Start of Next Season

So now we have a start date of 7th August (barring a swift transformation into prime Barcelona), do we think we'll kick off at BDTBL (or wherever) with a full capacity crowd?

I know it is five months way but the thought of watching live football is the only thing keeping me sane during lockdown.

It was but boris came out yesterday and said that the reopening of schools will probably alter the rest of the “roadmap” due to an uptick in cases. If that is the case and the first step of the road map throws off the rest I’m comfortable saying it wasn’t a particularly well thought out road map and I’m viewing those dates as incredibly flexible.

I see where you are coming from and while I agree there will be an uptick in cases once more and more places are allowed to re-open, it will be different and negated somewhat compared to last July when we came out of the original lockdown because this time around the majority of the population should have had their first vaccine by the time of June 21st, and maybe even a quarter will also have received their second vaccine by this date too.

Either way time will tell, but we should all be confident the uptick in cases should be nowhere near as high this time around.

Oh I agree I didn’t think we’re due another peak fingers crossed but I think there will probably still be enough nervousness around new variants and an increase in cases over the summer that social distancing guidelines remain in place specifically at organised events. Festivals are moving towards requiring a vaccine passport for example.

That's the plan but subject to certain conditions. If infections hospitalisations rise quickly after kids go back, shops open, pubs open etc, I can see it being pushed back until all adults have had the vaccine plus the over 40s have the 2nd vaccine.

Depending on the actual number of people in the country (officially it is 67m+) that's a lot of people who won't be vaccinated.

Various studies carried out by supermarkets about what the country consumes suggests the number in the UK is actually 77m - seems incredible but is it widely inaccurate?

COVID is continuing to ask questions that no one has answers to yet and as for getting in BDTBL - IMHO you'll need a covid passport of some sort to be part of a large crowd in a confined space - which is another question that is only just starting to be asked.

If the feel good factor can return pre-season I don't think it would be a full house, but I doubt it'll less than 50% either!

Totally agree...rise in infections is not an issue if it does not lead to serious illness/death and hospitalisation and the early evidence from vaccines is it will achieve exactly this. In fact it is preferable given it will provide greater herd immunity. The efficacy of the vaccines are c90% across the board after a single shot and only slightly increase after the second (albeit will likely provide longer immunity). Take up is c90%. The SAGE modelling influencing the lock down/opening up is based on the Flu vaccine, c70% take up and c60% efficacy. A normal year between 10k-30K deaths from Flu (apparently none this year...bollox!) by end of this month excess deaths will fall significantly below 5year rolling average. If the above as expected plays out and restrictions remain in place beyond June and as a country we accept and comply then more fools us!

Hmmm... I have heard this theory that it will be similar to after World War 2 when crowds where at record numbers for ten years after... however times have changed now and there is a lot more for people to do, particularly the younger generation who quickly get into and out of the habit of things.

If as I suspect we are still a year or more away from full capacity crowds being allowed you might find that by then a large number of them would rather stay at home on cold Tuesday evenings in November in front of the PlayStation or XBox than trudge down to a football ground.

I’m pretty confident there’ll be stadium restrictions next season....probably 33%.

So I’d say our first crowd back in the CC will be a full house of about 10,000.....the atmosphere will be terrible...and pour cold water on the experience.

government scientists have said there’s no gaurantees yet that veccinated people can‘t still catch it and pass it on....so they are still a risk.

Think next season capacities will be reduced to 33%...and no one will be allowed to sit next to anyone....until they have more data.
