Because it's something easy and completely free to fix but they leave it a random disordered mess season after season

United can now confirm squad numbers for the upcoming 2025/26 EFL Sky Bet Championship season.

Vacant numbers from the end of last season have been picked up by United's new signings with Tyler Bindon wearing 6, Louie Barry 27, Djibril Soumare 18, Ehije Ukaki 20 and Mihail Polendakov 32.

There's been some changes from the players retained from last season with Andre Brooks moving from 35 to 11, Tom Cannon switching from 28 to 7 and Ryan Oné changing to 26 from 39.

I reckon they often stay the same for two main reasons.

a) the player wants to keep the same number
b) they do it for fans that have paid for a shirt with a name and number on the back.
