Agree with your there SB , McGrath was best I ve seen a Rolls Royce centre half didn’t even train in the week due to knee injuries , he must have been a hell of a player in his Man U & Villa days . As I said Egan reds the game well & has good positional sense as well as being our best CH in the air . If we keep him I think we’re gonna see a hell of a player develop

I'm fairly sure he played in the first game of the season against Liverpool as well. Tracey got injured and Pemberton (?) went in goal as we lost 3-1. He did struggle in that game I remember.

Think you're right there he was subbed in the second game v palace

Stancliffe played against Liverpool, Derby and Crystal Palace.

The games against Liverpool and Derby were full games. As you say, he was subbed against Crystal Palace.

Was never convinced by MacPhail. Generally reasonably sound for the level we were at, but I always felt a costly clanger wasn't far away.

Kenworthy on the other hand was totally reliable and more than a little skilful. I feel he was capable of performing at the top level.

He did actually make 6 appearances for us in the first division during our disastrous 1975-6 campaign. However, his appearances coincided with our best run of the season. W4, D1, L1. Not bad when you consider we only won 6 games all season.
 
Its always difficult to compare players over different era's because football's changed so much since the 80's, the standard is so much higher now. Stan should be remembered as a great player in his era and someone who was a great captain. Sadly, we were pretty average for much of Stan's time and he ran out of legs by the time we finally got to the top flight.

Egan is a modern centre half and a superb defender, although arguably one area Stan may have been better is in the aerial battles?

I also went to colley school with paul and watched him often for rotherham.
As a group went on some booze and fishing trips at that time.
He was great for us at that time but he never hid his love for wednesday
Which was the cause of plenty of banter at the time.

I still go in colley club every now and then but dont ofton see many from the old school.

Blimey you still live local then? I moved away from Sheffield a while ago, live down in Poole now near Sandbanks but still go back to see friends for a night out. Most of the family have now passed on unfortunately & I have to admit that driving around the area I can't believe how much is gone; still have the memories though!

Yes i still live local but im thinking of moving to the coast when i finish work.
Dont see many from school tho.

I played football with Paul, lived on same road. I left colley in 1970.

I only saw the last couple of years of Satan’s career with us. He was a ‘stopper’, not the most skilful but hard as nails. Egan has more mobility and skill on the ball but, as folk say, it’s a very different game now.

I knew paul well back in the day and he would say Egan is a different class.

He also was a fixture in the worst period ever for the Blades.

Due to the failings of others rather than him.

Incidentally, he did not feature in the infamous home game against Walsall in 1981. If he had done so I suspect we might have scored 'that' penalty.

We didn’t sign him until the 83-84 season, I think. He was one of the key signings that got us up (just), along with Cockerill.

This is John MacPhail we're talking about?

We signed him in 1978.

He did not feature at all in the 1983-4 season. That is because he was no longer our player!

If it's Kenworthy you're talking about, he started playing for us in 1976.

I think you are confusing the posts about MacPhail and Kenworthy with those that are about Stancliffe.
