Sheffield United: ‘Blades stars could leave on loan before weekend’ admits Lane chief Chris Wilder
Stars? Admits ? (despite it being common knowledge)
Said Chris Wilder nowhere in the article, despite the quotation marks.

No but there's speculation about Billy going out to Bratford and that's what I think the bait was on this headline.
It is definitely clickbait but doesn't bother me and it's nowt new - in the days before online news the Star used to run headlines like "barmaid's arm burned by chip shop vinegar" to sell copy on quiet news days. It made it sound like she'd been attacked but was just summat about a chippy using the wrong grade of acetic acid in their condiments. It amused me that summat like that was the headline on the newspaper serving a city of half a million![]()

I’m verging on outrage myself
As someone who only took English up to A Level, I also understand double quotations to be a direct quote from someone, and single quotes to be an interpretation.
Calm yourself, my friend. It’s quite acceptable to be outraged, even when you don’t know exactly what you’re supposed to be outraged about - for example, look at EsabladeCan I be outraged AND offended on your behalf as well please ?
Its the modern thing to do you know ....... I may even take to social media to express my outrage .......
What is it again ...... that I'm to be offended and outraged about .........
UTB & FTP
You’re the one suggesting that not me. I asked if you interviewed him personally
Hang on in there Sean, it gets worse..
103 posts so far of squabbling bollox.

So, did the barmaid's arm make a full recovery ... don't leave us hanging?![]()
On the other hand, I am offensive, which is a new minority group, so I can sue for discrimination if my employer sacks me.I'm incensed and have fired off various emails to people's employers demanding sackings for offending me
I think you mean 'Company Policy'.At Crab Industries it's called Company Policy.
Danny, a serious question, as I always enjoy learning. (Let those who want hot football news on here go to the threads about Robson, Weir, etc.) Are you taught this use of ' and " as part of journalism courses? I had never been aware of it before, but it just about works in today's Star, except for the item on Rotherham on p. 61, where the headline has an apparent quote from Warne with no inverted commas at all, and a panel with a quote with some words missing which has " round it. Journalism is produced rapidly, so I assume it is not easy to get a detail like this right every time. And quite often, it seems that it does not really involve paraphrasing (which is putting across the original in different words), but simply missing a few words out (which of course sometimes changes the meaning). In the case of the headline which set all this going, I would say that you did indeed paraphrase Wilder's original statement, with 'stars' being standard media hype, but I still think the 'admits' is a bit naughty; 'explains' would be more accurate, but also more boring. Reader beware! The headline’s paraphrasing his quote hence the single ‘ marks rather than “, if we’re being pedantic (and correct).
If it was Jordan Hallam and Tyler Smith leaving on loan, I’d take your point. These four are in the first-team squad

primarily intended as a means of debate
So what’s wrong with debate?
Nothing at all. In fact if enough of us join in it’ll become a mass debate.
I’ll have that beer when I’m next in town....![]()
An all male affair, apart from the glamorous hostesses apparentlyFree beer and The Star is paying for it?
