As it stands currently I’d go, if this were Football Manager (although 3-5-2 is a bastard for numbering)

1 Moore
2 Baldock
3 Stevens
4 L Evans
5 JOC
6 Basham
7 Fleck
8 Coutts
9 Clarke
10 Sharp
11 Brooks
12 Keeper

Coutts should take 8 but that's the number he wore when he was previously recovering from a bad injury and looking like a flop. Maybe psychologically it'd be better if he just kept 15?

4 suits Fleck, he should keep it.

I'd set aside 7 and 8 for two new attacking players. Lundstram shouldn't keep 7 and Evans hasn't quite done enough to take 8.

Stearman?

Wilder has shown little interest in changing numbers in the past.

Transfer listed players tend to lose their numbers (like Coutts and Freeman when he first took over, Done, Hussey and Brayford last year).

Whatever their numbers are in pre-season training will be their squad numbers when the season starts (players like Done and Brayford had no squad numbers on their gear last summer, everyone who did have a number kept that number.

Players who join during a season might get changed (like Lavery losing 9 and Clarke getting it last summer).

That suggests that unless anyone leaves most of the 1-11 will be unchanged.

8 might change as Thomas is available (although he should never have been given it in the first place), the other listed players are in the 20s or have no number anyway.

11, 12, 16, 17 are vacant. Wright, Coutts, Freeman, Stearman, Duffy, Lafferty and Ched will stay where they are.

Leonard, L.Evans and Holmes might be given new numbers as they joined after the numbers were allocated, Lundstram joined after pre-season started, so it's possible he might get a different number too

Brooks will be the interesting one, he kept 36 last summer, so might stay there.

Of course this might all be a pointless waste of time and Wilder will just make stuff up in a few weeks time, or he might bugger off somewhere else and somebody else will come in and renumber everyone.

Stearman?

In the teens. As a starter he'd ideally be in the first XI, probably 4, but I like that for the deep midfielder, ie Evans. Fleck and Brooks at 7 and 11 isn't ideal either but in a team without wingers, it's about the best you can get

I don't know why. It takes very little thought or effort, and you should have a better system than basically handing numbers out at random.

Brooks keeping 36 would be the most ridiculous, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Thomas shouldn’t be 8 anyway as he’s a winger and wasn’t likely to feature much, so that was an odd one

Part of the package to convince him to choose us over hometown club Boro at a guess. Not that it worked out particularly well for either party.

The old numbering systems are a thing of the past, only the number 1 denotes their place on the pitch now, gone are the days 2 was right back, 3 left back etc, give the players the numbers they want, and stick to it, even a small thing like favourite number can make a psychological difference in a players confidence or lack thereof.
As long as while they are at the club they stay with one number so the fans aren't chopping n changing numbers and names on their shirts I don't give a monkeys if centre back has number 99 on his back.
Side note I hear brooks is having number 4 on his back with his personal sponsor "Sale" underneath :)

Looks like Henderson is No.1 from training pics today. Moore back at 25

Well number 11 went well...
Yes so it did ! ...so a spare no 11 for whoever in an attacking midfield position is confident they will score some goals. No promised goals no can have it ! When TC played in our midfield he scored 16 goals in just one season. Now we are lucky if they score 2 each ! So this season I hope for massive improvements in goal scoring ....or at least trying to do this ....from our midfielders.

Hopefully something we work on in preseason, the confidence to shoot from distance. Duff and LEvans definitely have goals in them from midfield, Couttsy and Fleck can hit them too. Hardly anyone shot from distance last season until the last handful of games, like that Leon goal against Bristol on the final day, where'd he been keeping that one? It was like a weight lifted and he just said fuck it and hit that screamer.

I'd go like this.

  1. Henderson
  2. Baldock
  3. Stevens
  4. Fleck
  5. Oconnell
  6. Stearman
  7. .
  8. .
  9. Clarke
  10. Sharp
  11. Holmes (or new signing)
  12. .
  13. .
  14. .
  15. Coutts
  16. .
  17. .
  18. Freeman
  19. .
  20. .
  21. Duffy
Everyone else can fill in. 7, 8 and maybe 11 should be left for new signings.

I'm usually one to let folk keep their numbers and new signings should only be allowed vacant numbers, however, Stears is more suited to 6.
Lunny and Thomas should vacate 7 and 8.

Freeman is attached to 18 after his goalscoring season (True story). Coutts will keep 15 unless superstitious about his injury.

7, 8, 11, 12 and 16 or 17 should be the main numbers for the new signings to take. So it's who takes them that interests me.

I think pretty much everyone will retain their number apart from Thomas. Looks like Moore's back on 25 too. Lundstram shouldn't keep 7, he should take 16 or 17.

Can we give everyone a squad number starting & ending with 1? If we have red numbers they'll look like stripes

I think Lundstram should keep 7 unless he doesn't want it. L.Evans with the 8 off Thomas?

Whatever everyone is wearing on the first day of training is what their number will be based on the other Wilder seasons, so need need for fantasy lists.

TC has never scored more than 12 leagueq goals in one season

(League goals only)

1968-69 - 4
1969-70 - 12
1970-71 (when he started to play in midfield) - 9
1971-72 -10
1972-73 - 1
1973-74 - 6
1974-75 - 7
1975-76 - 1

So. Question regarding squad numbers.

As Clarke is only on loan to Wigan, does this mean that #9 is unavailable for the remainder of the season?

Expect Hogan to take Woodburns #11 If so.

I think Hogan can take the 9.
