Squad reshape this summer

I think Shackleton is the back up RB.
We played a behind doors game vs Bradford in the week and he got another 70min
How long before he breaks down with injury again and come march we get the tom Davies style announcement that he'll be leaving at the end of his contract...

Oxford United have been placed into a transfer embargo. With them being in League One again maybe now is the time to pounce and sign Cameron Brannagan. He'd bring some much needed leadership to the midfield and team.
Would prefer de Keeersmaecker or jamie McDonnell

Still got loads of players, haven’t we?

G (4): Cooper, Davies, Grbic, Faxon

RB (5): Seriki, Shackleton, Curtis, Sachdev, Polendakov

LB (5): McCallum, Burrows, Norrington-Davies, Buyabu, McGlinchey

CB (5): Tanganga, McGuinness, Baptiste, Sasnauskas, Zatterstrom

M (9): Arblaster, Hamer, O’Hare, Brooks, Chong, Matos, Peck, Rothwell, Ukaki

CF (6): Bamford, Campbell, Cannon, Marsh, Oné, Nwachukwu

That’s 34. Way too many

Could we get away with just loans this year? The odd irresistible free thrown in?

We’ll look to offload Grbic on loan or perm. Faxon also needs to go and play and the young lad Betts needs to play U21s regularly. That’s -1

I would say none of the right backs are up to supporting Seriki so either continue their education on loan or move on. I see Polendakov leaving and Curtis and Sachdev on loan. We’ll be stuck with Shackleton. Depending on formation Walker is obviously in a central defensive 3 or right back. That’s -3 and +1.

I don’t see any change at left back and I can see RND moved on, as well as Buyabu. That’s -2.

We have 5 centre backs and question marks on them all. Maybe Sasnauskas gets brought into the squad but I can see the other two younger ones pushed out the door. McGuinness we may be stuck with but we need a new first choice. Maybe we get Souttar on loan and pair him with Tanganga and have McGuiness and Sasnauskas as back ups? That’s -2 and +1.

So down from 34 to 28 as we move to midfield.

Hamer will leave. We’ll push Matos out the door too. We’ll be stuck with Chong. I’d be amazed if Ukaki isn’t pushed out too. Can see one of Peck or Brooks leaving but not both. I can then see Phillips on loan or Choudhury on loan if that fails. That’s -4 +1.

Squad down to 25 now with one free and 2 loans.

Up front we might cash in on Campbell but eventually realise it’s not worth it and we will be stuck with Cannon. Nwachukwu won’t be here come end of August. So that’s down to 24, possibly 23. Expect then another loan striker if Campbell goes otherwise Oné playing more and potentially a loan winger.

Take us to 25 with one free and three or four loans depending on the fate of Campbell. Expect us to try something decisive like Jamie Vardy for a year though he won’t come.

That’s my prediction.
You're right, the squad is far too big. Didn't Wilder say as much when he came back?
So far we've lost Brooks & Matos and brought in Donovan. I agree with most of your choices but it's going to be difficult to shift the players we don't want.

Just had a quick look and despite frustrations having only signed one player.
First team players signed by this date (10th July) since 19/20 read as follows:

19/20: 2 (L Freeman & Jagielka)
20/21: 0
21/22: 0
22/23: 2 (Anel & T Doyle)
23/24: 0
24/25: 1 (Jamie Shackleton)
25/26: 2 (Bindon & Ukaki)
26/27: 1 (Donovan)

Not saying this is the way it should be but this is the way it is I'm afraid.

I dont mind frees and loans but last minute deals aren't great are they? Management bang on about a pre season for fitness and tactics but late signings are going to be weeks behind 🤷‍♂️

I can see the squad being overall weaker by the end of the window. Just the feeling I get.

That said, the biggest issue or biggest change I can see at the moment, is Wilder's hunger...

At each of his previous clubs and here previously, he's been very up front and vocal if the squad isn't good enough and if he needs backing. We could really do with a bit of that right now.

We just need a proper centre back. It would change people’s feelings overnight.

I still rather optimistically maintain there isn’t massive changes needed to this squad unless others start to leave.

