Stadium Development

It’d be fine if the rest of the stand/ground was spot on and it was purely just a vanity project. But spending £10/15m on something and then still asking people to piss up a wall, in an outbuilding, after they’ve queued up in the rain for a pie, seems a bit stupid.
No development would be done without a upgrade in facilities and covered concourses

You could write on a postage stamp what I know about architecture so apologies for the silly question but why would removing the kop posts cost 10 million quid. Seems extortionate
There's a lot of steel in those kop posts so they're probably quite valuable.

If we took them down , we'd have to store them in a pole vault.

People keep going on about ROI but it’s not just about how much immediate financial return they can make on any upgrade.

Just like if I spend many thousands on my house, when I eventually sell that will be reflected back in the price.

Does this not apply to a football club?

A club with an attractive stadium with modern facilities will alway sell for more than one without when any investor comes to sell.

That’s when they get their ROI and make some money on what they’ve put into facilities and the infrastructure.

I agree to a point, but it's still a bit of a gamble, if you spend all that money in facilities and then the new facilities don't provide additional income, ultimately they aren't more valuable than what you had before.

If someone has the money to pick between a rundown house or a decent one, they’ll pick the decent one.

Same applies to a football club.

You have to live in a house, the prerequisite for a football stadium is that it makes money.
Up to a point but a club in the Premier League makes any money made from hospitality etc look pretty small change, certainly for a club of our size.

Having a decent ground, training facilities and infrastructure would go a very long way to getting someone to buy the club over someone who hasn’t. and they’d be willing to spend a bit more to get that club.

What value for a hotel that has never returned a profit ?
One which has just had a full refit.

Yes I caught this back in March.

8 months have elapsed - it might be time for an update
I suspect the silence on the "keys being handed over" is due to the ongoing takeover attempt. Why announce something that could either change or the new guys want to include in their first months
If you just removed the posts, the roof would fall down. To ‘remove the posts’ is a much bigger (and costlier) job than most people think. To remove the posts would mean the entire Kop would have to be redeveloped, hence the £10m cost that is bandied about. Whether that figure is correct is a different matter.
Souttar has a brother. If he's as big just get him and their old man to hold the roof up

The council run Safety Action Group have regular meetings about our ground and what the working capacity should be for each and every match.

Not sure if it's true but I heard a rumour that in case of a disaster then every stand be able to be evacuated within a certain number of minutes.
I understand that the concours areas and staircases on the BLUT are too small to enable that to happen, when at full capacity.
However we did put in an additional staircase on the BLUT near the John Street stand.

As S65 said I think SAG make it up as they go along to try to justify their jobs and to make themselves look all powerful and important.
Aye
Just think if they’d been about April 15 1989. ?

I know. It’s weird world renowned Hilton hotels thought it worthy of putting their name on it.
They get a management fee for running it. Paid monthly from the income generated ( l believe). Generates cash for them.

The Hilton brand sees many failures every year in the franchise sector.

I never even mentioned the hotel. I was talking more about the actual stadium, hospitality and academy plans.

Saying that, scope for the hotel to make a profit only grows. Sheffield city centre has/is undergoing a major regeneration, just look at the other end of Bramall Lane for evidence. The hotel sits on the edge of the city centre. There’s no reason it won’t make money going forward.

Previous to it being brought up by Tom Bott and my reply to him. It was not in the point I made.

Sorry I thought that was obvious.
I just replied to a post where you mentioned the Hotel by referencing the Hilton involvement as a reply to Toms post, err, about the hotel. And nothing else.

Don’t get why you seem so worked up. I wasn’t disagreeing with you just stating the realities about how Hilton franchise operations generally work.

Getting worked up? Sometimes when something is in print it can come across as totally different in the way someone is trying to say something. It’d take a lot more than this conversation for me to get worked up.

I think it was pretty clear what I meant. I’ll leave it there anyway. UTB

I think even if we wanted a new stadium is there many locations it could be?

One of the best features of the lane is the city centre proximity, pretty easy to get to from interchange/train station.

No doubt council would want it on a tram route if we was it move.
The only options I can think of in my limited understand are:

a) Norton Aerodrome. There plot and surrounding area just about the right size with potential to expand into surrounding greenfield sites if needed (assuming planning law is relaxed sufficiently). Next to the dual carriageway and across from Herdings tram stop.

Residential area though and I doubt the non-football fans of Charnock, Herdings etc would be too happy.

b) Sheffield Airport. Close to the parkway and could probably shift a lot of the businesses there relatively easily if needed. A long way from other amenities though and no current public transport offer.

c) Weedon Street - there is a big patch of derelict land there and a few warehouses. Close to M1, tram, Meadowhall station and all the amenities around the retail parks and shopping centre. Think Meadowhall have been threatening to develop this bit for years though so probs a non starter.

d) switch sites with Sheffield Arena and incorporate Don Valley bowl. New state of the art arena in the city centre which would probably have space for a multi-storey car park. Blades would probably do quite well from such a deal and get a decent size spot with tram stop etc, loads of car parking etc. Amenities nearby for match days and space to build extra. Also probably some benefits to be realised being so near to the EIS.

The lack of suitable sites will, in my opinion make a ground share with the pigs inevitable, or at least will become a serious proposition in the next 20 years assuming they are still a going concern.

As much as I’d hate to move from the lane the first of the clubs to take their medicine and move to a new ground will probably have the upper hand for years to come and have a chance of sustaining themselves at the top level. Obviously though neither side has an owner with the funds so it’s not happening any time soon.

The Blades will never merge with that lot for swillsbrough, forget it I dont know why people bring it up aint going to happen.

Almost all clubs that have attracted heavy investment have done so after the stadium was rebuilt/built. It's a big concern to would be investors to have a stadium with approximately 3,000 - 4.000 seats that are so bad the club couldn't even give them away.

It's not the 1970's anymore where people were quite happy to get a ticket and stare at the back of someone's head for most of the game.

The pigs were talking about Neepsend Lane on Porktalk as a site where they ‘could’ move to. Think they must be talking about the land up near Arthur’s Skips where the gasometer was.

I think this would be the best bet of them all, personally. Still not a million miles from town (with Kelham Island/Neepsend nearby for pre match drinking/eating). Close to the A61 and tram stop at Infirmary Road. Also, the re-opening of the Stocksbridge - Victoria line keeps being mentioned and something like this nearby could give it the viability it needs to get it over the line.

It might also give a bit of a leg up to something finally happening at the ski village.

It is a bit of a dump still around that area, but it’s undergoing mass transformation. Especially once the old Stones brewery is redeveloped.

Plus they could have an 80000 capacity, which would sell out for each game.

Aye
Unless you go away when it’s ‘de rigueur’ to stand staring at the back of a coked up arseholes head while he faces away from the pitch bellowing & gesturing at home fans

Aye would be a great site that. Bit like Hackney Wick round the West Ham ground. Mrs family are West Ham season ticket holders and there is a new bar or eatery opening up virtually every home game so they say.

Despite the ground itself not being suited to football you at least get the feeling it’s in a real place rather than some godforsaken retail park. Would be a similar vibe down Kelham Island/Neepsend.

Only downside maybe would be it’s slightly hemmed in with the river at one side and Parkwood springs on the other.
