If that was us he'd have been bought for £15m then later down the line sold for £5m +add ons which will never get activated

Really, really wish people would stop using Didzy as the "see, injury prone players can come good" yard stick. Especially as a Souttar comparison.

McGoldrick was already an established Championship pro with hundreds of appearances under his belt. Despite famously having a lot of niggly injuries, he was still managing 25-30 games a season prior to signing.

Not enough games, sure, but not absolutely terrible. Your screenshot shows he'd played 145 games in the 5 seasons prior to signing for us.

Souttar? 65 games in the prior 5 seasons. They are not the same.

Souttar is 27, been at 6 clubs, 10+ season career... he's only managed 25 games twice!

One of these two players was a free, the other £10m. It's a ridiculous comparison.

I loved Souttar and want him back, but the price we're paying is simply outrageous.

Souttar was always going to be a gamble. Now it just appears that it'll be an even bigger gamble

It isn't paying 10m instead of 6m that bothers me most though

It's this repeated transfer market approach of obsessively focusing on one player

Just as no player is irreplaceable, no player is ever the only option for you to sign. We're acting like there's no other CB in the world, and haven't hidden our desperation. And as a result we've positioned ourselves perfectly to be shafted

Such a spend on this sort of player is also hard to justify if we don't have a chance of promotion, which currently we don't

Literally all clubs bar those in prem, and even then it’s not all of them, get anything back from majority of players they buy

For every one or odd two you sell to a prem team for profit more than often most don’t

The reason we didn’t sell Hamer or McBurnie or moose for big money is there was never any market for them to get that money so we decided to obviously act as we did

So why do our owners try to kid us that player-trading is their business model ?
Why do we buy duds like Gbric & Cannon who anyone could see are duds with a bit of observational scouting ?
Why trust some idiot with an AI programme to bring in a slew of kids who we never play ?
And then veer back to oldies like Philips , Rothwell & Jairo who can only do 60 mins.
We go from pillar to post and back again in such an unfocussed way , it speaks of a lack of cohesion between the absent clueless owners and the Bettis/Wilder executives at the Lane.
And along the way , eye-watering sums of £ have been wasted.
After chewing our way through half a billion in the last 6 years , you'd think that someone , somewhere would have learned their lesson.
But no , we're going after older players with known records of injury , trying the high-risk attempts at quick-fix.
Then again , I suppose the owners were never here for the long-term.

Didzy had many niggly injuries and was advised to drop the long commute. Gets new job with much shorter commute and availability increases. Shock!

Souttar has had at least two major injuries which required 3 lots of surgery. One on the ACL and two on the Achilles. He’s an awkward build and size for a professional footballer which will put extra strain on his body.

The most games he’s ever played in a season was 38 going back to 2020-2021… the third most he’s ever played in a season was for us, a season which ended on Boxing Day.

A fully fit and available Souttar is a beast, comfortably worth the £15mm Leicester paid for him. All this IF he stays fit is a massive IF because the odds are stacked against it. He hasn’t ever played a full season.

United are clearly very budget constrained this season and it looks like we’re putting all our eggs in one big beautiful Australian basket. People are right to be concerned about the risk. Just the same as they are with Kalvin Philips. It’s not ‘anti wilder’ as some have said, it’s just common sense. What is it, 6 competitive matches since Boxing Day 24. He’s the best CB we could hope for, but I’m nervous about it. With the Asia cup and anything he picks up along the way you’ve got to think we’re without our potential new club captain for 10+ games.

I don’t know if they do with your first point
I believe Grbic had played international football and that he was looked at by one of our former keepers who said buy him, Cannon has been gambled on by bigger clubs than us and you don’t reach that level generally by being a dud
Sometimes players just don’t work out at certain clubs in certain systems, it’s a gamble
We have won fuck all for over a hundred years and not got close bar a few cup semi finals, our various models or attempts haven’t worked so why not try AI


Can’t answer the why so we buy oldies and that doesn’t work but I can tell you I wouldn’t trust them or the prince or Kev to have produced what say Brentford have in past

And that’s even with recognising that we have had a very decent system of producing young lads, we just don’t have that regular production line selling to top teams all time

Eye watering sums for our fans yes, eye watering in terms of what other championship teams and prem teams then no

Half a billion addresses many other things doesn’t it, not just transfers

Hard agree. Me using Didz was in response to the metric of 30 games a season. Didz was just the first name I thought of that happened to fit the metric.

No denying that Souttar has an availability question mark. It's why we're in the conversation.

I guarantee that the club is looking, just as intently, at other players. They just let the news out that they want. No journalist is catching a scoop and rushing to the morning press. Buying clubs, selling clubs, players, agents, all have media teams and preferred contracts that they feed info to to control the narrative, manipulate the market, garner support etc. We're hearing mere snippets of the actual conversation, but trying to understand the whole story.

With regard to Grbic (i know its going a little off topic) I would be interested to know how our former keeper looked at him. He was No 2 Athetico so presumably was on the bench for 99% of La Liga games so when / how did he look at him in a meaningful game
