just like the likes of Michael Owen and Jamie Ward, the type of player Done is you are going to get niggles...

do you think he should have played a player that was half fit? and risk him being out for longer? he also used his old Derby buddy Steve Davies sparingly too (given his foot injury) and other fellow Ex Derby buddy Ben Davies even more sparingly most of which was injury related.... but lets not let facts detract from a dig...

Steve Davies played in every game after he was signed, and started the vast majority of them. That's not being used sparingly.

the problem was that he wasnt a "starter" in the same vein that Peschi was.... look at his goals to games ratio for games he started.... and then look at the goals to games ratio for games he came off the bench.... yet Clough was criticised for playing him from the start.... (despite it clearly not being a strong point of McNulty's at the moment, but he is a young lad still learning his trade.... when criticised he was usually done so contructively not just "and he was shit" it was I thought he could have run the channels more, or he needs to learn to not to drift off side etc.... (which all fans were also berating him for)

I've looked at these ratios.

McNulty started 9 league games. He scored 5 times. That's an excellent goals to game ratio. It's better than his rate as a sub (4 in 22 appearances, one of which was a penalty)
He also scored twice in 6 league cup starts, and once in 2 FA Cup starts (and he scored once in 2 cup appearances as sub).

So that's 8 goals in 16 starts.

How is this worse than his record of 5 goals in 24 sub appearances?

That's why I would have liked Clough to have played him from the start. He actually scores when he starts.

You could equally argue that Clough knew when it was effective to play him. ;)

He might've carried on with his 1 in 2 ratio, alternatively that 8 in 16 might've been 10 or 12 in 30-odd. Who knows.

There's definitely a goalscorer (and possibly a very good player) in there somewhere, and he could be a real favourite somewhere, but my understanding is that pure goalscorers are rarely used in "the modern era" and atm McNulty doesn't have enough to his all round game. That said, his pass did lead to the first goal at Swindon.

It'll be interesting to see how things develop with the new manager.
