Sheffield United will start consultations next week with local residents and supporters over proposals to further improve the Bramall Lane stadium.

The Blades wish to submit development proposals for the South Stand as part of their long-term strategy focusing on improving facilities for fans and gearing up to be part of Sheffield's bid to be a potential 2018 World Cup venue.

Special exhibitions, when there will be opportunities to view the plans and see computer generated images of the future look of the stadium, will be held next Monday 22nd June and Wednesday 24th June.

The proposals come in the wake of United's plans to re-develop the Kop currently being reviewed by the council.

The South Stand redevelopment would see:
An additional tier of seating increasing the capacity by more than 6,000
A purpose built exhibition and conference centre within the stand
New facilities for supporters including additional corporate facilities
Affordable private housing
Additional commercial and banqueting facilities

The exciting plans - the second stage of a two stage ground development will take capacity to approximately 44,000.

They will further enhance the nearby up-and-coming Sharrow and Lower Sheaf Valley areas, creating more employment opportunities for local people in an area where United are an integral part of the community.

The first phase development plans - taking ground capacity up to 37,000 - includes removing the columns on the Kop, a new concourse providing modern kiosks and toilet facilities, new executive boxes, community and educational facilities, as well as improved facilities for disabled supporters which will be built in the Corner Stand. Also included is a second business enterprise centre between The Kop and South Stand.

United chief executive, Jason Rockett, said: "We are keen to receive the views of the local community and our fans. The second stage plans are exciting not only for United but for the city and the areas near to the stadium.

"The second phase is part of a long term strategy, subject to achieving success on the pitch, aimed at generating additional income off-the-field which we have already seen with the development of the hotel and the business centre.

"We believe our plans for the stadium will meet the criteria of a Sheffield bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup which as a club we are committed to supporting," added Mr Rockett.

The public consultations will be held on Monday 22nd and Wednesday 24th June from 5.30pm to 7.30pm in the Marston's Suite in the John Street Stand at the stadium.

In addition, an exhibition of the plans will be held in the John Street stand from next Monday 22nd to Friday 26th June from 9am to 5pm.

How about no, we don't need a 44,000 stadium that we can't fill? Let's spend a bit more money on the team to enable us to attract 44,000 first...

Exactly.

We will end up with a ground like Wednesday's.

Big and empty.

To me, this says houses instead of flats... erm... where?

Houses or flats I want one!, just off to check my lottery numbers!
When we do eventually get back to the promissed land we'll only get 44,000 against man . ushited and thats if we let all their fans in.

Fair point that in the short term we may not fill the ground but as a long term plan it is good that the club/board want to improve the ground for all possibilities.
The expansion for if/when we become a regular Prem team.
The housing/flats to cover income if it doesn't happen as quickly as they may have liked.
If we do go up, extra income on both parts, bonus!

Nowt wrong wi it ........... The planning process is a lengthy one and when approved has a minimum 5 year shelf life. If only McBlades AMBITION and forward planning was as good as McBuilders !
Ii

Is anyone heading down to the event tonight?

be interesting to see what they have planned even though its likely to be along time away

I think that looks impressive, think long term its a good option as long as we get up, I think a lot of it is to get a bigger better ground than the pigs for international matches, big semi finals etc, remember KMc is a blade and if it pisses wendys off he likes it!

I dont mind so long as I dont have to be 'relocated' I like my seat.

Yes... I can see it being an excuse to give our seats over to the corporate bods like they tried to before.

im not to sure about a 44k stadium but it can only make the club a 'bigger' club and it looks amazing so if they are Gonna do it ill welcome it :)

looks like we are trying to raise the clubs profile through the wrong channels IMO.
Best way to raise our profile is to get us in the best league in the world and stay there, not spend cash on upgrading to 44k just for 1 world cup's worth of media if we cant fill it the rest of the time.

looks outstanding just hope we`re settled in the premiership when this work is finished UTB.....

I agree with madeinsheffield, owt that takes a feather out of the Wendy's cap can't be a bad thing.
Also i think it'll look lovely hosting Ghana vs Switzerland or summat like that in 2018 :D

looks pretty amazing to me.it might even make me relocate to the south stand upper tier what a view that will be

One World Cup that a) England aren't guaranteed and b) it's not definite that Bramall Lane would host any matches in anyway. I agree the Kop needs doing, but 44k is perhaps a little optimistic for a club of our standing.

At the end of the day we all know the pro's and cons about upgrading the south stand but it don't half look good from the picture in the sheffield star.
Myself, yes filling 44,000 apart from manushited is very optimistic, but it would certainly entice and impress players being touted by the club.

I know the way this is going to be taken by some of you, but it's information that is apparently true so there you go.

Apparently we have already spent a not inconsiderable sum of money in trying to secure the World Cup bid, so the club are a pretty long way down the track into doing this kind of stuff.

It isn't a matter of if the Blades are going to spend more money on doing this, it's when.

Whether right, wrong or at the detriment of other things... is for you to decide.

Personally, I'd rather see this money being used to make ourselves an established Premiership team.

That means alot more to me than seeing a World Cup match being played at the Lane.

Affordable private housing....

Imagine your address being:

".. Cherry Street
Sheffield
S2 4SU"

AMAZING :D

I can see both sides of this here to be honest.

My gut feeling is that we should be looking at strengthening and consolidating the team, and part of that stems from the days of yore when we easily had the best stadium in Division Four. The same thing (but to a much lesser extent) happened with the Union side I've supported (Harlequins) since schooldays, when we were relegated from the Zurich in 2005, after redeveloping the Stoop at the expense of the squad.

The other side of this is that we all know that plans have been ongoing for a couple of years to redevelop the Kop, so I suppose financially it would make more sense (especially as we're financially stable AND there is the Tevez compensation coming in) to have one major contract for work awarded, than two separate bits.

The potential income, let alone kudos, from being a World Cup venue could be massive. Yes, it's a big gamble, but I'd like to think that this, as opposed to what happened at Quins, would be being done in tandem with keeping the squad up to scratch.
