I was saying to someone I was desperate to get our Jack a ticket for Stoke as he'd seen three play off finals but never been at a promotion party. Then I realised I'd made the outrageous assumption that we were going up automatically. Football gods I am really, really sorry. I just got excited for a minute. I hang my head in shame and won't presume again. Please don't hold it against me.

You now have to reserve an unrefundable expensive hotel room in Sheffield for the nights before and after the playoff home semi as penance.

I’ve never been at a game in which we’ve won promotion and I’m past 40.

Come on The Footballing Gods just once.....

You’re done for on this site if they punish us for your temerity you do know that don’t you?

Dear Footballing Gods,

Can I tell you a little story. Having been devastated by attending three previous play off final losses, I declined to attend in 2012 as it was obviously all my fault and you were punishing me. I went and hid away from all possible coverage. This led me to drive my wife to Meadowhell whilst listening to Radio 4. I sat in the car only getting out to assist her loading the boot and as I did so three scrawny teenage pigs passed by in obviously jubilant mood uttering loud snorts of derision to anyone in earshot about another United failure. This hurt me deeply and I still bear the scars.

Would you mind awfully if you got the team to win all the remaining games so I possibly do not have to suffer the same fate? I would be most grateful and would construct and dedicate a shrine or similar monument to you in a place of your choosing. I promise that if you assisted I would not ever seek out and abuse any scrawny teenage pigs by dancing around maniacally at Hillsboro' corner shouting "not so massive now yer filthy tramps". Honest.

I'm past 50, and the only one I can recall didn't even involve the Blades. It was Burnley v Hull.
Which game sealed our 4th division promotion?

I know Darlington was the party but someone older than I am will be able to say if it was the clincher.

I was too young for Leicester and never stood a chance of Northampton or Cardiff away games tickets.

A home promotion on the back of a victory is a dream.

You seem to have spelt Ipswich wrong.

Dear Football Gods,

Please ensure Dean Henderson has a decent hat for today. I appreciate you wanted to meddle at home to Bristol City, but please no more.

I don’t ask for much, so if you could deliver that I back the lads to do the job without any divine intervention.

I think that season the clincher came when we weren't playing. Peterborough played a midweek evening game (we weren't playing that night) and lost which meant they couldn't catch us, so we were up.

Peterborough's form at the end of that season resembled Middlesbrough's current form. Terrible.

Dear Footballing Gods,

I know it's too late. Too many have already irked you with their presumptions and complacency, not to mention the stains on the curtains from their premature ejaculate.

Can I please beg of you, however, to try and make it as painless as it can be under the circumstances this time.

Thanks.

Well the gods certainly read this post didn’t they...

Footballing gods don't exist. Football is down to bottle, decisions and good tactics.
