Anyone not on the defensive would actually imagine that the percentage is actually very low, seeing as only one person, until Hodgy proved your claim of being correct on the useage of. " ' ", incorrect, questioned it. Correctly.

I mean. You're a journo and you didn't know the correct usage.

Well, I did and do but thanks for the concern :) Hodgy’s claim was from one style guide which we don’t use. As an expert in journalism you’ll notice the Daily Mail, for example, use ‘ for direct quotes rather than “.

And if only one person has ever questioned something, surely that means the percentage that understand is high rather than low? o_O

Sorry Danny04 , I support you and the Star when I think you're right, but this is nonsense. There is no difference between single and double quotes, it is simply a style choice. The US has traditionally used double quotes and because of computers/MS Word/the internet, it is now pretty pervasive. Suggesting that it indicates different context and that people will understand that nuance is wrong.

Having listened to CW’s prematch interview, where he mentions that all 4 might not necessarily leave, I reckon “star” Heneghan might stay to give that extra cover in defence.

Excellent interview, highlights Evans is going nowhere, and that Sharp will get chances to get back into the line-up (pouring cold water on the rumour mill threads): http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05w1fnd

1. Err? You did use the style that the Daily Mail use for direct quotes then. So is it a direct quote. No?

2.Err again. Clearly not, as you seem to have said above it's a direct quote when it isn't. Which earlier you even admitted yourself.

Best get Burkey on the job Danny.

I am giving you a like purely for using jazz mag,I have absolutely no idea what PornHub is,my best guess is a place all mucky mags go when they are out of date, and men in long raincoats take advantage of the cut price pamphlets.

By far the best website on the tinterweb. A solicitor on here told me about it.

No, because it’s not the Daily Mail. It genuinely isn’t hard to understand and I don’t think you’re an idiot, so I assume you’re just playing the arsehole so I’ll leave you to it. Until next time, of course :D

I think it's a poor click bait headline, you don't.

We both know there will be one.......

Nice try. It's more Ilkley to mean that this has never been explained to readers? Do libel lawyers ever use this to claim that something was a paraphrase rather than a direct quote? Private Eye could have saved themselves a fortune...

No idea mate, I’m not a libel lawyer (not that that stops anyone having in-depth knowledge of another profession)

It turns out it was Ryan Giggs after all.

Oh shit! :)

I too have to agree with you.
Based on your intended audience, Danny04, it is headline grabbing, deceiving and very frustrating for the readers.

For those who have the time and inclination to read it there is some interesting information on the matter. I found the 'Answers',section most enlightening:

I can’t imagine how deceived you must have felt clicking a story headlined ‘Blades stars could leave on loan’ and finding out that four members of United’s first-team squad could, actually, leave on loan. One day, I’m sure you’ll learn to trust again. The first answer on your link is the most enlightening: ‘This is simply a question of style.’

That means that some people use double quotes and some people use single quotes. It doesn't mean you can invent odd rules about what different quotes mean and then use it to justify writing something confusing or misleading.

I haven’t invented shit, that’s what I was taught. But course, you know better

So because you was taught it then it must be right, and allows you to abuse it and mislead your audience?
Your role is based on trust and credibility, when you lose these qualities then your audience will tire of the bullsh!t and dwindle.

Thanks for the pep talk, coach :D
