Stars? Admits ? (despite it being common knowledge)

Said Chris Wilder nowhere in the article, despite the quotation marks.

Its just another typical piece of crap "journalism" from the pig star .......

If it wasn't for the porcine end of south Barnsley buying it I suspect it would have folded some time ago.

Useful for using in the outside bog though ....... if you have one ! o_O;)

No but there's speculation about Billy going out to Bratford and that's what I think the bait was on this headline.

It is definitely clickbait but doesn't bother me and it's nowt new - in the days before online news the Star used to run headlines like "barmaid's arm burned by chip shop vinegar" to sell copy on quiet news days. It made it sound like she'd been attacked but was just summat about a chippy using the wrong grade of acetic acid in their condiments. It amused me that summat like that was the headline on the newspaper serving a city of half a million :)

So, did the barmaid's arm make a full recovery ... don't leave us hanging?:eek::eek:

I never know what I think about so called "Click bait" articles. Twenty years ago people bought a paper copy of The Star and that was the revenue plain and simple along with some advertising within. The internet has changed all that so I imagine a good chunk of The Stars' revenue went when the internet came along. The Star is fundamentally a business and has free reign to publish what it wants (within reason and of course the law). It is not a service nor is it the BBC which is state funded and as such I can cope with people slagging the BBC off. If you don't like what the Star publish online don't go on their website. In the same way that twenty years ago if you didn't like the paper you just wouldn't buy it. I agree some of what the Star puts on their website is rubbish and there isn't much proper "news". In many ways that's a good thing as there aren't three murders and 25 muggings a day in the Sheffield area. The local sport section isn't badly covered on the whole. In this case I do agree that the headline is a little misleading and is neither a quote nor paraphrasing Wilder but for the most part the Star does a decent job of reporting local news and sport in an era when the traditional print industry has been decimated.

I’m verging on outrage myself

Can I be outraged AND offended on your behalf as well please ? o_O

Its the modern thing to do you know ....... I may even take to social media to express my outrage ....... ;)

What is it again ...... that I'm to be offended and outraged about .........

As someone who only took English up to A Level, I also understand double quotations to be a direct quote from someone, and single quotes to be an interpretation.

Single quotes are the traditional British punctuation for all types of quotations. Whoever taught you that was giving you a non-standard rule. It's possible that some people have felt the need to come up with a reason and use for the two types of quotes. It's also interesting to note that the old type of quote, where the first symbol was a mirror of the second (a backwards 9), rather than 6 and 9, has disappeared because you can't get it on a keyboard.

Calm yourself, my friend. It’s quite acceptable to be outraged, even when you don’t know exactly what you’re supposed to be outraged about - for example, look at Esablade

103 posts so far of squabbling bollox.

Something to do with vestal virgins not getting cut that frequently and the mess left behind when they do.

Managers always admit or vow don’t they?

It reminds me of my favourite local radio hack nonsense “Good news for Doncaster Rovers - they’ve just equalized.” They fucking know, you numpty...

Don't know pal maybe Danny04 could look into the archives and put you out of your suspense - I'm pretty sure I did read that rather than dreamt it, prob in the 1970's.

I'm incensed and have fired off various emails to people's employers demanding sackings for offending me

On the other hand, I am offensive, which is a new minority group, so I can sue for discrimination if my employer sacks me.

At Crab Industries it's called Company Policy.
I think you mean 'Company Policy'.
The headline’s paraphrasing his quote hence the single ‘ marks rather than “, if we’re being pedantic (and correct).
If it was Jordan Hallam and Tyler Smith leaving on loan, I’d take your point. These four are in the first-team squad
Danny, a serious question, as I always enjoy learning. (Let those who want hot football news on here go to the threads about Robson, Weir, etc.) Are you taught this use of ' and " as part of journalism courses? I had never been aware of it before, but it just about works in today's Star, except for the item on Rotherham on p. 61, where the headline has an apparent quote from Warne with no inverted commas at all, and a panel with a quote with some words missing which has " round it. Journalism is produced rapidly, so I assume it is not easy to get a detail like this right every time. And quite often, it seems that it does not really involve paraphrasing (which is putting across the original in different words), but simply missing a few words out (which of course sometimes changes the meaning). In the case of the headline which set all this going, I would say that you did indeed paraphrase Wilder's original statement, with 'stars' being standard media hype, but I still think the 'admits' is a bit naughty; 'explains' would be more accurate, but also more boring. Reader beware!

My messages or email is open for a sensible discussion on the topic, mate - or let’s go for a beer!

Danny04 I can understand your willingness to defend the actions of your employer, but doubt that you do yourself any favours by getting involved in sparring matches on a football forum which is primarily intended as a means of debate not as a means of justification for any and every action.

Did someone mention free beer amongst all this arguing?

I'm mainly glad they didn't pull out the old faithful "Blades ace", dread to think what would have happened!
