Old gives way to New...

That Wednesday player etc,was a fundamental reason we enjoyed our best era since John Harris, and his sad,sad loss a major reason we started on the decline heralding what could yet eclipse the one that took us to Division 4.

Maybe. Maybe not.

But you don't build a statue to him.

Don`t know if you attended his funeral mate. I did. It was an amazing experience. Blades everywhere, barely a pig to be seen. No pig tributes, all Blades and hearing Bassett and Warnock speak at length and with great humour, warmth, love and emotion about the man and what he did for the club. His shear presence, the glue that created a now lost bond between boardroom and dressing room. They could build a statue on all 4 corners and rename a stand as far as I`m concerned.
He is hugely missed to this day.

Barely a pig aside from his entire family.

Are you suggesting his family shouldn`t have attended his funeral?
Who cares who Derek supported. The facts are he worked tirelessly and determindly to the betterment of SUFC in every post he held.

You might as well castigate all the ex pig players we`ve ever fielded,or denigrate Bassett and John Harris, neither of them were Blades fans.

Apart from Billy and maybe Long who amongst our current first team is a Blade?

Don`t understand your attitude to one of the clubs best servants.

I think the name Brutalist is a bit of a contradiction really. The concept probably got "brutalised" over time.

Its a linguistic accident, béton brut, is french for in-situ concrete - béton = concrete, brut = raw or 'as it comes' like dry champagne.

Corbusier the most influential architect of the 20th Century and regarded by most of them as (at least) a demi-God popularised its use and wrote about it, therefore.....

English architects and critics, non too au fait with the niceties of technical french, though brut must mean brutal and thus was born a 'movement'.

If you really want to see built brutalism go to the old Soviet Union, they did it HARDEST.

Loads o' Wednesday at Dooley's funeral.

It didn't really matter though that day.
It was a funeral. To a fellow man.
Celebrating the life of a man, not a Wednesday man or a United man...

There was also a contingent from Manchester United too.

But let's not get into point scoring about a man who worked for both clubs.

I'll say it again. I do not understand why we built a statue to him.

He never kicked a ball for us. He played for and managed them.

There are 2 statues. One is to out record appearance maker. The other is to him.

He is not qualified for the honour. I don't care how good a chief executive he was.

All this talk of brutalist architecture brings back memories (for me) of the awful carbuncle that is Dunelm House (University of Durham Student Union building). In a medieval city of stunning beauty sits this monstrosity; whichever way you looked at it. It is as fucking ugly inside as it is outside.

It's disgusting that so many old, beautiful buildings have been razed to the ground, while scars on the landscape such as this and Park Hill flats still stand.

Was his chief exec era a golden era for United or have I missed something as well?

I'm pretty sure without Dooley the Bassett years would have occurred.

When was Dooley employed ? I know he retired after we won promotion in 06.

Never in a million years deserves a statue.

There was a curse placed upon SUFC when we evicted Yorkshire CCC and given our track record since who could refute it.
We should have an exorcism performed plus someone off Redmires or wherever to do a lucky heather clothes peg ritual.
That`ll sort Longs inadequacies out quick sticks.

Forget that, just knock down the South Stand, rebuild the old Pavilion, brick for brick, call it the 'Joe Root Pavilion' and get cricket back at the Lane.

I'd say it was ever since we demolished the old John street that we've really gone down hill!! Only one season in the top flight since then. If anyone has any old remnants from the John street please smuggle it back into the ground, we've got to try anything at this point!

That turnstyle in the Cricks is from the John Street stand isn`t it?
Next home game that`s coming out under my jacket!!!
