years and expect to be able to name my price.'

>You don't get a statue for ruining the pigs you get a Job at the Lane
heh.. indeed times have changed. sorry about the double post.. it's a resurrected thread
derek dooleys daughter went to the same school as me and she was a massive pig.. saying that we've definitely gone down the pan since he left and i once met him and he was a really nice bloke TBH