If Matondo has made a decent impression then don’t over complicate things. He is a genuine winger who plays on that side even if he is inverted, provided he’s proved his fitness.

He’s going to provide an alternate squad option, a breather for O’Hare or Hamer.

At present, Donovan/Chong will take up the right. It’s then a question of whether we play Cannon alongside Bamford in some games or just one up top. Either way, unlikely Matondo is a bona fide starter.

Well 24 days and counting to the KO of the 26/27 season and at the moment is looking like a long long season.
Atm we've resigned 1, brought in 1 loan and signed 1 34yr old RCB.
Nothing has been addressed to the defence which was at best shockingly poor.
I think MF might be ok, we still need to get a balance on the left wing so another player (a winger) needs to come in soon,
we also need to get Hamer/OHare sorted playing Hamer on the left just leaves Burrows exposed.
I still think we need another out and out striker to help Bamford.
The game from Saturday at Rotherham onwards we should be seeing a settled starting 11 and a preferred formation but as usual well end up getting the dregs with days to KO.

At the moment, I am not too bothered about needing more signings, I just am struggling to see what formation we play with this current squad which on paper is not a bad squad.

Hamer and O'Hare (arguably our 2 best players) don't seem to have a clear role in the side?!

Its simple
Replace vini and anel
Which we still havent done
If we have to sell peck to get a commanding cdm so be it
If we have to sell burrows to get a commanding centre back so be it

Baptiste, Doherty and at a push Zatter fill the defensive holes .

Donovan replaces Brookes and One takes the place up top .

At the moment its very like for like ( player positions if not quality or experience)

Its not the worst position to be in , if we sell then the positions may be filled with a bit more quality but in terms of numbers we have a squad.

Long way to go before the window closes so give it chance .

Top 8 no probs imo

There's been no reshaping as such so far. Just one or two incomings to replace outgoings.

The defence still looks bottom half.

Hopefully plenty of activity in the next 5 or 6 weeks.

At least this season a slow start won't stop promotion as it's not a likely outcome anyway.

But the frustration is all the posturing towards the back end of the season saying how they know what they want this summer.
I honestly think that they were expecting more to leave, i.e Peck, Hamer and Burrows

If we signed Matondo & a centre back and then did no other business (in or out) I think we’d be in a good place. Defender has to be good though.

I'd be happy to go with something like the below, which has scope to taking a centre back off and going with two up top, or three in the centre of the park depending on the situation.

Something always seems off and unbalanced when Hamer, Peck and O'Hare play together. Hamer gets forced out wide as a result which doesn't play to his strengths. Both Hamer and O'Hare get up and down the pitch in attack and defence so they can both play box to box.

I'd be willing to sell Peck to fund permanent transfers for a QUALITY centre back and a QUALITY left winger. Whilst it would prove unpopular with out fans, it's what clubs do up and down the country do every season. Sell one player to strengthen two other positions. The team becomes stronger and better through selling that player and reinvesting the money in PERMANENT signings, rather than wasting monies on expensive loans.

Baptiste might not turn out to be the answer but I've added him for now.

Trouble is m8 if we get rid of Peck we've got no mobile aggressive midfielder, yes he's young and got faults but Riedewald is more of a defensive midfielder, Rothwell hasn't got going yet, Blaster can be good but well see how he's recovered from his injury, I would like to see Blacker in there as well.

We need a ball winner in midfield, personally I see the same as last season with 4 4 1 1 mainly because we’ve brought in a winger which when we played 5 3 2 we never played with one.

We've lost our parachute payments the same summer the league have waved in PSR, I'm not honestly sure what people are expecting? The owners are only allowed to make up a small amount of shortfall even if they wanted to put more in. It was obvious we'd have to downsize financially this summer and we were never going to throw big money at transfer fees. If we can get a decent left sided centre half in I think we're in a pretty good spot to be competitive.

Yeah…. We’ve regrettably timed it perfectly wrong as these new financial rules limit us. However I can’t say I fully understand it as a lot of clubs appear to be paying big fees. Could be trouble a few months down the line for a few clubs if they don’t go up.

Need some pace in the middle mate, only my opinion though, were slow in making attacks, and dont get enough goals from the middle of the park!
