Staton

Also bear in mind that Staton tends to start programmes deliberately being a bit spikey and controversial trying to rustle up extra callers

Last week he was suggesting that if either Sheffield club want to become established then both stadia need big improvements.

He said SW definitely need move site due to a lack of space but admitted United do have the space to build bigger and better stands.

Don’t think he is balanced, always seems to be pro United, he was bigging up our players tonight, he said both Arblaster and Peck could go on to be big PL players and it would take a huge fee for United to sell one of them.

He also said we’re currently playing like an auto promotion team and he doubts West Brom will last the pace.

He often seems to belittle Wednesday and slag off Chansiri. Last week he was slagging off Hillsboro saying that even their South stand won’t be fit for purpose in 30 years. He said SW have little option but to move stadium. He also regularly slags off the SW Academy whilst praising the SU Academy.

Owlstalk called it Radio Sheffield United and think Staton is bias against them.
And I would do exactly the same if I was 100% pig masked in neutrality clothing

Passing reasonable comments is exactly what being balanced is all about. Doesn’t make him “pro” United.

In fairness tonight the bias was fully on show. Suggesting they’re constantly on the wrong side of decisions and never get penalties. He’s fuelling the rest of them. Anything for listeners I guess.

Again, that’s hardly pro United. Do you understand context? Hardly something any reasonable Wendy could jump on there.

Is Michael Palin a Blade?

Palin set the record straight when he was interviewed on Radio Sheffield. He said when he was about 10 one his uncles took him regularly to Bramall Lane, so he was a Unitedite as a boy.

Then I’m sure he said he lived at Ranmoor and also went to see Hallam FC and that team became his real love.

Regards the comments about him supporting Wednesday. He said that living in London he’s always been proud of his Sheffield roots and genuinely wants both clubs to do well and he’d love to see both in the Premier league.

Neither Blade nor Owl then.

Didn’t say that stadium example was due to his bias. He generally speaks the truth, which probably explains why he’s often praising United and slagging off Wednesday.

A few weeks back a few Wednesday fans were bigging up Rohl as the next big thing in management. Staton said the best manager he’s ever come across in this area is Chris Wilder shooting down the Wednesday fan saying Rohl has achieved nothing compared to Wilder, so it’s far to early to judge.

Also agree with Bertie Mee…often you overcompensate to hide your bias.

He gets some stick but that final comment, at least to me, seems grossly unfair. God forbid he reports things as he sees them.

Hi all, appreciate the comments and as always we will try to engage when our station comes up in conversation. Think we'll leave the biased stuff -- after all, I don't think we'll ever convince either side of Sheffield on that! 😄

However, onto the commentaries. When we are not commentating on Radio Sheffield at the Lane, we are still asked to provide home comms for the club (it's increasingly rare that we aren't commentating these days, given more and more games are being moved). In the past this has only been for audio but I believe the club now takes this feed for their stream too.

We do not have a summariser and it can be challenging to talk endlessly on a solo broadcast. Thus, we have in the past done some shout-outs on air. On Saturday, surprisingly we had more than we ever have done. Some people really appreciate it, especially Blades not able to be at the game, and it can help them feel part of it as an event. Others clearly don't feel that way, as expressed here. But this was typically used to just break things up with no summariser, that is all.

Hope this sheds some light. Congrats on three wins in a row 👍

Those wendyites moaning about refs agean they are deluded thinking that they get crap referees and they are the only club that gets them. we always get crap referees at Bramall Lane.

Ignore the miserable fuckers, they’ll moan about anything.

Thanks for responding. Quick question though - why no summarisers? I live abroad and rely on SUTV broadcasts - it’s a much better watch/listen if there is an Asaba or Bash to add some insights (can’t say the same about Rob Kozluk though - as much as I loved him as a player! 😂)

If we are not commentating for Radio Sheffield, we don't have a summariser for the game because ultimately we'd be paying for a summariser to provide a service for the club. We did request one from the club's end but I believe it isn't possible this season (in the past Carl did it as he was working for SUTV)

You say that “some people” really appreciate being given a shoutout whilst a game of football is in progress and I’m sure that this is the case .

Equally , there are many others like myself who are much more interested in the match itself rather than hearing that Sandra and Kev are listening in from a bar in Gran Canaria with details of the drinks they are having or even worse , that Ted and Gloria from Intake want a shoutout for their dog George who they will be taking for a walk at halftime .

Staton always seemed fairly impartial imho (commentary and interviewing) and a fairly switched on reporter.

Haven't listened to radio Sheffield (Wednesday) in years though so no idea what you all experience. As a previous poster said they need to create some controversy to maintain listeners and seems the pigs handball and collapse against Luton is this weeks 'news'.

However the overseas shout outs were absolute cringe. I'm the last person who would need a shout out just because I'm watching from overseas. However maybe it's an ask from the club to engage (non vpn) blades TV viewers?

Couldn't agree more. I live in the States and listening to that at the weekend had me reaching for the mute button. If the commentator can't do a solo commentary of the game then maybe he isn't cut out for that line of work. First game I went to as a kid in 1968 was a nil nil draw but it was memorable for an old feller behind me giving a running commentary for his mate who was blind. No whooping and hollering, or sending best wishes from Brenda in Brighton, just somebody giving someone who can't see the action a blow by blow account of who's doing what on the pitch.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate a few shout outs. But you really went OTT on it for the Derby game. There was no balance, it just got to be very annoying and very little football talk. If there is no summariser, what can be done ? I would be happy to discuss all thing united, and particularly the game i am watching! More than what Rob was doing- i dont even want paying, perhaps a guest summariser each week !

Agree with most comments above, but in general the standard of commentating in most sports now is at at low level, they all seem to want to quote endless stat after stat throughout the match, spoils it in my opinion, and yes, they'll say that's commentating, but you can't concentrate on some of these sports because of endless drivel

Ah, but the stats show how clever they are and how much preparation they have done.

Sam Matteface is head and shoulders above the rest for this. Watching the Euros on ITV, you knew he had a 'big stat' coming, and boy oh boy, was he going to shoehorn it in.

You're right mate, like that Crofty bloke on SkyF1, trying to give the impression they're in the know and us poor viewers have to be reminded of that

Whilst it's actually some pleb on the production team who's actually doing the research and is in the know.
